1. حَسَدَ الوَلِيُّ الجاهِلُ

    وهو الخَمولُ الغافِلُ

    The ignorant man envied the saint,

    And he is the obscure, heedless one.

  2. الحقُّ بادٍ لم يزلْ

    لا يعتَريهِ الباطِلُ

    Truth has never ceased to be manifest;

    Falsehood does not assail it.

  3. والصِّدقُ يظهَرُ حُكْمُهُ

    إنْ ما رَواهُ القائِلُ

    And truthfulness—its judgment becomes manifest,

    If the speaker should recount it.

  4. والسِّرُّ يبدو نورُهُ

    معنًى يَراهُ العاقِلُ

    And the secret's light appears,

    A meaning perceived by the wise one.

  5. الحقُّ يُعْرَفُ أهلُهُ

    والكاذِبونَ خَوامِلُ

    The people of truth are known,

    And the liars are obscure.

  6. راموا التَّسَلُّقَ للعُلى

    والعَكْسُ فيهِمْ حاصِلُ

    They sought to climb to the heights,

    And in them the opposite comes to pass.

  7. شَغَلوا القُلُوبَ لبُغْيَةٍ

    هي تلكَ ظِلٌّ زائِلُ

    They occupied hearts in pursuit of an aim;

    That very thing is a vanishing shadow.

  8. وتَوَهَّموا أَفعالَهُمْ

    واللهُ رَبِّي الفاعِلُ

    And they fancied their deeds their own,

    Yet God, my Lord, is the doer.

  9. ظَنُّوا المَعارِفَ عن هَوًى

    والعارِفونَ قَلائِلُ

    They conjectured about knowledge out of desire,

    And those who know are few.

  10. للقلبِ حالٌ بَيِّنٌ

    عن كلِّ شيءٍ شاغِلُ

    The heart has a manifest state,

    Engrossing it to the exclusion of everything else.

  11. هو عن جَنابِ المُصْطَفى

    بالطَّوْرِ سِرًّا ناقِلُ

    It, from the presence of the Chosen One,

    Conveys a secret in that state.

  12. ما للفُؤادِ إذا انْجَلى

    عن سِرِّ رَبِّي حائِلُ

    For the heart, once unveiled, there is no

    Barrier to my Lord's secret.

  13. النَّاسُ أطْوارٌ وَهُمْ

    بينَ الشُّعوبِ قَبائِلُ

    People are of differing kinds, and they

    Are tribes among the peoples.

  14. وهُمْ بُنيَّ مَعادِنٌ

    فنَواقِصٌ وكَوامِلُ

    And they, my little son, are mines:

    Thus some are incomplete, and others complete.

  15. والفتحُ سَحَّ سَحابُهُ

    والسَّيْلُ منهُ سائِلُ

    And the cloud of spiritual opening poured down,

    And the torrent flows from it.

  16. الوَعْدُ وعدٌ صادِقٌ

    والنَّصُّ نَصٌّ شامِلُ

    The promise is a truthful promise,

    And the text is an all-encompassing text.

  17. والنُّورُ نورٌ بارِزٌ

    والفَيْضُ فيضٌ حاصِلُ

    And the light is a light shining forth,

    And the outpouring is an actual outpouring.

  18. موسَى مع الخِضْرِ انْطَوَتْ

    منه لديهِ مَشاكِلُ

    Moses, with al-Khidr—folded away were

    Perplexities arising from him, in his presence.

  19. فرَقائقٌ وحَقائقٌ

    وعَوائقٌ وعَواضِلُ

    Thus, subtleties and realities,

    And obstacles and intractable problems.

  20. والسَّيرُ ميَّزَ ليلَها

    ولقد أُجيبَ السَّائِلُ

    And the journey made their night discernible,

    And indeed the questioner was answered.

  21. فاصْبِرْ ففي سُجُفِ الخَفا

    ضمنَ البُروجِ مَنازِلُ

    So be patient, for in the veils of concealment,

    Within the constellations are stations.

  22. هذي الشُّموسُ تلأْلأَتْ

    هذي البُدورُ كَوامِلُ

    These suns have sparkled;

    These full moons are complete.

  23. رَبِّي يُدافِعُ عنكَ لا

    تضجَرْ أَيا ذا العاقِلُ

    My Lord defends you; do not

    Grow impatient, O you wise one.
