قُلوبُhearts الأولياءِthe saints لهاthey have سُيوفٌswords
قُلوبُ الأولياءِ لها سُيوفٌ
وتَفْعَلُand they act فوقَbeyond أفْعالِthe deeds of السُّيوفِthe swords
وتَفْعَلُ فوقَ أفْعالِ السُّيوفِ
The hearts of the saints have swords,
The hearts of the saints have swords
And accomplish more than swords can do.
That do more than the deeds of swords
تُصَيِّرُthey turn مأمَنَthe refuge of الأعداءِthe enemies خَوْفاًinto fear
تُصَيِّرُ مأمَنَ الأعداءِ خَوْفاً
وتُجريand they make flow الأمنَsafety فيin اليومِthe day المَخوفِthe dreaded
وتُجري الأمنَ في اليومِ المَخوفِ
They turn the enemies' haven into fear,
They turn the refuge of enemies into fear
And make safety flow on the dreaded day.
And bring safety on the fearful day
وتَخْتَرِقُand they pierce الصُّفوفَthe ranks بغيرِwithout خَيلٍhorses
وتَخْتَرِقُ الصُّفوفَ بغيرِ خَيلٍ
وتَجْمَعُand they gather فيin الوَغىbattle شَعَثَthe scattered parts of الصُّفوفِthe ranks
وتَجْمَعُ في الوَغى شَعَثَ الصُّفوفِ
And pierce the ranks without horses,
They penetrate the ranks without horses
And gather the scattered ranks amid battle.
And gather the dispersed ranks in battle
يَمُرُّpasses الواحِدُthe single one الطَّيَّارُthe soaring one منهاamong them
يَمُرُّ الواحِدُ الطَّيَّارُ منها
فَيَفْتُكُthen deals death حينَwhen يَهْجِمُattacks بالأُلوفِto thousands
فَيَفْتُكُ حينَ يَهْجِمُ بالأُلوفِ
A single soaring one among them passes,
The lone, flying one passes among them
And, when attacking, deals death to thousands.
So he wreaks havoc when he charges by the thousands
عَصائِبُناour bands بِهمْthrough them أهلُpeople of المَعاليnoble attainments
عَصائِبُنا بِهمْ أهلُ المَعالي
جَحاجِحَةُgreat chiefs الحِمىthe sanctuary سودُblack الشُّفوفِthe fine garments
جَحاجِحَةُ الحِمى سودُ الشُّفوفِ
Our bands, through them, are people of noble attainments,
Our bands, they are the people of glory
Great chiefs of the sanctuary, in fine black garments,
The zealous protectors, the black knights
شُموسٌsuns بالمَعارِفِwith spiritual knowledge زاهِراتٌradiant
شُموسٌ بالمَعارِفِ زاهِراتٌ
حُفِظْنَthey have been preserved مَدىthroughout الزَّمانِtime منَfrom الكُسوُفِeclipse
حُفِظْنَ مَدى الزَّمانِ منَ الكُسوُفِ
Suns radiant with spiritual knowledge,
Suns shining with knowledge
Preserved from eclipse throughout time.
That were protected from eclipse throughout time
عِصابةُthe company of حَضرةِthe august presence of الغَوْثِthe spiritual succor الرِّفاعيal-Rifa‘i
عِصابةُ حَضرةِ الغَوْثِ الرِّفاعي
أبيAbu (father of) العبَّاسِal-‘Abbas ذيpossessing القلبِthe heart الرَّؤوفِcompassionate
أبي العبَّاسِ ذي القلبِ الرَّؤوفِ
The company in the august presence of the Ghawth al-Rifa‘i,
The band of the presence of the Sublime Aid
Abu al-‘Abbas, whose heart is compassionate,
Of Abul Abbās, the kind-hearted one
مَتينِsteadfast الجأشِof heart قافِMount Qaf ذويthose possessing التَّجَلِّيdivine manifestation
مَتينِ الجأشِ قافِ ذوي التَّجَلِّي
كَريمِnoble الخُلْقِin character ذيpossessing الطَّبْعِthe disposition الألوفِcompanionable
كَريمِ الخُلْقِ ذي الطَّبْعِ الألوفِ
Steadfast of heart, the Mount Qaf of those granted divine manifestation,
The steadfast, firm ones with enlightenment
Noble in character, with a companionable nature.
The generous, cordial folk
رَصينٌcomposed ذوpossessing مُحاضَرَةٍspiritual presence مَكينٌfirmly established
رَصينٌ ذو مُحاضَرَةٍ مَكينٌ
وسَمْكُand the vault of الدَّهْرِtime يُمطِرُrains down بالحُتوفِwith deaths
وسَمْكُ الدَّهْرِ يُمطِرُ بالحُتوفِ
Composed, endowed with spiritual presence, firmly established,
A poised one with enduring companionship
While the vault of time rains down death.
And the sky rains down gifts upon him
سَخِيٌّgenerous هاشميُّHashimite الطَّوْرِmanner ماجَتْsurged
سَخِيٌّ هاشميُّ الطَّوْرِ ماجَتْ
علىover ساحاتِهِhis courtyards سُحْبُclouds of الضُّيوفِguests
على ساحاتِهِ سُحْبُ الضُّيوفِ
Generous, Hashimite in manner; there surged
A generous Hāshimī in manner
Over his courtyards clouds of guests.
Upon his plains the clouds of guests gathered
يَقومُhe stands علىupon المَحَجَّةِthe clear path أحْمَدِيًّاin Ahmad's way
يَقومُ على المَحَجَّةِ أحْمَدِيًّا
إذاwhen عَجِزَare incapable الرِّجالُthe men عنof الوُقوفِstanding
إذا عَجِزَ الرِّجالُ عن الوُقوفِ
He stands upon the clear path in Ahmad's way,
He stands for the truth, Ahmadi in creed
When men are unable to stand.
When men fall short of standing
ويَقْطَعُand he severs حَبلَthe cord of جاحِدِهِthe one who denies him بِسِرٍّthrough a secret
ويَقْطَعُ حَبلَ جاحِدِهِ بِسِرٍّ
إلهِيٍّdivine كماjust as بالعَهْدِwith the covenant يوفيhe keeps faith
إلهِيٍّ كما بالعَهْدِ يوفي
And severs the cord of whoever denies him through a secret
And he severs the rope of his denier with a divine secret
Divine, just as he keeps faith with the covenant.
As he fulfills his promise
نَسَجْتُI wove لهُfor him منfrom المَنْظومِverse ثوباًa robe
نَسَجْتُ لهُ من المَنْظومِ ثوباً
نَظَمْتُI strung بِسِلْكهِon its thread دُرَرَthe pearls of الحُروفِthe letters
نَظَمْتُ بِسِلْكهِ دُرَرَ الحُروفِ
I wove for him a robe of verse;
I wove for him from poetry a garment
I strung the pearls of letters on its thread.
I strung with its thread the pearls of phrases
وجِئْتُand I came بِلَهْفَتيwith my yearning وعَناءِand the anguish of قلبيmy heart
وجِئْتُ بِلَهْفَتي وعَناءِ قلبي
حِمىthe sanctuary of الفَحْلِthe stallion (mighty master) الحُسَيْنِيِّthe Husayni العَطوفِthe compassionate
حِمى الفَحْلِ الحُسَيْنِيِّ العَطوفِ
And I came with my yearning and my heart's anguish
And I came with my fervor and the toil of my heart
To the sanctuary of the compassionate Husayni stallion.
For the zeal of the noble, affectionate Husseini
وقُلْتٌand I said لِهِمَّتيto my aspiration البُشْرىglad tidings أنيخيkneel down
وقُلْتٌ لِهِمَّتي البُشْرى أنيخي
ببابِat the gate of أبيAbu (father of) العَواجِزِthe helpless ثمَّthen طوفيcircle round
ببابِ أبي العَواجِزِ ثمَّ طوفي
And I said to my aspiration, “Glad tidings! Kneel
And I told my resolve the good news—go to him
At the gate of Abu al-‘Awajiz, then circle round;
To the door of the Remover of Difficulties, then circumambulate
وقوميand rise واقْعُديand sit طَرَباًin rapture وأمْناًand in safety
وقومي واقْعُدي طَرَباً وأمْناً
وإيَّاكِand you must beware العُكوفَstaying away عنfrom العُكوفِdevoted abiding
وإيَّاكِ العُكوفَ عن العُكوفِ
And rise and sit in rapture and safety,
And rise up—sit happily and safely
And beware of staying away from devoted abiding.
But beware of neglecting the circumambulation
ألاbehold فاسْتَحْقِريso deem insignificant الأخْطارَthe dangers إنَّاindeed we
ألا فاسْتَحْقِري الأخْطارَ إنَّا
لِجَلْجَلَةِfor the thunder of الفُتوحِspiritual openings علىon شُروفِheights
لِجَلْجَلَةِ الفُتوحِ على شُروفِ
Lo, then, deem the dangers small, for we
Indeed, we think little of dangers—we are
Are on heights for the thunder of spiritual openings.
For the glory of conquest on the precipices
فَذاfor this غَوثٌa spiritual succor بِهِمَّتِهِthrough his spiritual resolve جِهاراًopenly
فَذا غَوثٌ بِهِمَّتِهِ جِهاراً
مَشَيْناwe walked فوقَabove بارِقَةِthe flash of السُّيوفِthe swords
مَشَيْنا فوقَ بارِقَةِ السُّيوفِ
For this is a Ghawth; through his resolve, in plain sight,
For with his resolve openly the Sublime Aid
We walked above the flash of swords.”
We walked above the lightning of the swords
