The breeze stirred and journeyed with the secrets.

Be gentle with our hearts' secret, O night-traveler.

Give voice for us to our yearnings in love for them.

And preserve for us the ascent through the stages.

And safeguard the very wording of passionate love.

Faulty narration is the bane of reports.

And when you mention our ardor before the beloved,

Bring to the telling the delicate touches of remembrance.

Say: I espied a servant at al-Ghuwayr, afflicted by

The ravages of passion and the calamities of travel.

He was once a devoted neighbor of the beloved,

And today, the distance of wastelands and seas.

    Restless, sorrowful, love-crazed, distraught,

He sprinkled the lands with his copiously flowing tears.

Thinner than a phantom, and within his robe,

He hides from his reproachers in his nightly darkness.

Until, when day dawned, it turned away from him,

Its flank averted—and his day was no day.

The days have tightened the knot of his waistcloth,

Dead from ardor, within a waistcloth's knot.

No wind has journeyed from the domes of your ruined dwellings

Without departing with his ever-roving sigh.

And if they turn a glance toward you in compassion

For my love-madness, then tell them my secrets.

I swear by them—and they are the most precious oath,

And the most exalted of what I invoke amid dangers.

They are the soul of my soul, in its birth through the Command,

Along with my substance and the formation of fired clay.

Ah, pity for a sigh within my heart,

And for my eye's tears, pouring forth and flowing.

I have become a marvel among their lovers,

Between water and fire, which I have brought together.

And our pledges, our witnessing, and our visits

Are for their august presence and the honored one of that abode.

Whoever gains from them a vision in sleep

Gains acceptance and gains the ultimate abode.

My soul is ransom for the dust of the courtyard of their gate,

And my dust dwindles amid that dust.

Were it not for their assemblies and the splendor of their age,

The assemblies of all ages would have died.

They are the people of Yathrib, the sacred sites, and the banner.

They are the qibla of the absent and the present.

They are the light of existence's two roots, and love for them

Is provision for coming before the Great Creator.
