دمعٌ من العين جرى كالمطر

يذكر من أهل الغوير الخبر

يذكر من أهل الغوير الخبر

Tears flowed from the eye like rain,

Tears from the eyes flowed like rain

Recalling tidings from the people of al-Ghuwayr.

Recalling the news of the beloved's caravan

ومقلةٌ شاخصةٌ لهفةً

ومقلةٌ شاخصةٌ لهفةً

تبعثُ خلف القافلين النظر

تبعثُ خلف القافلين النظر

And an eye, staring in yearning,

And an eager, yearning eyelid

Sends its gaze after those returning home.

Sending its gaze behind the caravans

ومهجةٌ شَبَّت بنارٍ لها

ومهجةٌ شَبَّت بنارٍ لها

زفيرُ جمرٍ بالولوعِ استعر

زفيرُ جمرٍ بالولوعِ استعر

And a heart that blazed with a fire whose

And burning entrails kindled with fire

Embers’ breath flared up with passionate love.

With burning embers sighing in anguish

وأَنَّهُ تتبعها حنَّةٌ

وأَنَّهُ تتبعها حنَّةٌ

ترقُّ بالتأثير قلب الحجر

ترقُّ بالتأثير قلب الحجر

And a moan followed by a sigh of longing,

And that pining follows it

Whose effect softens a heart of stone.

Softening the heart of stone with its effect

لا حاجراً تبغي ولا المنحنى

لا حاجراً تبغي ولا المنحنى

ولا خميل الروض وقت السحر

ولا خميل الروض وقت السحر

It seeks neither Hajir nor the bend,

Seeking neither a confidant nor the bending willow

Nor the garden’s thicket in the hour before dawn.

Nor the valley's chamomile at dawn

يزفها الوجد لبدر الحمى

يزفها الوجد لبدر الحمى

فهل رأيتم مغرماً بالقمر

فهل رأيتم مغرماً بالقمر

Longing escorts it to the full moon of the sanctuary.

Passion carries her to the full moon

Have you, then, seen one enamored of the moon?

Have you seen one enamored with the moon?

إن غاب تبكي العين من فقده

إن غاب تبكي العين من فقده

وتشتكي البعد اذا ما حضر

وتشتكي البعد اذا ما حضر

If he is absent, the eye weeps at losing him,

If he is absent, the eyes weep for losing him

And laments the distance when he is present.

And complain of distance when he is present
