Take delight in us; we are fragrance

For the soul of every lover.

We reveal the radiance, and it shines forth

At noon in east and west.

And we are the descendants of a spiritual Pole

    Who rose above every Pole.

    Meanings made pilgrimage to him

And murmured like a pilgrim answering the call.

The sheikh of the helpless is my treasure,

The beacon of my heart's sanctuary.

In both states, he is my imam,

    Between bestowal and withdrawal.

I was annihilated in him through passion,

And ecstasy tore apart my reason.

    مهما أَردْتَ فقُلْ بِي

    O my reproacher, this is who I am;

Whatever you wish, say it of me.

    Ibn al-Rifa‘i is my sheikh

Among the saints, and my beloved.

And the Hashimite is my prophet,

And God—hallowed be He—is my Lord.

And the tradition of purity is my religion,

And the Companions' way is my path.

And love for the sons of Taha

Is my sword against every calamity.

    On the path of al-Rifa‘i,

I chanted my caravan onward for God's sake.

    إِلى البِطاحِ فسِرْ بِي

    O driver of the pale camels, urge them on;

To the broad plains, then journey with me.

    أُحِبُّ للدَّمعَ صبّي

    I am enamored of Ahmad;

I love my outpouring of tears.

Between ecstasy and a spiritual state,

And the fire of longing and divine attraction,

And the anguish of separation and union,

And the moaning of distance and nearness.

O my adviser, cease advising me,

And, by your honor, lessen your reproach of me.

    أَتعَبْتَ بالعَتْبِ قلبي

    You made me hear bitter counsel;

You wearied my heart with reproach.

Have you, then, lifted a veil

From the matter's inward truth, to make it known?

And have you seen the divine manifestation

From behind the drapery of veils?

And have you seen, in my tavern,

My drinking of the wine of love?

What have I to do with created beings?

    Dust of earth amid earth.

Nothing has remained dwelling with me

    Except love for my beloved.

And if I fall ill, he is my cure.

From the spray of my eye pours forth

In my anguish, a downpour like the clouds'.

And my moaning disturbs the caravan

In every ravine, ravine after ravine.

And between my eye and my sleep,

    Passionate love has waged war.

    The reproacher said: "Strange is

    The bewilderment of this lover!"

And he turned away from me in error,

And harmed my honor with lies.

And praise be to God: I have no

    Sin—rather, love is my sin.

    If that is a fault,

I am content with my fault for a lifetime.

    يا نسمَةَ القُرْبِ هُبِّي

    O fragrant breath of the beloved, visit me;

    O breeze of nearness, blow!
