Peace upon the ruins of Alwa, even though
Peace be upon the ruins of my beloved, though now
Our dwellings have carried us far from them, O Mayy.
Our dwellings are far apart, o Maysun!
ألاtake heed أنَّthat علوىAlwa حيثwherever كانwas مزارهاher place of visitation
لهاshe has فيin قلوبthe hearts of الوالهينthe love-stricken بهاwith her حيُّa dwelling-place
Know that Alwa, wherever her place of visitation was,
Surely wherever my beloved’s tomb may be
Has a home in the hearts of those enamored of her.
In the hearts of her lovers she is alive.
تموتdie جسومthe bodies of العاشقينthe lovers وإنَّماbut rather
صميُcore (reading uncertain) الهوىlove فيwithin طيِّthe folds of أسرارهمtheir secrets حيُّalive
The bodies of lovers die, but
The bodies of lovers may die but their love
Love's core lives within the folds of their secrets.
Remains secretly alive in the folds of their hearts.
