One of low resolve has low ambition,

and one of noble nature has lofty ambition.

This one pursues matters he desires,

while that one's concern is to cast creation aside.

Reflect on me—may I be your ransom, my companion—

and take from me the clear indications.

I folded events away behind my back,

following the pattern of the Haydari ways.

And I restrained my eyes and rose blind

to created worlds, with resolve and intention.

I was content with my patched cloak and my garment's wrap,

and raced the beloved ones on the expedition.

And I said to the self's passing impulses: Wait!

    Spare me your hidden intrigues.

Does the striver receive provision through striving?

Establish for me the conclusion in the proposition.

And bring us the syllogism, soundly set forth,

or else you are foolish in essence.

For how many a trickster, unsound in judgment and witless,

    enjoys a comfortable worldly life!

And how many a scholar, surging in a sea of knowledge,

has clouds of affliction arising from his poverty!

Thus, either dominion over the whole world,

    or, preferably, renunciation of it.

And this renunciation is possible at any moment,

while the rank of dominion is far away.

And renunciation is the finest of all states

for one with a purified, contented soul.

And when I debated with it, it was defeated and bewildered,

and through helplessness became pure and undefiled.

So I drew back its reins toward effacement,

with the force of my unyielding resolve.

And I paid it no heed until it vanished utterly,

    and died, helpless yet strong.

And the wellsprings of manifestation burst forth

in my heart, from pure conduits.

So I brought forth words, words of truth,

    from subtle, essential wisdom.

So if the world comes to you, my little son,

take her with the Hashimi right hand.

    سُمومُ القَلْبِ في هذا خَفِيَّهْ

    And do not let your heart be concerned with her in this matter;

the heart's poisons in this are hidden.

And if she departs, slap the back of her neck,

for her arrival and her return are vile.

And divorce her in your innermost being, however she goes,

with a soul rich in faith.

And take the Messenger's way as your way,

and follow in the footsteps of his pious band.

And make the path of spiritual knowledge your nature,

in accord with the Ahmadi dispositions.

For forsaking creation is the easiest of all things

for a servant who seeks to meet his Prophet.

And do not turn your heart toward hopes,

and take from your shaykh al-Mahdi his garb.

For the Mahdawiyya, wherever they may be,

have a special distinction through the Hashimi's state.

Their oath is a firm covenant from him

    to renunciation—how excellent the oath!

States that have risen and soared in station—

    yes, those states are Muhammadi.

May a blessing surround the tomb of their possessor,

enfolding the purest peace together with salutation.
