    Not once did the caravan traverse the earth's expanse

    Toward the reaches of the broad valleys without our melting away.

    And we folded inward, and through ardent love were unfolded.

    And we grew distant in our yearning, and drew near.

    Thus are we, O Hudhaym—a people

    Who have lost awareness of all in existence save those we love.

    وذكَرْنا إِعراضَهُمْ فتعِبْنَا

    How often we recalled our loved ones and so found rest;

    And recalled their turning away, and so grew weary.

    ووَجَدْنا منها البُدورَ فطِبْنَا

    And we lost those faces, and so we died;

    And we found among them full moons, and so grew glad.

    And we devoted ourselves to them, and when we reached

    Their sanctuary, we drank the water of life.

    We are a people—praise be to God—who, in secret,

    Indeed, openly too, have repented of seeing anything else.
