ودمعُ عيني سائلٌ دافقُ

My heart, because of you, is fearful and throbbing;

My heart is afraid of you, throbbing.

And the tears of my eyes flow forth in torrents.

أموتُ إذ تحكى أحاديثكم

شوقاً لأَني عاشقٌ صادقُ

I die whenever tales of you are told,

From longing—for I am a sincere lover.

ومن نواحيكم ونوحي لكم

أحيا متى ما لألأَ البارقُ

I come alive whenever the lightning flashes.

يطرقُ قلبي خوف هجرانكم

يطرقُ قلبي خوف هجرانكم

وربَّ وقتٍ أزعج الطارقُ

وربَّ وقتٍ أزعج الطارقُ

My heart is visited by fear of your abandonment,

Fear of your forsaking me knocks at my heart,

And many a time the night-visitor has startled it.

And many a time the visitor has disturbed me.

كلي لمجلي برقكم ناظرٌ

كلي لمجلي برقكم ناظرٌ

ولمعاني ذكركم ناطقُ

ولمعاني ذكركم ناطقُ

All of me gazes toward the splendor of your lightning,

All my being gazes upon the manifestation of your lightning,

And speaks the meanings of your remembrance.

And gives voice to the meanings of your remembrance.

ولم تزل تشرقُ بي شمسكم

ولم تزل تشرقُ بي شمسكم

ما ذرَّ مني أبداً شارقُ

ما ذرَّ مني أبداً شارقُ

Your sun has never ceased to shine through me,

And your sun has never ceased to shine through me;

Whenever a radiant dawn breaks from within me.

No light has ever dawned from me.

فليس لي سيرٌ إلى غيركم

فليس لي سيرٌ إلى غيركم

آناً ولا لي عنكم عائقُ

آناً ولا لي عنكم عائقُ

I have no journey toward anyone but you;

So I have no journey toward anyone but you,

I neither turn aside, nor does any barrier keep me from you.

Even for a moment, nor anything to hold me back from you.

عن أنكر المخلوق وجدي بكم

عن أنكر المخلوق وجدي بكم

عن حسدٍ صدَّقهُ الخالقُ

عن حسدٍ صدَّقهُ الخالقُ

Though creation, out of envy, denies my passion for you,

[If] the creature denies my ecstasy in you

The Creator has affirmed it.

Out of envy, the Creator affirms it.

يا من لكم روحي ومن في خفا

يا من لكم روحي ومن في خفا

روحي إليكم مجهدٌ سائقُ

روحي إليكم مجهدٌ سائقُ

O you to whom my soul belongs—and what lies hidden

O you to whom my soul belongs, and who, in the hidden depths

Within my soul, exhausted, drives me toward you.

Of my soul, drive me hard toward you.

أنتم ضياءُ القلبِ في طيِّهِ

أنتم ضياءُ القلبِ في طيِّهِ

إذا دجا من سمكه الغاسقُ

إذا دجا من سمكه الغاسقُ

You are the radiance folded within the heart

You are the heart's light within its folds,

Whenever the darkening night spreads gloom from its vault.

When darkness deepens from its vault.

سابقُ عزمي في هواكم لقد

سابقُ عزمي في هواكم لقد

عزَّ فلا يلحقُهُ لاحقُ

عزَّ فلا يلحقُهُ لاحقُ

My resolve outstrips all in love of you; indeed,

My resolve, racing ahead in love for you, has indeed

It has grown too mighty for any pursuer to overtake.

Grown unassailable; no pursuer can overtake it.

برزتُ من طمس خفائي بكم

برزتُ من طمس خفائي بكم

ومسك طوري في الورى عابقُ

ومسك طوري في الورى عابقُ

Through you I emerged from the obliteration of my hiddenness,

Through you I emerged from the effacement of my concealment,

And the musk of my spiritual state perfumes the world.

And the musk of my state wafts among humankind.

وذقتُ ماء الوصلِ من حانكم

وذقتُ ماء الوصلِ من حانكم

والماءُ يدري بردخُ الذائقُ

والماءُ يدري بردخُ الذائقُ

I tasted the water of union in your tavern,

And I tasted the water of union from your tavern;

And the taster knows water by its coolness.

And the taster knows the water's [coolness?].

ذكرتكم ذكر ولوهٍ لكم

ذكرتكم ذكر ولوهٍ لكم

I remember you as one madly enamored of you,

I remembered you as one distraught with love for you,

Whose rapture outruns his clay.

Whose passion has outstripped his clay.

مهيَّمٍ في كلِّ جزءٍ له

مهيَّمٍ في كلِّ جزءٍ له

من جسمه سرٌّ لكم عاشقُ

من جسمه سرٌّ لكم عاشقُ

One enthralled in every part of his being—

Enraptured—in every part he has

In every part of his body, a secret loves you.

Of his body is a secret in love with you.

قد ذكرتكم باطلاً عُصبةٌ

قد ذكرتكم باطلاً عُصبةٌ

وإنما باطلهم زاهق

وإنما باطلهم زاهق

A faction has invoked you falsely,

A band has indeed invoked you falsely,

But their falsehood is doomed to vanish.

But their falsehood is passing away.

في حضرة الذكر وأحوالها

في حضرة الذكر وأحوالها

قد يعرفُ الكاذبُ والصادق

قد يعرفُ الكاذبُ والصادق

In the presence of remembrance and its spiritual states,

In the gathering of remembrance and its states,

The liar and the truthful are known.

The liar and the truthful one may be recognized.
