How many an obscured one have we unfolded and folded away!

And how many a prominent one have we set upright and bent!

And how many an obscure one have we raised up and brought low!

And how many a pledge-breaker have we drawn close and kept away!

And how many a sign have we poured forth and abrogated!

And how many a report with a chain of transmission have we transmitted and narrated!

And how much wine have we passed around and withheld!

And from how many a brimming cup have we drunk and given others drink!

And through our Lord we have given and taken away.

And by His command we have judged and decreed.

How many a heart has the Guardian illuminated through us!

And for us He has indeed gladdened the eye with gifts.

The people of haste journeyed with diligence and toil,

and we outstripped them at a leisurely pace.

We are the Prophet's household; so the secret from him

journeyed to us through the descent of the unseen mysteries.

No station of nearness has appeared to men,

or of proximity, without our having risen beyond it.

If time assails you one day with a calamity,

turn to us and cast your burdens upon us.

Whoever we brought low died in abasement.

And God has refused to unfold what we have already folded away.

And whoever gained a glance of aid from us

became, after obscurity, a person of distinction through honor.

Indeed, the hand of providence has unveiled us as an eye

that has lifted a veil from the people's inner sight.
