The knave marvels that we rise, though there were issued

For us decrees of exaltation before time began.

And rashly he sought to extinguish the light of our manifestation,

While its tower stands above where Aries' head appears.

And how can one who has set out seeking us catch up with us,

When our outpouring has already flowed unseen to every saint?

I donned its robe of honor in an assembly ennobled

By the Messenger, through the investiture of Imam Ali.

And I stood as sovereign of God's people, their master,

And the crown of their great ones in the crowded assembly.

    ولو نَظَرْتُ لِجَمرٍ سالَ بالبَلَلِ

    So if I gazed upon a rock, it would flow with water;

And if I gazed upon live coals, they would stream with moisture.

And if I gazed upon a pauper, he would ascend through ranks

And go strutting in bounty and fine robes.

And if I gazed upon a worshipped being, I would draw him near,

By my Lord's leave, to a seat of honor, lofty in station.

And if I glanced at a black slave, he would rise above

His masters and ascend to the pinnacle of hope.

And if I touched iron, it would soften for me and become

Twisted in folds, as braided silk is twisted.

The Chosen One's inheritance—its procession I have won,

A gift of election from the master of the messengers.

    يا طامِسَ القَلبِ جَهْلاً كَيفَ شِئْتَ قُلِ

    All circles lie under the sway of my station;

O you whose heart is blind with ignorance, say what you will.

The people's precincts are under my rule; their great ones

Are servants of my station, at the second draught and the first.

I gave them drink; they grew drunk on my draught and became

Intoxicated, their horsemen and men on foot alike.

God upheld me in the unseen and made me master

Over the men of the sanctuary, and the secret in me is manifest.

Has any saint donned a magnificent robe of honor

Without its embroidery in the unseen coming from me?

    ومن عَداني مَوْهومٌ على فشَلِ

    The age is my age; I am the Succor, giving aid within it;

And whoever is other than me is illusory, mired in failure.

    سلِ الصَّناديدَ أَهلَ الحَلِّ للعُقَلِ

    Ask the pulpits about me while the night is pitch-dark;

Ask the mighty chiefs, masters of untying knots.

Ask the councils, with the Poles thronging

In their spacious courts; ask the clamor of the resounding assembly.

When I came before the Chosen One, he honored me,

And said to me among them, "Blessed are you—what a man!"

You have gone off in delusion, O dupe, denying me

Rashly, like a mosquito that buzzed upon the mountain.

I am the son of Shaykh al-Urayja, the light of his eye,

An offspring that has come forth from that hero.

I am the one upheld and watched over by the gaze that is

Holy, with aid unceasing until the Resurrection.

Whoever touches my hem is safe from his troubles,

And his state has not strayed from the path of safety.
