    My envier saw my stature, and blindness overtook him.

    And he vied with me in delusion, but worry laid him low.

    He sought my dust, but it rose beyond his imagining.

    So he fell, having neither judgment nor understanding.

    So he heaped abuse on me, and my supporter said:

    You rose high through my support; abuse has done you no harm.

    Exult in my kindness, and through my care stand

    strong, and contend with an envier who has no resolve.

    The fragrance of perfume comes from us throughout all existence,

    But the one with a cold has lost his sense of smell.

    He rushed on, angering God, striving in defiance

    of our manifestation, recklessly, though poison had assailed him.

    وما للحَسودِ الخِبِّ قلبٌ ولا جسْمُ

    And with his grudges he crumbled the body of his heart;

    Yet the cunning envier has neither heart nor body.

    The days rise to praise and acclaim us,

    And censure of us is inscribed upon his page.

    على ظُلمَةٍ بَحْتاءَ سَرْبَلَهُ ظُلْمُ

    Dejected and short of reach, he has no light;

    In sheer darkness, wrongdoing has robed him.

    He set about barking to bring down our star.

    And can contemptible barking make the star fall?

    ونحن بنورِ الشَّرْعِ ساعَدَنا الحزمُ

    His belt has indeed been broken by unsound judgment;

    And in the light of sacred law, prudence has aided us.

    ونحن كما يدري بِضاعَتُنا العلْمُ

    His merchandise is ignorance, which has harmed his faith;

    And our merchandise, as he knows, is knowledge.

    He went on burning, denying all our glory.

    Can glory be denied when the brutes reject it?

    We have read the many branches of knowledge and have not found

    an envier with a share in the lot of the exalted.

    Ah, you of noble lineage, you whom I have known

    as a pillar of my house, the gallant one in our household.

    فذي نِعَمٌ لا بدَّ يحسُدُها نُعْمُ

    So be yourself the envied one, and your foe the envier;

    For these are blessings that Nuʿm must envy.

    Men of battle make the horses wheel in fright,

    Yet a knave, his sleeve over his nose, denies them.

    And people of insight, in the embroidery of their qualities,

    bring humiliation to their enviers through their manner of life.

    And the base man broadens his scope through abuse,

    While the noble chief raises his pillars through deeds.

    A scoundrel may deny heroes out of baseness,

    And before the splendor of heroes, the adversary may be silenced.

    Zayd vies with us, though he has no father,

    And Hind disparages us, though she has no mother.

    defenders of the sanctuary if the throng is repulsed by a charge.

    Our prose has held back from scattering jewels,

    And verse has strung moons from our casting.

    Our aspirations tower in loftiness above the heavens,

    And we have an edifice of glory that no mortal can tear down.

    The hand of support built it in the court of favor,

    And the enviers' delusion set about tearing it down.

    فخَلِّ عَليلَ القلبِ يفضَحُهُ الكَتْمُ

    And the All-Merciful has revealed the manifestation of our honor;

    So leave the sick-hearted man; concealment will expose him.

    ويلطُمُهُ الشَّاني وفي وجهِهِ اللَّطْمُ

    And our splendor is the full moon, adorned in the heights;

    And the hater slaps it, but the blow falls on his own face.

    سَما برسولِ اللهِ من بَيْتَها الاسمُ

    And we are the kindred of our master al-Rifaʿi;

    Its household's name rose high through God's Messenger.

    Yes, we are Arabs when we recount the sublime

    meanings; and in this realm our opponents are non-Arabs.

    وغيرَ المَعالي ما لنا عندهُمْ جُرْمُ

    It shattered hearts among them, and they dripped;

    And our only crime in their eyes is lofty attainment.

    Through forbearance we rose beyond an exalted station,

    And dreaming built up their delusions for them in the dark.

    And we are free of the sickness of their doubts.

    Are soundness and sickness alike in their condition?

    وما النُّورُ في المَجْلى سَواءً ولا العَتْمُ

    And we are in light, despite the darkness of their ignorance;

    And light and darkness are not alike in manifestation.

    And we follow in the footsteps of the Messenger Muhammad.

    Say 'God,' you there, and leave them to their designs.

    فلا قولُهُمْ قولٌ ولا حكمُهُمْ حُكْمُ

    They have judged with words, while truth is their adversary;

    So their speech is no speech, and their judgment no judgment.
