أَهَلْwill ...? دارُthe dwelling of ميٍّMayy وهيand it للهِto God دَرُّهاits bounty
تدُرُّpours forth لناfor us غَيْثاًlife-giving rain يبشِّرُbrings good news بالقُرْبِof nearness
Will Mayy's dwelling—God bless its bounty—
pour forth rain for us that heralds nearness?
وهلand can ...? غربَةٌexile شطَّتْhas strayed far لغربيِّto the west of حيِّهِمْtheir encampment

And can exile, straying far to the west of their camp,
bring reunion after dispersal in the east and west?
وهلand is there ...? دَرِبٌan experienced person فيat ساقَةِthe rear of الرَّكبِthe caravan عارِفٌknowledgeable

And is there a seasoned, knowing guide at the caravan's rear
to turn the spare mounts' course toward the road for us?
فنحنُfor we أُناسٌpeople فيin مُعارَكَةِthe struggle of الهَوىlove

For we are people in the struggle of love,
at war with longing, pain, and passion.
صَبَوْناwe yearned ولمَّاand when أَنthat جرتْflowed نجمَةُthe star of الصَّباthe east wind

منfrom الدَّمعِtears زالتْvanished قوَّةُthe strength of الصَّبِّthe lovesick one بالصَّبِّthrough pouring
We yearned; and when the east wind's star streamed
with tears, their pouring drained the lovesick one's strength.

We have accepted love's suffering; so do with us,
O our beloved ones, what is cherished in love's creed.

in either case, whether your judgment bestows or takes away.

We have grown weary, and yet in hardship there is rest
for your sake; be kind and noble, without reproach.

We fast from all but you, seeking divine reward; and our tears
sprinkle the earth's expanses—alas!—with rainclouds.

For you are the highest in every assembly,
given that, by God, you are in the Lord's presence.
