The bān bough fluttered—not with broth [wording unclear].

Welcome to the bān bough when it fluttered!

He made me known, though before longing for him I was

unrecognized; indeed, then, I shall never be known.

    A knowledge unknown, obscure,

yet clear, at which the discerning one halted.

    ففي الخَفَا أصبحْتُ معنًى للخَفَا

    My cup grew clear throughout my life, and faded within my body;

so in hiddenness I became a meaning of hiddenness.

And I stood where beauty manifests, rising

as a full moon, high in the mansions of eminence.

My beloved's breeze startles me with ardent longing.

You have smelled the breeze as it sweeps away longing.

I became a successor to the masters of inwardness,

a man of manifestation, already joined to the forebears.

Truly, God chose me as a spiritual pole, a knower of Him.

Can the trickster cut off one whom God has chosen?

With surging resolve I took up the burden of what

I was charged with, for the glory of the Chosen One's law.

    مَن أُمَّهُ عن طُرُقِ القومِ اكْتَفَى

    And I laid down for the people a radiant path;

whoever seeks it needs none of the people's other paths.

They said, "He has vanished—where is manifestation?" Tell them:

How many a full-moon face has hidden in the folds of veils!

A lightning flash gleams in its season,

when al-Simak emerges clear from its darkness.

Follow my path, acting by my teaching,

and drawing from the seas of my spiritual aspiration.

And stand upon this path, in my footsteps,

so you may behold glory and rise in honor.

Whoever seeks, through error, to overturn its rule

will be terrified, felled by divine decree onto the back of his head.

How often I stood there humbly before God,

communing with Him, in retreat in my mosque.

And the caravan from me to the Beloved, in the darkness,

flies through the wilderness of night travel, never stopping.

And never did I turn toward Him with my spiritual aspiration

but He turned toward me with acceptance.

    إنَّ الثَّباتَ طبعُ أَصحابِ الوَفَا

    So keep my covenant steadfastly, and remain upright;

indeed, steadfastness is the nature of the loyal.

for how many an offender He has sheltered with His favor!

    ما خابَ من راحَ له مُعْتَرِفَا

    And be, then, one who acknowledges His favor;

no one who went to Him in acknowledgment was disappointed.

and night has spread a veil across existence.

And God does what He wills,

despite an ingrate accustomed to obstinacy.

So give thanks for the great blessing He has poured

upon you, and hear the words of a dear friend who has never been harsh.

    أحمَدُهُ في البابِ لن ينصَرِفَا

    A house holds a subtle, obscure secret;

its Ahmad is at the door, never to depart.

God—make none but Him your refuge,

and rely on Him; dust upon the world!
