They said, “Do you love Ali?” I replied joyfully:

“Devotion to Ali is my faith and my night journey’s ascent.”

ألهاشمي هزبر الآل سيدهم

رأس الدواوين فيهم روح كل ولي

The Hashimite, lion of the Household, their master,

Chief of the councils among them, the spirit of every saint;

سرارة المدد الهامي من الأزل

سرارة المدد الهامي من الأزل

Manifest in nobility, the oft-charging warrior, the sīn of the radiance

Of the very heart of aid pouring down from eternity;

The symbol of allusion among the people of truth, the beacon

Of guidance, peer of Ta-Ha—the master of messengers.

فهل ثوت فاطمٌ في غير قبَّته

فهل ثوت فاطمٌ في غير قبَّته

وهل أتي هل أتي ألا به فقل

وهل أتي هل أتي ألا به فقل

And did Fatimah dwell beneath any dome but his?

And did “Has There Come” come except through him? Say!

أتى وليا لأهل الله يجذبهم

أتى وليا لأهل الله يجذبهم

بجذبة المصطفى للعلم والعمل

بجذبة المصطفى للعلم والعمل

He came as a guardian to God’s people, drawing them

With the Chosen One’s pull toward knowledge and action.

غضنفرٌ ذو جلالٍ مثلهُ أبداً

غضنفرٌ ذو جلالٍ مثلهُ أبداً

في خاطر الفلك الدوار لم يجلِ

في خاطر الفلك الدوار لم يجلِ

A lion of majesty—never has his like

Crossed the mind of the revolving firmament.

قدرنَّ منه بجند الغيب صوت هدى

قدرنَّ منه بجند الغيب صوت هدى

أتى لموسى دجى في صفحه الجبل

أتى لموسى دجى في صفحه الجبل

From him rang out, among the hosts of the unseen, a voice of guidance

That came to Moses in darkness on the mountain’s face.

سل عنه عن زمَّ صرعاً كل صافنةٍ

سل عنه عن زمَّ صرعاً كل صافنةٍ

وكلَّ ملتثمٍ من فارسٍ بطل

وكلَّ ملتثمٍ من فارسٍ بطل

Ask about him—how he reined in and felled every poised steed,

And every veiled, valiant horseman.

وسل صفوف الوغى في بدر عنه وسل

وسل صفوف الوغى في بدر عنه وسل

محدَّبات المواضي البيض والأسل

محدَّبات المواضي البيض والأسل

And ask the battle ranks at Badr about him, and ask

The curved backs of keen white swords, and the spears.

واستجل سود ليالٍ خاضها فجلى

واستجل سود ليالٍ خاضها فجلى

بشمس غرته منها دجا الوجل

بشمس غرته منها دجا الوجل

And behold the black nights he braved, dispelling

Their darkness of dread with the sun of his brow.

واذكر معاني أسرارٍ له انبجست

واذكر معاني أسرارٍ له انبجست

من النبي انجلت عن ذلك الزَّجل

من النبي انجلت عن ذلك الزَّجل

And recall the meanings of secrets that welled forth for him

From the Prophet, brought to light through that ringing utterance.

مولاي يا والد السبطين يا سندي

مولاي يا والد السبطين يا سندي

ونور عيني ويا ذخري ويا أملي

ونور عيني ويا ذخري ويا أملي

My master, O father of the two grandsons, O my support,

And light of my eye, O my treasure, O my hope,

ويا وصيَّ رسول الله عنك لنا

ويا وصيَّ رسول الله عنك لنا

منه الفيوضات قد سحَّت ولم تزل

منه الفيوضات قد سحَّت ولم تزل

And O legatee of God’s Messenger, through you to us

His outpourings have flowed and have not ceased.

عليك أزكي سلام الله خذ بيدي

عليك أزكي سلام الله خذ بيدي

وانظر لحالي فإني عنك لم أحل

وانظر لحالي فإني عنك لم أحل

God’s purest peace be upon you; take me by the hand,

And look upon my state, for I have not turned away from you.
