    Is it the full moon, or the beloved's face that appears?

    Dispel our doubt and still the heart, O Sa'd.

    And is it his beauty mark, or a drop of musk wafting fragrance?

    And is it his character, or a garden whose time is eternity?

    And is it the subtlety of the spirit's rule, or the nature of nearness to him,

    though with him there is neither nearness nor distance?

    In what sea is its ebb its very flood?

    Ebb and flood have become equal before its bounteous source.

    فقامَتْ به نُوقُ الهَوَى أَهلُها تَحْدُو

    Mysteries from him have penetrated our inmost heart;

    then, through him, love's she-camels rose, their people chanting them onward.

    Of the moringa, of the sanctuary's fire-stick, I have a tale,

    which the moringa and bay tree told my heart through inner tasting.

    I melt with longing for him and conceal my state.

    And it is a wonder that the slave should love the master.

    My passion is compounded of the elements of infatuation,

    and my beloved—exalted is his rank—is an indivisible essence.

    I loved him passionately; figure and cheek are not my aim,

    unlike one whom figure and cheek have brought to ruin.

    And my Najdi draws me toward him wherever he turns,

    whenever Najd rouses the people in their undertaking.

    The judge of ecstasy indeed sought my punishment out of hostility,

    yet in our law, doubt averts the prescribed penalty.

    I deliberately killed myself; so kill me for that killing,

    and do not leave in the clan one whose deed was deliberate.

    عَذيرُكَ من قلبٍ أضرَّ به الوَعْدُ

    My promise clothes me in heavy cares;

    your pardon for a heart that the promise has harmed.

    It sends forth, from my resolve, toward my masters' thresholds,

    horses—may separation yield no milk—all sleek.

    So I catch up with the night-travelers while the night is exhausting,

    nor has one resolved on striving helped the scorched one.

    يَطيبُ لقلبي في الهَوَى الهجرُ والصَّدُّ

    And I have become inured to rejection and coldness;

    in love, abandonment and rejection are sweet to my heart.

    Were it not for the workings of rejection and its fire,

    the cheek would not be watered all night by our tears.

    وهل غيرُنا في العاشِقينَ له عِنْدُ

    They say that lovers possess steadfastness;

    and who but us has any standing among lovers?

    We trembled and shall never stand firm; our hearts were shaken,

    and in our state, shaking and thunder swept us aloft.

    نعمْ طبعُنا في دِينِنا الشُّكرُ والحمْدُ

    We died and melted, and the entirety of all we were was effaced;

    yes, gratitude and praise are our nature in our faith.

    We were cast upon the thresholds at our beloved's door,

    and however he oversteps—far be it from him!—by God, we shall not overstep.

    So, O king of longings, be gentle with our weakness,

    for you are a sovereign at whose gate we are soldiers.

    So there is no calm breath of which the soul is aware,

    no draught sweet to us, nor any sleepless vigil,

    nor any blink passing swiftly at ease,

    without longing and ecstasy enfolding them all.

    For the one we love, we have renounced all forms of existence,

    if detachment and renunciation please him.

    And behold, we have strung meanings together for his sake,

    as a necklace is strung upon a fine thread.

    له أَبداً في أَمرِنا الحلُّ والعَقْدُ

    Through him we vanished from ourselves, no longer knowing our state;

    the unbinding and binding of our affairs belong to him forever.

    تَساوى لنا في طيِّها الصَّدرُ والوِرْدُ

    We departed and came to water; his arts enchanted us;

    within their folds, leaving the water and coming to drink were one for us.

    So if our parts were dissolved and then divided,

    his name would appear within them, undivided.

    You see how the rose may be effaced and its water pressed out,

    so rosewater bears what the rose bore.

    Likewise, everything issuing from our parts—

    over it hangs a mantle of his secret's radiance.

    May the meeting efface the burning anguish of pain,

    and may good fortune bathe this separation's darkness in moonlight.
