روِّقْclarify كُؤوسَكَyour cups هذاthis الوقتُthe time قدalready راقَbecame clear
روِّقْ كُؤوسَكَ هذا الوقتُ قد راقَ
جَلاunveiled منfrom الغيبِthe unseen لوif حقَّقْتَyou truly discerned إطْلاقَاrelease
جَلا من الغيبِ لو حقَّقْتَ إطْلاقَا
Clear the dregs from your cups; this hour has grown clear.
Quaff your cup, for this is the time, were you to grant freedom.
From the unseen it has unveiled release, if you truly discern.
An open space has appeared from the unseen, were you to realize.
ونمْand sleep أَميناًsecure فإنَّfor indeed السَّعدَgood fortune خادِمُناour servant
ونمْ أَميناً فإنَّ السَّعدَ خادِمُنا
وقدand indeed رَقَمْناwe inscribed بوجهِon the face of السَّعدِgood fortune إشْراقَاradiance
وقد رَقَمْنا بوجهِ السَّعدِ إشْراقَا
And sleep secure, for good fortune is our servant.
And sleep securely, for good fortune serves us.
And we have inscribed radiance upon the face of good fortune.
And we have marked our faces with the light of good fortune.
ماnever زَمْزَمَchanted الرَّكبُthe caravan للعَلياءِtoward the heights فيin زُمَرٍbands
ما زَمْزَمَ الرَّكبُ للعَلياءِ في زُمَرٍ
إِلاَّexcept ورُحْناand we became لهُمْfor them فيamong الحيِّthe clan سُبَّاقاforerunners
إِلاَّ ورُحْنا لهُمْ في الحيِّ سُبَّاقا
Never has the caravan chanted toward the heights in bands,
No throng of eminent men in groups sounded
but we have been their forerunners among the clan.
Except we raced to them in life, preceding.
وقدand indeed تفجَّرَburst forth منَّاfrom us البحرُthe sea مندَفِقاًpouring out
وقد تفجَّرَ منَّا البحرُ مندَفِقاً
لاmay it not زالَcease فيin ساحَةِthe expanse of الأَكْوانِcreated worlds دفَّاقَاgushing
لا زالَ في ساحَةِ الأَكْوانِ دفَّاقَا
And from us the sea has burst forth, pouring out.
And the sea within us burst forth, gushing.
May it ever gush across the expanse of created worlds.
It did not cease to be active in the field of existence.
البابَthe gate قدindeed فتَحَتْهُopened it راحَةٌa palm عَظُمَتْgrew mighty
البابَ قد فتَحَتْهُ راحَةٌ عَظُمَتْ
رغماًin defiance لمنْof whoever رامَsought منهُof it الدَّهرَfor all time إغلاقاclosure
رغماً لمنْ رامَ منهُ الدَّهرَ إغلاقا
The gate has been opened by a palm grown mighty,
The door has been opened by great comfort
despite whoever sought to shut it for all time.
In spite of him who wanted to keep it locked for eternity
يدٌa hand تدلَّتْreached down تجلَّتْbecame manifest منthrough مَكارِمِهاits noble gifts
يدٌ تدلَّتْ تجلَّتْ من مَكارِمِها
قدindeed قلَّدَتْadorned لرِقابِfor the necks of القومِthe people أطواقَاcollars
قد قلَّدَتْ لرِقابِ القومِ أطواقَا
A hand that reached down, manifest through its noble gifts,
A hand stretched out, illuminated by its noble deeds.
has placed collars around the people's necks.
It collared the necks of the people with circlets.
عوِّلْrely عَليناon us فإنَّfor indeed اللهَGod أيَّدَناstrengthened us
عوِّلْ عَلينا فإنَّ اللهَ أيَّدَنا
وقدْand indeed فَتَقْناwe split open منfrom الأَلبابِminds أَرتاقَاsealed seams
وقدْ فَتَقْنا من الأَلبابِ أَرتاقَا
Rely on us, for God has strengthened us.
Rely on us, for God has supported us.
And we have split open the sealed seams of minds.
And we have split open breasts with insights.
بمِنْبَرِat the pulpit of الغيبِthe unseen قدindeed غَنَّsang الخَطيبُthe preacher بِناof us
بمِنْبَرِ الغيبِ قد غَنَّ الخَطيبُ بِنا
وراحَand became كوكَبُناour star الوضَّاحُradiant برَّاقَاgleaming
وراحَ كوكَبُنا الوضَّاحُ برَّاقَا
On the pulpit of the unseen, the preacher has sung of us,
From the pulpit of the unseen, the preacher sang our praises.
and our radiant star has become resplendent.
And our shining star blazed brilliantly.
قُمْناwe stood عنon behalf of المُصْطَفىal-Mustafa (the Chosen One) وُرَّاثَheirs to حكمَتِهِhis wisdom
قُمْنا عن المُصْطَفى وُرَّاثَ حكمَتِهِ
رُحْناwe went forth نُعَلِّمُwe teach أَهلِthe people of الحالِthe spiritual state أَخلاقَاmoral character
رُحْنا نُعَلِّمُ أَهلِ الحالِ أَخلاقَا
We stood in al-Mustafa's stead, heirs to his wisdom.
We rose to inherit the wisdom of the Chosen One.
We went forth to teach the people of spiritual states moral character.
We set out to teach the people of spiritual states noble traits.
وقدْand indeed رَفَعْناwe raised لهذاfor this الشَّأنِcause جلجَلَةًa resounding cry
وقدْ رَفَعْنا لهذا الشَّأنِ جلجَلَةً
وقدْand indeed بنَيْناwe built لعلمِfor the knowledge of الذَّوقِspiritual taste أسواقَاmarkets
وقدْ بنَيْنا لعلمِ الذَّوقِ أسواقَا
And for this cause we have raised a resounding cry.
And we raised up a tumult for this matter.
And we have built markets for the knowledge of spiritual taste.
And we built markets for the science of spiritual taste.
ركبُthe caravan of العَجائِبِwonders عجَّتْclamored منهُfrom it ثائرَةٌa tumult
ركبُ العَجائِبِ عجَّتْ منهُ ثائرَةٌ
لنحوِناtoward us فارْتَوىthen it drank its fill علماًknowledge وأَذواقَاand spiritual tastes
لنحوِنا فارْتَوى علماً وأَذواقَا
The caravan of wonders raised a clamoring tumult
The steed of wonders was stirred up by it.
toward us, then drank its fill of knowledge and spiritual tastes.
So it was saturated with knowledge and tastes toward us.
قدindeed أَلبسَclothed الحالُthe spiritual state منَّاfrom us كلَّevery مُنَتَمِطٍadherent
قد أَلبسَ الحالُ منَّا كلَّ مُنَتَمِطٍ
حالاًa spiritual state وأَكسَبَand imparted to أهلَthe people of الوجدِecstasy إحْراقَاburning
حالاً وأَكسَبَ أهلَ الوجدِ إحْراقَا
Through us, the spiritual state has clothed every adherent
The spiritual state clothed everyone who was ready
in a state, and kindled burning in the people of ecstasy.
With an exalted state and gave the people of ecstasy burning.
العاشِقونَthe lovers علىupon أَعْتابِناour thresholds رَبَضواthey crouched
العاشِقونَ على أَعْتابِنا رَبَضوا
لمْdid not تلقَyou find فيat غيرِother than هذاthis البابِthe gate عُشَّاقَاlovers
لمْ تلقَ في غيرِ هذا البابِ عُشَّاقَا
The lovers have crouched upon our thresholds.
The lovers prostrated themselves at our threshold.
You have found no lovers at any gate but this.
No other door found as passionate lovers as this one.
قدْindeed أُعرِقَتْwas rooted deep بفُنونِin the arts of الذَّوقِspiritual taste طِينَتُناour clay
قدْ أُعرِقَتْ بفُنونِ الذَّوقِ طِينَتُنا
منfrom عالَمِthe realm of الخلْقِcreation والتَّكْوينِand formation إعْراقَاdeep-rootedness
من عالَمِ الخلْقِ والتَّكْوينِ إعْراقَا
Our clay has been deeply imbued with the arts of spiritual taste,
Our essence was heated by the arts of spiritual taste
from the realm of creation and formation, down to its roots.
From the world of creation and formation into sweat.
الأُسْدُthe lions ترهَبُناfear us فيin كلِّevery نازِلَةٍcalamity
الأُسْدُ ترهَبُنا في كلِّ نازِلَةٍ
تَرىyou see لهاin them فيamid قُوىthe forces of الميدانِthe arena إطْراقَاbowing of heads
تَرى لها في قُوى الميدانِ إطْراقَا
The lions fear us in every calamity.
The lion fears us in every crisis.
You see them bow their heads amid the arena's forces.
It sees that the powers of the battlefield have recoiled from it.
وقلبُand the heart of أجرَإهاtheir boldest فيat بابِthe gate of أَضْعَفِناour weakest
وقلبُ أجرَإها في بابِ أَضْعَفِنا
ماnot زالَceased فيamid هَتَفاتِthe cries of الخوفِfear خفَّاقَاfluttering
ما زالَ في هَتَفاتِ الخوفِ خفَّاقَا
And the heart of their boldest, at the gate of our weakest,
And its fierce heart in the door of our weakest one
has never ceased fluttering amid the cries of fear.
Did not cease to flutter in the cries of fear.
لناwe have بواسِطَin Wasit فحْلٌa stallion يُسْتَجارُrefuge is sought بهِwith him
لنا بواسِطَ فحْلٌ يُسْتَجارُ بهِ
إنْif طبَّقَcovered الأَرضَthe earth سيْلُthe torrent of الخطبِcalamity أَطْباقَاlayer upon layer
إنْ طبَّقَ الأَرضَ سيْلُ الخطبِ أَطْباقَا
In Wasit we have a stallion with whom refuge is sought,
Through our champion, protection is sought.
if the torrent of calamity covers the earth layer upon layer.
If the flood of calamities pressed the earth flat in layers.
أَبوfather of العَواجِزِthe helpless شيخُthe shaykh of الكَوْنthe cosmos منthe one who ملأَتْfilled
أَبو العَواجِزِ شيخُ الكَوْن من ملأَتْ
أَسرارُهُhis secrets زُمَرَthe bands of الأَحْبابِbeloved ones أَشْواقَاlongings
أَسرارُهُ زُمَرَ الأَحْبابِ أَشْواقَا
Abu al-Awajiz, the shaykh of the cosmos, whose
Master of the helpless, Shaykh of the universe, his secrets
secrets have filled bands of beloved ones with longing.
Filled the groups of beloved ones with passions.
كمhow many حربَةٍa spear برَزَتْemerged منfrom كِنِّthe shelter of هِمَّتِهِhis spiritual resolve
كم حربَةٍ برَزَتْ من كِنِّ هِمَّتِهِ
فابْتَزَّthen he seized منهاfrom them لقلبِfor the heart of الخصمِthe foe فتَّاقَاa cleaving one
فابْتَزَّ منها لقلبِ الخصمِ فتَّاقَا
How many a spear has emerged from the shelter of his spiritual resolve,
How many sharp blades emerged from his determination
then he seized from them one to cleave the foe's heart.
And snatched fragments from the heart of the enemy!
روحُthe spirit of الوَلايَةِsainthood فيin مهدِthe cradle of النُبوَّةِprophethood منfrom
روحُ الوَلايَةِ في مهدِ النُبوَّةِ من
سِرِّthe secret of الغُيوبِunseen realms أَفادَbestowed on القيْدَthe fetter إطْلاقَاrelease
سِرِّ الغُيوبِ أَفادَ القيْدَ إطْلاقَا
The spirit of sainthood, in the cradle of prophethood, from
The spirit of sainthood in the cradle of prophecy, from
the secret of unseen realms, has bestowed release upon the fetter.
The secret of the unseen, gave freedom to the fettered one.
وُرِّثْتُهُI was made to inherit it إرْثَas the inheritance of بيتٍa house لاno نِزاعَdispute بهover it
وُرِّثْتُهُ إرْثَ بيتٍ لا نِزاعَ به
قدindeed خَطَّhe inscribed فيin صُحُفِthe scrolls of التَّقليدِinvestiture إحْقاقَاconfirmation
قد خَطَّ في صُحُفِ التَّقليدِ إحْقاقَا
It was bequeathed to me as a household inheritance, beyond dispute.
I inherited from him an inheritance with no contention over it.
He has inscribed confirmation in the scrolls of investiture.
It was delineated in the scriptures of tradition as an entitlement.
قُلوبُناour hearts اتَّصلتْjoined غيباًin the unseen وماand not انْفَصَلَتْparted
قُلوبُنا اتَّصلتْ غيباً وما انْفَصَلَتْ
ماnot زخرَفَتْembellished مثلَlike بعضِsome of النَّاسِthe people أوفاقَاtalismanic squares
ما زخرَفَتْ مثلَ بعضِ النَّاسِ أوفاقَا
Our hearts have joined in the unseen and have not parted.
Our hearts were connected in secret and never separated.
They have not embellished talismanic squares like some people.
They were not decorated like some people’s alliances.
ولاnor تنهْنَهَheld back منهُمْamong them فارِسٌa knight خَطِرٌformidable
ولا تنهْنَهَ منهُمْ فارِسٌ خَطِرٌ
إِلاَّexcept وعاجِزُناand our helpless one حرْباًin battle لهُover him فاقَاsurpassed
إِلاَّ وعاجِزُنا حرْباً لهُ فاقَا
Nor has any formidable knight among them held back,
No valiant horseman from them provoked us
without our helpless one surpassing him in battle.
Except our weak one was equal to him in war.
تلكَthose المَواهِبُgifts والرَّحمنُand the All-Merciful واهِبُهاtheir giver
تلكَ المَواهِبُ والرَّحمنُ واهِبُها
لهُHis is التَّحَكُّمُsovereign command إسْباغاًlavish bestowal وإغْراقَاand overflowing abundance
لهُ التَّحَكُّمُ إسْباغاً وإغْراقَا
Those are the gifts, and the All-Merciful is their giver.
Those gifts, and the Merciful is their granter.
His is the sovereign command, in lavish and overflowing bestowal.
To Him belongs determination, whether to give abundantly or restrict.
فرُحْso go forth فَسيحَspacious رِحابٍcourtyards رَيِّضاًgentle أَبداًalways
فرُحْ فَسيحَ رِحابٍ رَيِّضاً أَبداً
لاdo not تخشَfear منfrom حادِثاتِthe calamities of الدَّهرِtime إعْلاقاentrapment
لا تخشَ من حادِثاتِ الدَّهرِ إعْلاقا
So go forth, your courtyards spacious, ever gentle.
So rejoice expansively, forever at ease.
Do not fear being ensnared by the calamities of time.
Do not fear the occurrences of time restricting you.
وإنْand if تُناويكَopposes you نفسٌa soul فيin توَهُّمِهاits delusion
وإنْ تُناويكَ نفسٌ في توَهُّمِها
فقلْthen say أَخذْتُI took منfrom المَهْدِيِّal-Mahdi (the rightly guided one) ميثاقَاa covenant
فقلْ أَخذْتُ من المَهْدِيِّ ميثاقَا
And if a soul opposes you in its delusion,
And if a soul purposes against you in its imagination,
then say: I have taken a covenant from al-Mahdi.
Say, “I have taken a covenant from the Guide.”
