O gazelle’s glance from the western side of Laʿlaʿ, in

the valley of al-ʿAqīq, you have stolen my heart—so turn to look.

And you, O breeze of the valley, unhurriedly

pass gently, for the lover’s heart is tender because of you.

Woe is me for a heart’s fire, whose flame has flared

between a breeze that wafts by and one who turns to look.

I implore you by God, O gazelle of the broad valleys, so stop,

and with coy charm answer my question—may you prosper.

    حَطَطْتُ في بابِهم يا ظبيُ راحِلَتي

    On the right side of the valley-bend are loved ones I adore;

I halted my riding-camel at their gate, O gazelle.

Have they any mercy for me? Indeed, I am lovesick.

They, not this universe’s passing things, are my concern.

Then he said, “The glad news will kill you”; so I said to him,

“Bring glad tidings, O gazelle, and kill me—and take my blood-money.”

Then he said, “They have promised you union—die of rapture!”

So I died to the existence of my earthly world and my hereafter.
