Through the secrets of witnessing, we longed for your countenance,

and those meanings, rather than the Ragha'ib prayer.

The heart within us shuns every murmurer,

love-distraught, who raised dust among the led mounts.

Despite weariness, we have chosen companionship

in your presence over every intimate friend and companion.

Through you we vanished from ourselves, for you are our life,

the substance of what we seek, and all our desires.

By your right, we are indeed blind to all besides you,

thus effaced, oblivious to the world's East and West.

    وكم للمُحِبِّينَ الأُولى من مذاهِبِ

    In the heart's sacred law, you are our path;

and how many paths those lovers have!

Wondrously, through ardent love of you, we find sweet

the manifold kinds of suffering and hardship.

Yes, in the assemblies of our existence we are deaf,

through your path, to every reprover's reproach.

    زوانا سَناها عن جميعِ الجوانِبِ

    We made you the prayer-direction where our heart stands;

its radiance drew us away from every other direction.

    قُطِعنا بكم عن بارِزاتِ المطالِبِ

    You are our quest at the Gathering and Resurrection;

through you we were severed from outward aims.

Your subtle influence bestowed upon our spirit's ascent

guidance, so it turned from every comer and goer.

We beheld a plain for you in the wilderness of the unseen,

when riders murmured among the open plains.

By Him who bestowed might and loftiness upon you,

and drew you forth, an arrow for the adversary's eye,

and brought you forth from the heart of Hashim's hue,

and through you exalted the eminence of Lu'ayy ibn Ghalib,

and made you the locus of the address conveying His command,

with the finest address, before the finest speaker,

and established you in the holy presence as a mercy

to all creation's non-Arabs and Arabs,

and through you restrained calamity's hand and protected you,

and through you protected your servants in misfortune,

and gave you the primordial secret, with full realization

of it; then from it you spread shining virtues,

and displayed wonders for you through miracles

that, in their surpassing excellence, astounded the realm of wonders,

and strengthened you with terror, until before you dispersed

the dark masses of enemy bands,

and through you illumined the heart of every believer in God's oneness,

and made you rise as a sun for the spirit of the beloved ones,

and made the sea of His outpouring stream from your palms,

so it poured gifts upon your seekers,

and purified you of the touch of every flaw,

and guarded your sanctuary against the dust of faults,

and brought forth from the sovereignty of your beauty's light

divine witnessing for the watchful eye.

Your humble servant was not absent from you for an eye-blink,

in safety, or in a terrifying and overwhelming state.

Your secret shimmered within him and raised him

through your spiritual resolve to the loftiest ranks,

    وزاحَمَ فيكم ثابِتاتِ الكواكِبِ

    and exalted his virtues above the Pleiades;

and through you he vied with the fixed stars.

He tasted subtle wine from the tavern of your nearness,

then in drunkenness became oblivious to every drinking-place.

You poured upon him your state and your qualities,

so through you he became sultan of those of high station.

Ah, physicians of hearts, I swear an oath

by you—for surely you are our fortress in calamities.

I was distraught with love for you before my clay was formed,

and wondrously, one present bears an absent one's thorns.

Whenever my eye weeps at the dawning of your face,

it pays sorrows their due with the clouds' downpour.

    إِذا لم أمُتْ هذا عجيبُ العَجائِبِ

    My reprovers marvel that I die of love for you;

if I did not die, that would be the wonder of wonders.

    ونظْرَتكم يا قومُ كلُّ مكاسِبي

    Some people's gains are gleaming gold;

your glance, O people, is all my gain.

You veiled my tongue from uttering your secret,

out of tenderness for it, O you of delicate brows.

    نقدِّمُهُ دِيناً على كلِّ واجِبِ

    For love of you is a duty upon every rational soul;

as religion, we set it before every obligation.

All religious obligations are sustained by love of you,

and in our Qur'an, one who turns away has no religion,

even if he filled the world with noble sciences

and sent white riding-camels forth for the Qur'an,

and harmed you at heart—then he, through his conjecture,

is held captive, far from drawing near to the Maker.

    فأنعِمْ بقلبي فهو خيرُ مُواظِبِ

    My heart perseveres in circling at your door;

how excellent, then, is my heart, the finest steadfast attendant!

When you accepted your servant, O my beloved ones,

your bounty became my watcher in the realm of my secret.

My heart melted through you; and among love's marvels:

I behold you with a heart truly melted away.

Through you I outstripped your travelers on the day they chanted,

on foot, as they sped on noble riding-camels.

An inscrutable majesty from you calls me to account,

so I dread the might of the reckoner's majesty.

When you marked me as a stranger among your company,

through the meaning of loving you, I came with marvels.

I folded up the carpet of all created beings,

for your sake—strangers among them and kin alike.

I journeyed alone, and through your secret there appeared to me

suns, while my processions circled through existence.

You granted us our hopes—exalted is your station!

So, people of generosity, we feared no plunderer's theft.

You drew our spirit's reins, and it came forward

to your thresholds, drawn by the noblest attractor.

You are none but the eyes of those endowed with guidance

when error sends the poised steeds of darkness racing.

Upon you be God's blessing, embracing your spacious domain

with pure fragrance, O noblest of the pure.

Your humble servant al-Mahdi has sought your courts,

    without a heart's body—no, nor a bodily frame's spirit.

He stripped himself of it, effaced in your beauty,

and died, that the fragrance of affinity might revive him.

So say to him: arise, alive in heart and body,

well-watered by an outpouring, rich in clouds and streaming.

For I mean none but you; I sought neither my outward appearance

for adornment, nor my chaste mother, nor my father.

The Seven Oft-Repeated Verses greeted you with their fragrance,

with melodies of the unseen, sweet in their cadences.

A grace from God's own side extends to you,

overflowing with a sea, teeming with waves and roaring,

that the heart of your servant may long for you

through the mode of self-disclosure, rather than the Ragha'ib prayer.
