بينَbetween بِطاحِthe plains of حَيِّهمْtheir encampment والأبطحِand al-Abtah
طَرحْتُI cast down روحاًa soul عنهُمُfrom them لمdid not تَبْرَحِdepart
Between the plains of their encampment and al-Abtah,
I cast down a soul that has never left them.
وقَدْand indeed فَرشْتُI spread بِثَراهمْupon their soil مُقْلةًan eye
سوىexcept جمالِthe beauty of نورهمْtheir light لمdid not تَلمحِglimpse
And upon their soil I laid an eye
that glimpsed nothing but the beauty of their light.
أقولُI say للرُّوحِto the soul إِذاwhen سارتْit journeys لهُمto them
فَروحيthen go وعلىand at البابِthe door امرَحيfrolic
I say to the soul when it journeys to them:
Ah, then go, and frolic at the door.
وقَبِّليand kiss بِخَشيةٍin reverent fear أعْتابَهُمْtheir thresholds

And kiss their thresholds in reverent fear,
and perfect your resolute aspiration in their presence.
وإنْand if ذَكرتيyou recall فيin المَقامِthe station لَهْفتيmy yearning

And if at the station you recall my yearning,
then speak openly of my burning anguish and lovesickness.

Then cast me within that very sanctuary,
and cast aside the existence of all created things.

And spend noon and evening in the shade of their pillar,
in humble penitence, and spend the morning so.

And be blind to all existence except them,
and approach their beauty, that you may prosper.

And you, O heart, cling in flight
to their hem, and go toward their encampment.

a sun blazing with overflowing radiance.

If only time would let me breathe the scent of their dust!
Yet I think it has not granted leave.

For, when I seek the scent of the dust at their door,
one such as I falls short, and my gaze grows weary.

Indeed, if ever I profess love for them,
I feel ashamed, O Hudhaym, beneath the burden of my sin.

For one such as I—by their exalted rank—
has not been fit for the station of loving them.

But how often the generous one, as is his custom,
bestows his bounty on the weak and gives!

Ah, pity for a love-stricken heart,
love-bewildered, sore and wounded!

It seeks the opening of that sanctuary's doors.
Alas, if the sanctuary's lord does not open!

It seeks nearness to his exalted presence,
yet turns away in shame and withdraws.

Longing checked it, so it lowered its gaze
for its sin, and said, “Beloved, forgive!”

Then a breath of his bounty enfolded it,
saying, “O soul of our servant, rejoice!

Put sorrow aside, and lose yourself in rapture,
and take your ease within our wide expanse.”

Praise be to God! The morning light of union has appeared,
and the night of rejection's terrors has been erased.

In the presence of boundlessness, O soul, roam free!
