باللهby God ياO سائقَdriver of الأظْعانِthe camel-litters خُذْtake خَبَراًa message
منfrom الكَئيبِthe grief-stricken one الَّذيwho أوْدىdestroyed بهhim الخَبَرُthe news
By God, driver of the camel-litters, take a message
From the grief-stricken one whom the news has destroyed.
واذْكُرand mention لأهلِto the people of الحِمىthe protected abode منof شأنِهhis plight أثراًa trace
فالعَيْنُfor the eye غالَتْhas undone بهِhim والشَخْصُand the form والأثَرُand the trace
And tell the people of the protected abode some trace of his plight,
For eye, form, and trace have all undone him.
أضْحىhe became خَيالاًa phantom ولمand not تُدْرِكْwas perceived حَقيقتُهhis true being
إنif يرجعِone turns back الطَّرْفَthe gaze لمnot يَلْحَظْperceives لهof him البَصَرُsight
He has become a phantom, his true being unperceived;
If one turns one's gaze back, sight catches no glimpse of him.
يَموتُhe dies إنif سارتِset out الأظْعانُthe camel-litters مُزْمِعَةًintent on departure
وجْداًfrom longing ويُحْييهِand revives him صَوتُthe sound of الرَّكبِthe caravan إنif خَطَرواthey pass by
He dies if the camel-litters set out, intent on departure,
From longing; the caravan's sound revives him when they pass.
قدْindeed حَمَّلَتْهُhave burdened him اللَّياليthe nights منthrough فِراقهمseparation from them
والهْفَalas for قَلباهُmy heart ماwhat لمnot يَحْملِhas borne البَشَرُhumankind
The nights have burdened him, through separation from them,
Alas, my heart!—with what no mortal has borne.
يَغارُhe is jealous قَلباًat heart عَليهمْover them أنlest يَطوفَcircle بِهمْaround them
إذاwhen تَجَلَّواthey reveal themselves لهto him منfrom عَيْنهِhis eye النَّظَرُthe gaze
His heart is jealous over them, lest they be encircled,
When they reveal themselves to him, by the gaze of his own eye.
قالَsaid العَواذلُthe reproachers غابواthey are absent فارْوِso recount سيرَتَهُمْtheir story
فَقُلْتُso I said فيin القلبِthe heart إنwhether غابواthey are absent وإنand whether حَضرواthey are present
The reproachers said, 'They are gone; recount their story.'
So I said, 'They are in the heart, whether absent or present.'
للهby God منwhat زفراتٍsighs أحْرَقَتْhave scorched كَبديmy liver
لأجْلِهمْfor their sake ودُموعٍand tears دونَهاless than them المَطَرُthe rain
By God, what sighs have scorched my liver
For their sake—and tears that surpass the rain!
ياO سائِقَdriver of العيسِthe white camels والألبابُand minds طائِرَةٌare flying
أوْقفْstill فُؤاديmy heart وإلاor else احْتاطَكَwill encircle you الشَّرَرُthe sparks
O driver of the white camels, while minds take flight,
Still my heart, or sparks will surround you.
هذاthis is حَديثيmy account مُعْتَلٌّflawed بهin it سَنَدٌa chain of transmission
عَمودُهُits main chain مُرْسَلٌdisconnected والنَّصُّand the text مُخْتَصَرُabridged
This is my account: its chain of transmission is flawed;
Its main chain is disconnected, and its text abridged.
قلبيmy heart غَنيٌّis rich بِهمْthrough them عنwithout need of كلِّany بارِزَةٍoutward thing
لكنْyet لَهُمْof them أبداًforever واللهby God مُفْتَقرُin need
My heart, enriched by them, needs nothing outward,
Yet, by God, it is forever in need of them.
ياO منthose who طَوَيتُI folded لهمْfor them كلَّall الوُجودِexistence علىupon

O you for whom I folded all existence into
A single letter, yet you spread my sorrow throughout humankind!
رِقُّواhave compassion لِحاليon my plight فإنيfor I am هائِمٌlove-bewildered دَنِفٌwasted with love
وللمُحبِّينَand to lovers منfrom حاليmy plight بَدَتْhave appeared عِبَرُlessons
Have pity on my plight, for I am love-bewildered and wasted;
And my plight has revealed lessons to lovers.
يَطوفُcircles قَلبيmy heart بلاwithout قَلْبٍa heart بِكَعْبتِكُمْaround your Kaaba
وقدand may يَحُجُّmake the hajj بِمغناكُمْat your dwelling ويَعْتَمِرُand perform the umrah
My heart circles your Kaaba without a heart,
And may make the greater and lesser pilgrimages at your dwelling.
هذاthis is حديثيmy tale بِكُمْof you تُرْوىis narrated رِوايَتُهُits account
وسِفْرُand the book of وَجْديmy longing لكمْfor you تُتْلىare recited بهِin it السُّوَرُthe surahs
This is my tale of you, its story handed down;
And the book of my longing for you, in which surahs are recited.
العَيْنُthe eye باكِيَةٌis weeping والرُّوحُand the soul شاكيةٌis complaining
والصَّبْرُand patience مُفْتَقَدٌis missing والوَجْدُand longing مُدَّخرُis stored up
The eye is weeping, and the soul complaining;
And patience is missing, while longing is stored up.
والحَيُّand the encampment مُبْتَعدٌis far away والمَوْتُand death مُقْتَرِبٌis drawing near
والآهُand the sigh مُنْكَشِفٌis manifest والجَمرُand the burning coal مُسْتَتِرُis concealed
And the encampment is far away, while death draws near;
And the sigh is manifest, while the burning coal is concealed.
ولاand no صَديقٌfriend علىwith هَمِّيmy grief يُساعدُنيhelps me
ولاnor حَبيبيmy beloved لهُhe has فيconcerning حالَتيmy condition نَظَرُregard

And no friend helps me bear my grief,
Nor does my beloved give my condition any heed.
لوif أنَّهاit were فَعْلَةُthe deed of الفاروقِal-Faruq قُلْتُI would say لهُto him
اعْدلْbe just عَليكَupon you سَلامُthe peace of اللهGod ياO عُمَرُUmar
If this were al-Faruq's doing, I would say to him,
'Be just! God's peace be upon you, O Umar!'
لكنَّهاbut it is فِعْلُthe deed of منone who روحيmy soul بِقَبضتِهِin his grasp

وإنَّنيand indeed I am عَبْدُهُhis servant يُفْدىis sacrificed لهُfor him العُمَرُlife
But it is the deed of one who holds my soul in his grasp,
And I am his servant; life is sacrificed for him.
موسىMoses شُؤُنيَmy affairs لمnot يَفْقَهْcomprehended مُعارَكَتيmy struggle
والياسُand Ilyas لمnot يَدْرِknew هذاthis السِرَّsecret والخَضِرُand al-Khidr
The Moses of my affairs did not comprehend my struggle;
And Ilyas did not know this secret, nor did al-Khidr.
ياoh للعجائبِwhat wonders منof سِرٍّa secret أُلَجْلِجُهُI turn over within me
بينيbetween me وبينَand between حبيبيmy beloved الدَّهْرَforever يَسْتَتِرُit remains hidden
Oh, the wonders of a secret I keep turning over,
Forever hidden between me and my beloved!
ليI have منهfrom him قَصدٌa wish وقدand indeed طالَhas grown long المَطالُthe delay بهregarding it

والقَصدُand the wish يَحصُلُis attained إنif ماindeed ساعَدَassists القَدَرُfate
I seek something from him, and the delay has grown long;
And the wish will be fulfilled if fate but lends its aid.

وضِمْنَand amid ضعفيmy weakness بهthrough him لاnot زِلْتُI have ceased أنْتَصِرُto prevail
Indeed, the workings of bounty have warred against me through him,
Yet amid my weakness, through him I still prevail.
وفيand in الهوىlove صِرتُI became رَأساُa leader فيin عِصابَتِهِits band
وهُمْand they are أُناسٌpeople لقدindeed ماتواhave died وماbut not قُبِرواbeen buried
And in love I became a leader within its band,
And they are people who have died, yet were not buried.

When I see them, should a thought of him pass,
It is as though they were raised to life after being gathered.

Through love for him they became renowned throughout all creation,
And within his robe's trailing folds they hid from all but him.

همthey are الحبيبُthe Beloved الَّذيwho عَزَّتْgained honor بهthrough him مُضَرُMudar
Their love annihilated them, yet this is their rightful due:
They are the Beloved through whom Mudar gained honor.

Adnan gained preeminence through him before there appeared
The lights of his form—and so did Ilyas and al-Nadr.

May the God of the Throne bless him as long as there rises
A sun, and the moon gleams in its mansions,

And his family and virtuous companions—for upon them
Peace flows whenever they are mentioned.
