By your lives, O people of the bend of al-Liwā,

and by my ancient pledge, my passion, and my state,

and by a deep longing firmly rooted in the heart,

which has worn out my strength, and by my streaming tears,

and by my scattered hopes in you—and by your lives,

indeed, a lover's hopes are scattered.

In my love for you, I do not turn with caprice

even for a glance; nor do I weary of my burdens.

My resolve through you remains my resolve, and my longing remains

my longing, though the reproacher untouched by love blames me.

And my rapture at your presence has turned me

in sincerity away from my own paternal uncle and my maternal uncle.

Longings for you have played with my whole heart

as the breeze plays with its swaying bough.

And I have vanished from myself in passion for your sake,

and the array of my bodily forms is a phantom's pattern.

Ah, pity the plight of the lovesick one who

has become a phantom within a worn-out cloak.

His sighs blaze with anguish, and his tears

come in a torrent of wondrous states.

And he groans in anguish and falls silent, dazed.

Alas! Such are the wonders of these states.

He has become love's fallen victim, yet no

black pupil of a white gazelle or gazelle has slain him.

Indeed, the one who wrote the covenants in love

    in the unseen made him a stranger according to a pattern;

so he became a stranger through passion for you, and his passion

for your presence is a kind of parable.

Do not sever the old affection, by your rightful due,

for your humble servant has not forgotten affection.

And he passes by the unyielding stone, and it bends

toward him in compassion, for he is the steadfast one.

I swear by the dust of your dwellings—and truly,

to me this is the great, precious oath.

My gaze has not returned to me, nor has it encompassed

the majesty of your manifestation, beyond compare.

And the battalion of eyes has not halted, nor

touched, in your presence, the trailing hems.

Through you I have risen from my nonexistence, as though I were

a weave of shadows for your august figure.

I have drawn no sigh, nor rested, nor

has your state been firmly lodged in my mind.

O people of the bend of al-Liwā, by your lives,

do not leave me a morsel for terrors.

Bestow upon me a potent breath

that gently draws me out of the mire.

    وتعطفوا فضلاً بحلِّ عقالي

    And be generous, O my masters, and show compassion;

and graciously show kindness by untying my tether.

For love of you is my religion, and the sign of your covenant

is my robe against the heat of every estrangement.
