    حَكَتْ لنا كيفَ يَذوبُ العاشقُ

    By a melody that came from the right side of the encampment,

    and told us how the lover melts;

    وأنَّهُ والله فجرٌ صادقُ

    and by their dawn, when its countenance rose,

    and it is, by God, a true dawn;

    يا نِعْمَ ذاكَ سابقٌ ولاحقُ

    and by an earlier tear of mine and a later one;

    Ah, how fine are that earlier tear and the later one!

    وقد يَريعُ العاشقينَ الطَّارقُ

    and by a night visitor who came from the anguish of yearning;

    and the night visitor may frighten lovers;

    فَفَجَّ في الأكوانِ ذاكَ البارِقُ

    and by a lightning flash that glittered from their sky;

    then that flash cleaved a path through the worlds;

    أعْشَقُهُ ما ذَرَّ منِّي شارقُ

    and by a dawning light that looked down upon my innermost self;

    I adore it as long as a light dawns from me;

    أجلْ ومثلي في الرِجالِ الواثِقُ

    I am true to my pledge, steadfast in resolve;

    yes, among men, one like me is steadfast.

    O driver of the departing caravans, take my heart,

    and set it down at their door, O driver.

    A band stole al-Aziz's measuring cup,

    and here I am, called the thief.

    A remnant of the heart within their baggage—

    yearning and unrestrained tears deposited it.

    Had I been among them, the measuring cup would have spoken to them,

    and they would have been astounded, for the lifeless thing was speaking.

    فالحَدْوُ حلوٌ والغَرامُ شائِقُ

    My soul has hummed since the camel-driver sang them onward;

    for the driving-song is sweet, and passion is enthralling.

    يعرِفُها ربُّ الغَرامِ الذائِقُ

    One untouched by love has denied my anguish for them;

    the master of passion who has tasted it knows it.

    Oh, my anguish! Separation has held me back,

    and on many a day, obstacles multiply.

    يعرِفُ حَرَّ نارِهِ المُفارِقُ

    I reproach fate and love on their account;

    the one who is parted knows the heat of its fire.

    If a creature denies my anguish for them,

    the Creator bears witness for me to its truth.

    However long existence lasts, annihilation follows it,

    and on many a day, truths become manifest.

    O you who dwell in my heart, by your sanctity—

    and an oath in love has its wonders—

    شِبْتُ ووجدي في الهَوَى مُراهِقُ

    I am steadfast in the faith of loving you;

    I have grown gray, yet my yearning in love is still a youth.

    Smelling your musk has intoxicated even one with a cold,

    in the West, while it wafts its fragrance in Iraq.

    O you toward whom our gazes have aspired,

    creation has made you known to us.

    Come to our caravan's aid, for weak have grown

    its sinews, and the driver has grown weary in its midst.

    فمنكُمُ تُتَوَّجُ المَفارِقُ

    And with your might, regard the abasement of our helplessness;

    for through you heads are crowned.

    ما كلُّ من يزعُمُ عِشْقاً عاشِقُ

    And treat us generously according to your justice;

    not everyone who claims passionate love is a lover.

    للهِ في أَكْوانِهِ طَرائِقُ

    And shorten our path through your secret;

    God has paths within His worlds.

    For our love is a reality, known to

    the one at odds with the age and the one in accord.

    تفضَّلوا وللقُلوبِ رافِقوا

    Give charity, be generous, show compassion;

    bestow favors, and be companions to hearts.

    For all of you are realities of our secret,

    and all of us are subtleties through love of you.
