أطْلَعَbrought forth الحُسْنُbeauty منfrom سَناكَyour radiance هِلالاa crescent
أطْلَعَ الحُسْنُ من سَناكَ هِلالا
مَلأَfilled الكَوْنَthe universe بَهْجَةًjoy وجَمالاand beauty
مَلأَ الكَوْنَ بَهْجَةً وجَمالا
Beauty brought forth a crescent from your radiance,
Which filled the universe with joy and beauty.
كُلَّماwhenever مالَswayed غُصْنُthe branch لُطْفِكَyour grace فيناamong us
كُلَّما مالَ غُصْنُ لُطْفِكَ فينا
كُلُّناall of us نَحْوَهُtoward it معَwith الوَجْدِecstasy مالاswayed
كُلُّنا نَحْوَهُ معَ الوَجْدِ مالا
Whenever the branch of your grace swayed among us,
We all swayed toward it in ecstasy.
ياO حَبيباًbeloved قدindeed حَرَّمَforbade الوَصلَunion عِزًّاin proud dignity
يا حَبيباً قد حَرَّمَ الوَصلَ عِزًّا
قدindeed جَعَلْناwe have made لكَfor you الدِّماءَthe blood حَلالاlawful
قد جَعَلْنا لكَ الدِّماءَ حَلالا
O beloved who has forbidden union in proud dignity,
We have made our blood lawful for you.
كمْhow often نُناجيكَwe commune with you قائلينَsaying أغِثْناhelp us
كمْ نُناجيكَ قائلينَ أغِثْنا
بالتَّدانيby drawing near وكمْand how often أجَبْتَyou answered بِلالاwith 'no, no'
بالتَّداني وكمْ أجَبْتَ بِلالا
How often we commune with you, saying, 'Help us
By drawing near!' And how often you answered, 'No, no!'
ارْحَمِhave mercy on الخاشِعينَthe humble فالقَلْبُfor the heart منهُمْamong them
ارْحَمِ الخاشِعينَ فالقَلْبُ منهُمْ
طائرٌflying والجُسومُand the bodies صارتْbecame خَيالاa phantom
طائرٌ والجُسومُ صارتْ خَيالا
Have mercy on the humble, for their heart
Is in flight, and their bodies have become phantoms.
لَطُفَتْgrew subtle كالظِّلالِlike shadows والعَجَبُand the wonder البَحْthe sheer (word continues)
لَطُفَتْ كالظِّلالِ والعَجَبُ البَحْ
تُcompletion of 'sheer' ظِلالٌshadows يُقيمُraises عنهُfrom it ظِلالاshadows
تُ ظِلالٌ يُقيمُ عنهُ ظِلالا
They grew subtle as shadows; the sheer wonder
Is shadows raising shadows from themselves.
لاdo not تَدَعْناleave us رَهْنَcaptive to القَطيعَةِestrangement إنَّاindeed we
لا تَدَعْنا رَهْنَ القَطيعَةِ إنَّا
قدindeed قَطَعْناwe have cut off منfrom غيرِكَother than you الآمالاthe hopes
قد قَطَعْنا من غيرِكَ الآمالا
Do not leave us captive to estrangement, for we
Have cut off all hope in anyone but you.
وتَدارَكْand remedy أحْوالَناour states بِقَبولٍwith acceptance
وتَدارَكْ أحْوالَنا بِقَبولٍ
فهوَfor it لاno شَكَّdoubt يُصْلِحُsets right الأحْوالاthe states
فهوَ لا شَكَّ يُصْلِحُ الأحْوالا
And remedy our state by accepting us,
For that will surely set our state right.
ماnot ذَكَرْناكَwe remembered you إيyes وحَقِّكَand by your honor إِلاَّexcept
ما ذَكَرْناكَ إي وحَقِّكَ إِلاَّ
وسَحابُand the cloud الدُّموعِthe tears كالسَّيلِlike a torrent سالاflowed
وسَحابُ الدُّموعِ كالسَّيلِ سالا
Never have we remembered you—yes, by your honor—
Without the cloud of tears flowing like a torrent.
وتَراناand you see us نَميلُwe sway ميلَthe sway of غُصونٍbranches
وتَرانا نَميلُ ميلَ غُصونٍ
هَزَّهاshook them الرِّيحُthe wind يَمْنَةًrightward وشِمالاand leftward
هَزَّها الرِّيحُ يَمْنَةً وشِمالا
And you see us sway as branches sway,
Shaken by the wind to right and left.
لاnot تَرىyou see العَيْبَthe fault إنَّindeed عَفْوكَyour pardon جَمٌّabundant
لا تَرى العَيْبَ إنَّ عَفْوكَ جَمٌّ
فاقْضِso grant عَفْواًpardon لاdo not تُشْمِتِmake gloat العُذَّالاthe reproachers
فاقْضِ عَفْواً لا تُشْمِتِ العُذَّالا
You see no fault, for your pardon is abundant.
So grant pardon; do not let the reproachers gloat.
بِخُضوعٍwith submission لناof ours وصِدْقِand sincerity of خُشوعٍhumility
بِخُضوعٍ لنا وصِدْقِ خُشوعٍ
ألْبَسَclothed القلبَthe heart بَأسَهُits strength إذْلالاabasement
ألْبَسَ القلبَ بَأسَهُ إذْلالا
With our submission and sincere humility
That clothed the heart's strength in abasement.
لُحْappear لناto us بالجَمالِin beauty واحْنُنْand have compassion عَلَيناon us
لُحْ لنا بالجَمالِ واحْنُنْ عَلَينا
قدindeed فَنيناwe were annihilated لمَّاwhen ارْتَدَيْتَyou donned الجَلالاmajesty
قد فَنينا لمَّا ارْتَدَيْتَ الجَلالا
Appear to us in beauty, and have compassion on us;
We were annihilated when you donned majesty.
