    Refresh us, O gentle breezes of the east wind,

    and carry the breaths of youth to gray hair.

    And over the two ribs of dune-grown bān,

    spread a tent of the fragrance of the one we love.

    And when you return with the secrets of the sanctuary,

    mingle with the scent of incense on your night journey.

    Then waft sandalwood over our hills,

    and spread fragrant musk upon us.

    How many a tale we spread in the realm of meanings,

    and crossed a wilderness to draw near.

    And we awaited dawn's rising for them,

    then from its radiance we read the books.

    ما رويْنا خَبَراً عن زَيْنَبَا

    And at Liwa we recounted their tales;

    we told no tale of Zaynab.

    ما أَلِفْنا دونهُمْ بيضَ الظِّبَا

    And we were enamored of them, to the exclusion of others;

    we grew fond of no fair gazelles besides them.

    Ah, for them! Ah, their abandonment!

    How many a heart it seared, how many a mind it swept away!

    And the manifold arts of loving them

    have taught the deniers proper conduct.

    Who will excuse me for a heart absorbed in them,

    in whose courts the hands of Saba have played havoc?

    إِنَّما يدري الهَوى مَنْ جرَّبَا

    From love of them, the core of my heart is melting;

    only one who has experienced love knows it.

    Their cupbearer said, "Take the cup and die."

    They scattered the bubbles over the dust.

    My sickness comes from my distance from their sanctuary.

    Woe! Oh, woe! Oh, woe!

    If a glimpse of their face were revealed to me,

    I would fill the universe with rapture at that glimpse.

    صِرْتُ بين القومِ فيهِمْ عَجَبَا

    In them I am absent from my own presence;

    through them I have become a marvel among the people.

    O Su'ad, for God's sake, spare my heart in its love for them!

    You have indeed torn the veils, O Su'ad,

    and made injustice toward them your habit,

    while we have willingly taken patience as our path.

    Passionate love fluttered over our minds,

    then we sent a cord of our own after it.

    هكذا الله تعالى كَتَبَا

    Our resources were cut off in our love for them;

    thus has God Most High decreed.

    How could I forget, among the riders of the sanctuary,

    the day they said, "O stranger among strangers"?

    إِنَّ في هذا منَ الغيبِ نَبَا

    They confirmed to me my estrangement in loving them;

    indeed, in this there is news from the unseen.
