    My tears are like a rippling torrent,

    Since the driver of the pale camels hummed.

    He journeyed through the night, chanting to the camels.

    Oh, how sweet was what he murmured!

    From Laʿlaʿ he presses onward,

    With the caravan toward Yalamlam.

    I wept in anguish and longing,

    So my people said: keep it secret.

    عَلائِقُ الشَّوقِ تُكْتَمْ

    You have exposed your love, so be patient;

    The bonds of longing are kept hidden.

    ظنَّ العَواذِلُ نُوَّمْ

    So I said: my tears have already betrayed me;

    They thought the reproachers were asleep.

    A friend took pity on my plight,

    Who had learned the lore of passionate love.

    He said: deny love outright,

    And if you are questioned, stammer.

    I blocked my eye's tear duct,

    Until the tears gathered in my eye.

    So they were sent back as fire to my heart,

    And that fire was greater than those tears.

    The Jacob of my heart is sorrowful,

    And the concealer of the garment came forward.

    The well's dark depths have lasted long.

    Oh, may the wolf and the blood be requited!

    والَهْفَ قلبي المُهَيَّمْ

    My companions sent my baggage far away;

    And alas for my love-bewildered heart!

    If I were, by God, among them,

    The measuring cup of al-ʿAziz would speak.
