بَرقُ نُعمانَ عَلى الهائِمِ طَل

بَرقُ نُعمانَ عَلى الهائِمِ طَل

فَنَفَى عَن جِسمِهِ كُلَّ العِلَل

فَنَفَى عَن جِسمِهِ كُلَّ العِلَل

The lightning of Nuʿmān appeared over the love-stricken one;

The lightning of Nu'man flashed over the wanderers

so it banished every ailment from his body,

So it dispelled from his body all illness

وأَراهُ مِن ثَنِيَّاتِ اللِّوى

وأَراهُ مِن ثَنِيَّاتِ اللِّوى

آيَةً جَلَّت بها يُمحى الوَجَل

آيَةً جَلَّت بها يُمحى الوَجَل

and showed him, from the passes of al-Liwā,

And showed him, from the bending places of encampment

a sublime sign through which dread is erased.

A portent through which dread is erased

فَبَكى عَن فَرَحٍ مُستَبشِراً

فَبَكى عَن فَرَحٍ مُستَبشِراً

رُبَّ دَمعٍ لِسُرورٍ قَد هَطَل

رُبَّ دَمعٍ لِسُرورٍ قَد هَطَل

So he wept for joy, rejoicing.

So he wept from gladness, receiving good news

Many a tear has poured down for joy.

Many a tear falls for joy

وَتَداعى بِهيام كُلُّهُ

وَتَداعى بِهيام كُلُّهُ

بَعدَ أن مَلَّ مِنَ الهَجرِ وَكَل

بَعدَ أن مَلَّ مِنَ الهَجرِ وَكَل

And his whole being gave way in love's frenzy,

And all his yearning flocked together

after he had wearied of separation and grown exhausted.

After he was done with estrangement and weariness

يَسَّرَ اللَهُ تعالى المُرتَجى

يَسَّرَ اللَهُ تعالى المُرتَجى

وَصَلَ المَقطُوعَ والحَبلُ اتَّصَل

وَصَلَ المَقطُوعَ والحَبلُ اتَّصَل

God Most High made easy what was hoped for;

God Most High made easy the longed-for

He joined what was severed, and the cord was reconnected.

And joined the cut and the rope connected

وَتَوالَت نَسمَةُ القُربِ فَلا

وَتَوالَت نَسمَةُ القُربِ فَلا

يُختَشَى البَأسُ إِذ القَصدُ حَصَل

يُختَشَى البَأسُ إِذ القَصدُ حَصَل

And the breeze of nearness kept coming, so no

And wafted was a breeze of nearness, so

hardship is feared, since the aim has been attained.

Dread is not feared since the quest is achieved

خَلَقَ اللَهُ مِنَ الخَوفِ الرَجا

خَلَقَ اللَهُ مِنَ الخَوفِ الرَجا

هَكَذا آياتُهُ عَزَّ وَجَل

هَكَذا آياتُهُ عَزَّ وَجَل

God created hope from fear.

God created from fear, hope

Such are His signs—mighty and majestic is He.

Thus His signs, Mighty and Exalted
