كتبَ الظَّلامُ على الوُجودِ سُطورا

كتبَ الظَّلامُ على الوُجودِ سُطورا

والفجرُ أطلْعَ في البَرِيَّةِ نورَا

والفجرُ أطلْعَ في البَرِيَّةِ نورَا

Darkness wrote lines upon existence,

And dawn brought forth light in creation.

خطُّ الظَّلامِ أَفادَنا برُموزِهِ

خطُّ الظَّلامِ أَفادَنا برُموزِهِ

أَنَّ المعاصي تُظلِمُ المَنْشورَا

أَنَّ المعاصي تُظلِمُ المَنْشورَا

Darkness's script taught us through its symbols

That sins darken what is unfolded.

والفجرُ أَفهَمَنا بريقُ ضِيائِهِ

والفجرُ أَفهَمَنا بريقُ ضِيائِهِ

أَنَّ الصَّلاحَ يُنَوِّرُ المَسْطُورَا

أَنَّ الصَّلاحَ يُنَوِّرُ المَسْطُورَا

And the gleam of dawn's radiance made us understand

That righteousness illuminates what is written.

فاجعَلْ لقلبِكَ بالشُّهودِ رُقايَةً

فاجعَلْ لقلبِكَ بالشُّهودِ رُقايَةً

ليكونَ دوماً ضاحِكاً مَسْرُورَا

ليكونَ دوماً ضاحِكاً مَسْرُورَا

So make witnessing a protective charm for your heart,

That it may always be smiling and glad.

واحْفَظْهُ من طمسِ الغَوايَةِ إنَّها

واحْفَظْهُ من طمسِ الغَوايَةِ إنَّها

تدَعُ الفُؤادَ منكَّداً مَقْهُورَا

تدَعُ الفُؤادَ منكَّداً مَقْهُورَا

And guard it from being blotted out by error, for error

Leaves the heart distressed and subdued.

الوِزْرُ يهدِمُهُ ويَخْرِبُ رُكْنَهُ

الوِزْرُ يهدِمُهُ ويَخْرِبُ رُكْنَهُ

والبِرُّ يجعَلُ حِصْنَهُ مَعْمُورَا

والبِرُّ يجعَلُ حِصْنَهُ مَعْمُورَا

Sin demolishes it and ruins its foundation,

And goodness makes its fortress flourish.

فاجْعلهُ منتَبِهاً بربِّكَ عامِراً

فاجْعلهُ منتَبِهاً بربِّكَ عامِراً

ليُريكَ من غيبِ الأَمورِ أُمُورَا

ليُريكَ من غيبِ الأَمورِ أُمُورَا

So make it wakeful, flourishing through your Lord,

That it may show you things from the unseen realm of affairs.

وأَذِبْهُ وألْبِسْهُ الخُشوعَ ومِرْطَهُ

وأَذِبْهُ وألْبِسْهُ الخُشوعَ ومِرْطَهُ

وشِّحْهُ ذِكراً غيبَةً وحُضُورَا

وشِّحْهُ ذِكراً غيبَةً وحُضُورَا

And melt it, and clothe it in humility and its mantle;

Drape it in remembrance, in absence and presence.

وأطِرْهُ في حَضَراتِ حالٍ خالِصٍ

وأطِرْهُ في حَضَراتِ حالٍ خالِصٍ

ليمون فيها سعيَهُ مَشْكُورَا

ليمون فيها سعيَهُ مَشْكُورَا

And make it soar in the presences of a pure state,

So that its striving there may be appreciated.

حقِّقْهُ بالإخْلاصِ واصْلِحْ شأنَهُ

حقِّقْهُ بالإخْلاصِ واصْلِحْ شأنَهُ

بالذِّكرِ يغدو في العُلى مَذْكُورَا

بالذِّكرِ يغدو في العُلى مَذْكُورَا

Make it true through sincerity, and set its affairs right;

Through remembrance it becomes remembered on high.

فالعارِفونَ مرامُهُمْ مَذْكورُهُمْ

فالعارِفونَ مرامُهُمْ مَذْكورُهُمْ

إنْ رامَ قومٌ جنَّةً وقُصُورَا

إنْ رامَ قومٌ جنَّةً وقُصُورَا

For the knowers, their goal is the One they remember,

Even if some people seek Paradise and palaces.

نهَضَتْ إلى مَقْصودِهِمْ هِمَّاتُهُمْ

نهَضَتْ إلى مَقْصودِهِمْ هِمَّاتُهُمْ

وعليه أعواماً طوَتْ وشُهُورَا

وعليه أعواماً طوَتْ وشُهُورَا

Their aspirations rose toward their goal,

And in its pursuit they traversed years and months.

عملُ المُحِبِّ أَغاثَهُ الإخْلاصُ بال

عملُ المُحِبِّ أَغاثَهُ الإخْلاصُ بال

إِقْبالِ حتَّى أنْ غَدا مَبْرُورَا

إِقْبالِ حتَّى أنْ غَدا مَبْرُورَا

The lover's work was aided by sincerity through

Devotion, until it became accepted.

فاخْلصْ بحبِّكَ والقَ حبَّكَ طيِّباً

فاخْلصْ بحبِّكَ والقَ حبَّكَ طيِّباً

إن رُمْتَ منه عنايَةً وظُهُورَا

إن رُمْتَ منه عنايَةً وظُهُورَا

So be sincere in your love, and meet your beloved in purity,

If you seek his care and manifestation.

وامْحَقْ صُنوفَ الحادِثاتِ لأجلِهِ

وامْحَقْ صُنوفَ الحادِثاتِ لأجلِهِ

لتقومَ عنه بسِرِّهِ مَنْصُورَا

لتقومَ عنه بسِرِّهِ مَنْصُورَا

And efface all kinds of created things for his sake,

So you may stand on his behalf, victorious through his secret.

وبنيَّ إيَّاكَ القُنوط فكم وكم

وبنيَّ إيَّاكَ القُنوط فكم وكم

نشَرَ الكَريمُ على العَديمِ سُتُورَا

نشَرَ الكَريمُ على العَديمِ سُتُورَا

And, my son, beware despair, for how often, how often

The Generous One has spread veils over the destitute!

ولكَمْ يُرى ذنْبُ الحَقيرِ لدى العَظي

ولكَمْ يُرى ذنْبُ الحَقيرِ لدى العَظي

مِ تعَزُّزاً بجَلالِهِ مغْفُورَا

مِ تعَزُّزاً بجَلالِهِ مغْفُورَا

And how often the lowly one's sin is seen before the Great One,

Forgiven through seeking strength in his majesty.

وقُمِ الدُّجى في خلوَةٍ متبَتِّلاً

وقُمِ الدُّجى في خلوَةٍ متبَتِّلاً

لتُعَدَّ عبداً للإلهِ شَكُورَا

لتُعَدَّ عبداً للإلهِ شَكُورَا

And keep vigil through the dark night, secluded in devotion,

So you may be counted a grateful servant of God.

ودعِ الحَسودَ وما افْتراهُ وكنْ على

ودعِ الحَسودَ وما افْتراهُ وكنْ على

عزمٍ يَروحُ بخِزْيِهِ مَحْقُورَا

عزمٍ يَروحُ بخِزْيِهِ مَحْقُورَا

And leave the envious man and his fabrications, and hold to

Firm resolve; he departs in disgrace, despised.

واصبِرْ على البلوى اتِّباعاً إنَّه

واصبِرْ على البلوى اتِّباعاً إنَّه

كان النَّبيُّ على البَلاءِ صَبُورَا

كان النَّبيُّ على البَلاءِ صَبُورَا

And bear affliction in emulation, for indeed

The Prophet was patient under affliction.

واستَجْلِ من رُفُفِ الغُيوبِ مسرَّةً

واستَجْلِ من رُفُفِ الغُيوبِ مسرَّةً

تدَعُ الكَسيرَ بلُطْفِها مَجْبُورَا

تدَعُ الكَسيرَ بلُطْفِها مَجْبُورَا

And draw forth from the shelves of the unseen a joy

That leaves the broken one mended by its gentleness.

ولَكَمْ طمى حزنٌ بعتْمٍ طامِسٍ

ولَكَمْ طمى حزنٌ بعتْمٍ طامِسٍ

وعليه قدْ رشَّ الكَريمُ النُّورا

وعليه قدْ رشَّ الكَريمُ النُّورا

And how often sorrow overflowed with blinding darkness,

And the Generous One has sprinkled light upon it.

إيَّاكَ والدُّنيا فَجانِبْها فقدْ

إيَّاكَ والدُّنيا فَجانِبْها فقدْ

قامتْ مَتاعاً للبَصيرِ غُرُورَا

قامتْ مَتاعاً للبَصيرِ غُرُورَا

Beware the world; so shun it, for it has

Stood as deceptive enjoyment for the discerning.

إنْ أَقبلَتْ خُذْها ولا تعبأْ بها

إنْ أَقبلَتْ خُذْها ولا تعبأْ بها

أو أدبَرَتْ دعْها ونَمْ مَسْرُورَا

أو أدبَرَتْ دعْها ونَمْ مَسْرُورَا

If it comes, take it, and pay it no heed;

Or if it turns away, leave it and sleep content.

آياتُ حكمَتِهِ وحكمُ جَنابِهِ

آياتُ حكمَتِهِ وحكمُ جَنابِهِ

والكلُّ كانَ بلوحِهِ مَسْطُورَا

والكلُّ كانَ بلوحِهِ مَسْطُورَا

The signs of his wisdom and the decree of his Presence—

And all was inscribed on his tablet.

واسْلَمْ بتسليمٍ شُموسُ نِظامِهِ

واسْلَمْ بتسليمٍ شُموسُ نِظامِهِ

شرَحَتْ لأَرْبابِ القُلُوبِ صُدُورَا

شرَحَتْ لأَرْبابِ القُلُوبِ صُدُورَا

And find safety in surrender; the suns of his order

Have opened the breasts of those endowed with hearts.

وغَرِ الزَّمانَ على الحَبيبِ فقد ترَى

وغَرِ الزَّمانَ على الحَبيبِ فقد ترَى

أنَّ المحِبَّ على الحَبيبِ غَيُورَا

أنَّ المحِبَّ على الحَبيبِ غَيُورَا

And be jealous for the Beloved against time, for you may see

That the lover is jealous over the Beloved.

وارقُبْ بِشاراتِ السَّماءِ فإنَّها

وارقُبْ بِشاراتِ السَّماءِ فإنَّها

نقَشَتْ على صُحُفِ القُلُوبِ سُطُورَا

نقَشَتْ على صُحُفِ القُلُوبِ سُطُورَا

And watch for heaven's glad tidings, for they

Have engraved lines upon the pages of hearts.

تَفْتَرُّ عن حالٍ خفِيٍّ مُبْهَمٍ

تَفْتَرُّ عن حالٍ خفِيٍّ مُبْهَمٍ

وتَراهُ ضمنَ خِلالِها مَنْظُورَا

وتَراهُ ضمنَ خِلالِها مَنْظُورَا

They part in a smile to reveal a hidden, obscure state,

And you see it, visible in their midst.

فلْيَغْشَ منكَ الطَّوقَ حُبًّا باللِّقا

فلْيَغْشَ منكَ الطَّوقَ حُبًّا باللِّقا

وتَذَكَّرَنْ إذْ حلَّ موسى الطُّورا

وتَذَكَّرَنْ إذْ حلَّ موسى الطُّورا

So let it overwhelm your strength, out of love for the meeting,

And remember well when Moses came to the Mount.

واجْهَدْ فإنْ ما مُتَّ في طُرُقِ الهَوَى

واجْهَدْ فإنْ ما مُتَّ في طُرُقِ الهَوَى

قدْ متَّ مَعْذوراً بها مأجُورَا

قدْ متَّ مَعْذوراً بها مأجُورَا

And strive, for if you die along the paths of love,

You will have died excused there, and rewarded.
