A breeze came to us from the east wind of Najd.

And we lost ourselves amid the breeze's gusts.

And it poured fragrance into our dwellings.

And how sweet a fragrance is its scent!

It reminds us of days gone by,

And sends us back to the time of old.

And writes upon the hearts an inscription of longing.

By God, what an inscription that is!

Within it we confront terrible ordeals,

And through it we revel in wholehearted love.

Within it, hardships taste sweet to us,

As healing is sweet to the sick.

It assails us with yearnings and sorrow,

    As one adversary assails another.

And sends forth workings from its subtle graces,

That pour spirit into crumbling bone.

A boon companion of yearning, a wine of grace,

And intoxication from the wine and the companion.

It passes round for us cups of meaning,

And they sweep away doubts and cares.

And from the cup's bubbles a light appears,

    And strikes every accursed devil.

How often those regions have slain us,

    With a gazelle's eye and a white gazelle's neck!

We walk through them in dread, as though

We were walking on the straight path.

And we take to their forested side,

Walking in sincerity, with a sound heart.

So we walk while the lions roar,

A roar that shakes the mighty mountain's footing.

And, strangely, the lions have raged

And surged among the thicket's gazelles.

By God, how many lions they have crushed—

The white gazelles of al-Hatim, with an eyelash's blade!

They make lovers' lives bitter with longing,

Though they have crossed the smiling meadow.

And sting them with serpents that, by my life,

Are the antidote for the stricken liver.

    And smile, revealing mouths

That guard the treasure with strung pearls.

And how many states lovers undergo through them,

That bewilder the mind of the seasoned sage!

With a state that sways the mountain with longing,

And resolve above the towers of the stars,

And a fire whose smoke rises to heaven,

And tears poured forth like a streaming torrent,

And an absorption of intent, oblivious to all else,

Surpassing the oblivion of the Companions of al-Raqim.

And a groan, followed by a cry of yearning,

    Bringing marvels of agonizing pain.

When their fire flashes upon them,

And Tuwa blazes with its raging flame,

You see the people fallen; within them has arisen

A manifestation that arose in Moses, God's interlocutor.

Intimations that turn night into noon,

And fold noon into the pitch-black night,

And perfect in knowledge one deficient in spiritual insight,

And expose the bewilderment of the learned man,

And bring forth the lowliest servant as a prince,

And lower the prince beneath the servant,

And bring out fierce valor in the coward,

And overturn the calm of a forbearing nature,

And give the divulger of secrets discretion,

And grant disclosure to the secretive man,

And fill the calm-minded with worry,

And free the sorrowful from cares.

And through them the penniless may become rich,

And the owner of wealth become like a pauper,

And the most generous of those singled out become miserly,

And miserliness is folded within the noble, generous man.

    Subtleties of concealed meanings,

Shining forth from the curtains of clouds,

Lift the veil from delicate secrets,

Revealing the secret to the perceptive and discerning.

Reflect upon them—may God guide you.

And draw from their folds the unfolding of knowledge.

For those are truths that have raised the edifices

Of glory's order and the upright way.

Carry, O spirit, my soul toward the encampment.

And say: 'O soul, be enraptured by the beloveds!'

And say: 'O whisper of Satan, depart!'

And say: 'O mercy of the All-Merciful, endure!'
