كُتِبْتُI was inscribed غيباًin the unseen علىaccording to ماwhat قامَwas established فيin الأَزَلِbeginningless eternity
كُتِبْتُ غيباً على ما قامَ في الأَزَلِ
عبدَservant الرِّفاعِيِّal-Rifa'i شيخِshaykh الأُمَّةِthe community البَطَلِthe hero
عبدَ الرِّفاعِيِّ شيخِ الأُمَّةِ البَطَلِ
I was inscribed in the unseen, as established in beginningless eternity,
I was predestined in pre-eternity for what took place,
As servant of al-Rifa'i, the community's heroic shaykh.
The servant of the All-Sustaining, the sheikh of the heroic community.
فَحْلُstallion; foremost master الشُّيوخِthe shaykhs صُدورِleading figures الدِّينِthe faith سيِّدُهُمْtheir master
فَحْلُ الشُّيوخِ صُدورِ الدِّينِ سيِّدُهُمْ
كَنْزُtreasure الحَقائِقِthe truths بحرُocean العلمِknowledge والعَمَلِand practice
كَنْزُ الحَقائِقِ بحرُ العلمِ والعَمَلِ
The stallion among the shaykhs, those leaders of faith—their master,
The solution for the masters, the core of the religion, their master,
Treasure of truths, ocean of knowledge and practice.
The treasure of truths, the sea of knowledge and deed.
فتًىa youth أَقامَraised شِراعَthe sail المجدِglory فانْتَظَمَتْand so became ordered
فتًى أَقامَ شِراعَ المجدِ فانْتَظَمَتْ
لمجدِدِهِfor its renewer دَوْلَةُrealm الإِرْشادِguidance فيin المِلَلِthe faiths
لمجدِدِهِ دَوْلَةُ الإِرْشادِ في المِلَلِ
A youth who raised glory's sail, and so was arrayed
A young man who set up the banner of glory, so his state of guidance was systematized
For its renewer the realm of guidance among the faiths.
Among the sects, the renewer, the guide.
كأنَّهُas though he فوقَupon كُرسِيِّthe chair الخِطابَةِpreaching فيat
كأنَّهُ فوقَ كُرسِيِّ الخِطابَةِ في
صَدْرِthe forefront المَحافِلِthe assemblies موْلاناour master الإِمامُthe Imam عَليAli
صَدْرِ المَحافِلِ موْلانا الإِمامُ عَلي
As though he were, upon the preacher's chair, at
As if atop the pulpit of rhetoric in the breast of circles -
The forefront of assemblies, our master, Imam Ali.
Our master the imam Ali.
حَذاhe followed بسيرَتِهِin his conduct العَلياlofty ومذْهَبِهِand his way
حَذا بسيرَتِهِ العَليا ومذْهَبِهِ
حَذْوَthe example of الرَّسولِthe Messenger وحَذْوَand the example of السَّادَةِthe masters الأُوَلِthe earliest
حَذْوَ الرَّسولِ وحَذْوَ السَّادَةِ الأُوَلِ
He followed, in his lofty conduct and his way,
He emulated in his sublime conduct and creed
The Messenger's example and that of the earliest masters.
The emulation of the Messenger and the early masters.
منfrom أَهْلِthe people of بيتٍa household لَهُمْfor them فيin كلِّevery زاوِيَةٍcorner
من أَهْلِ بيتٍ لَهُمْ في كلِّ زاوِيَةٍ
سِرٌّa mystery خَفِيٌّhidden وشأْنٌand a stature كالصَّباحِlike the morning جَليclear
سِرٌّ خَفِيٌّ وشأْنٌ كالصَّباحِ جَلي
From a household whose members have, in every corner,
From a Household who in every corner have a hidden, occult affair
A hidden mystery and a stature clear as morning.
And a clear, brilliant matter.
مُحَجَّبٌveiled منamong أُسودِthe lions of اللهِGod ذوpossessing مَدَدٍspiritual aid
مُحَجَّبٌ من أُسودِ اللهِ ذو مَدَدٍ
سارٍpervading تصرُّفُهُhis sway فيin الكَوْنِthe universe لمnot يَزُلِhas ceased
سارٍ تصرُّفُهُ في الكَوْنِ لم يَزُلِ
Veiled, one of God's lions, endowed with spiritual aid,
Veiled from the lions of God, with continual aid,
His sway pervades the universe and has never ceased.
Whose disposal in the universe did not cease.
وشيخُand a shaykh نهجٍa path كَريمٍnoble فيin تَنَقُّلِهِhis movement
وشيخُ نهجٍ كَريمٍ في تَنَقُّلِهِ
عمfrom (apparently a typo) مذهبِthe way الهاشِمِيِّthe Hashimite الطُّهْرِthe pure one لمnot يَحُلِdid he stray
عم مذهبِ الهاشِمِيِّ الطُّهْرِ لم يَحُلِ
And a shaykh of a noble path, who in his movement
And the sheikh of a noble path in his travels
Never strayed from the pure Hashimite's way.
Clung to the Hashimi way of purity, did not violate it.
فَخْرُpride العَصائبِthe clans منfrom بيتِthe household of الرَّسولِthe Messenger أَبوfather of الthe (name prefix)
فَخْرُ العَصائبِ من بيتِ الرَّسولِ أَبو ال
عَبَّاسِAbbas شمسُsun المَعاليlofty honors مُنتهَىthe utmost الأَمَلِhope
عَبَّاسِ شمسُ المَعالي مُنتهَى الأَمَلِ
Pride of the clans, from the Messenger's household, Abu al-
The pride of lineages from the House of the Messenger, Abu al-Abbas,
'Abbas, sun of lofty honors, the utmost hope.
The sun of glories, the utmost hope.
بابُgate الشُّهودِspiritual witnessing مُفيضُoutpourer of الجُودِgenerosity فجرُdawn سَماsky (first part)
بابُ الشُّهودِ مُفيضُ الجُودِ فجرُ سَما
ءِsky (completion) الفَخْرِglory رَحْبُbroad الحِمىthe sanctuary سُلطانُsovereign كلِّevery وَليsaint
ءِ الفَخْرِ رَحْبُ الحِمى سُلطانُ كلِّ وَلي
Gate of witnessing, outpourer of bounty, dawn of the sky
The door of divine attractions, the cloud of generosity, the dawn
Of glory, with a vast sanctuary, sovereign of every saint.
Of the heaven of pride, the sanctuary of every saint.
رُكنُpillar الشَّريعَةِthe sacred law ممْدوحُpraised الطَّريقَةِthe spiritual path كَشَّunveiler (first part)
رُكنُ الشَّريعَةِ ممْدوحُ الطَّريقَةِ كَشَّ
افُunveiler (completion) الحَقيقَةِthe truth غوْثُsuccor الخائِفِthe fearful الوَجِلِthe trembling
افُ الحَقيقَةِ غوْثُ الخائِفِ الوَجِلِ
Pillar of sacred law, praised in the spiritual path, unveiler
The pillar of Sacred Law, the praised of the spiritual path, the unveiler
Of truth, succor of the fearful and trembling.
Of the reality, savior of the anxious, the reverent.
تُنْمىare ascribed المَعاليlofty honors لبيتٍto a household كانَhe was سيِّدَهُits master
تُنْمى المَعالي لبيتٍ كانَ سيِّدَهُ
حقًّاtruly وينْحَطُّand sinks عنbelow عَلياهُhis eminence كلُّevery عَليexalted one
حقًّا وينْحَطُّ عن عَلياهُ كلُّ عَلي
Lofty honors are ascribed to a house whose master he was,
Glories are brought out for a Household whose master was truly
Truly; every exalted one falls below his eminence.
Right, and every glory humbles itself to its loftiness.
طَوْدٌa mountain منof السُنَّةِthe Sunnah السَّمْحاءِgracious قامَarose لهfor him
طَوْدٌ من السُنَّةِ السَّمْحاءِ قامَ له
شأْنٌa stature عَلاrose ذَيْلُهُits hem عنabove قُبَّةِthe dome of الحَمَلِAries
شأْنٌ عَلا ذَيْلُهُ عن قُبَّةِ الحَمَلِ
A mountain of the gracious Sunnah; there arose for him
A towering mountain of beautiful Sunna that established for him
A stature whose hem rose above the dome of Aries.
A matter high whose train lifted from the dome of Resolution.
آثارُهُhis traces فيon جِباهِthe brows of الفخرِglory لامِعَةٌshining
آثارُهُ في جِباهِ الفخرِ لامِعَةٌ
وطَوْرُهُand his state صِينَwas protected عنfrom شَطْحٍecstatic excess وعنand from زَلَلِerror
وطَوْرُهُ صِينَ عن شَطْحٍ وعن زَلَلِ
His traces shine upon the brows of glory,
Its marks are shining on the brows of pride
And his state was guarded from ecstatic excess and from error.
While its state is guarded from excess and pitfalls.
مُبارَكُblessed الوجهِthe face محمودُpraiseworthy الجَنابِpresence; dignity وفيand in الthe
مُبارَكُ الوجهِ محمودُ الجَنابِ وفي ال
هَيْجاءِbattle قُطبُpivot الرَّحىthe millstone السَّاميthe exalted عنbeyond المَثَلِan equal
هَيْجاءِ قُطبُ الرَّحى السَّامي عن المَثَلِ
Blessed of face, praiseworthy in presence, and in the
Blessed of face, praiseworthy of side, and at the ridge
Fray, the millstone's pivot, exalted beyond compare.
The axis of the mill, the highest of examples.
مُحمَّدِيُّMuhammadan سلوكٍconduct لاnot يُحَدُّis bounded لٍfor him (apparently corrupted)
مُحمَّدِيُّ سلوكٍ لا يُحَدُّ لٍ
حدٌّa limit وكُفْءٌand an equal لهto him فيin الشَّأْوِreach; attainment لمnot يَصِلِhas reached
حدٌّ وكُفْءٌ له في الشَّأْوِ لم يَصِلِ
Muhammadan in conduct, for whom there is set no
Possessor of an Muhammadan conduct that has no limit
Limit; no peer has matched his reach.
To its limit, and no peer to its stature that arrived.
ذوpossessing رُتبَةٍa rank أخَذَتْtook hold بالعِزِّof glory وارْتَفَعَتْand rose
ذو رُتبَةٍ أخَذَتْ بالعِزِّ وارْتَفَعَتْ
إلىto مَقامٍa station بعَزمِby the resolve of الفكرِthought لمnot يُطَلwas reached
إلى مَقامٍ بعَزمِ الفكرِ لم يُطَل
Possessed of a rank that took hold of glory and rose
Of a rank that took to honor and rose up
To a station beyond the reach of thought's resolve.
To a station with resolute thought not aimed for.
مُقَبِّلُkisser of الرَّاحَةِthe palm البَيْضاءِwhite فيamid زُمَرٍcompanies
مُقَبِّلُ الرَّاحَةِ البَيْضاءِ في زُمَرٍ
غُرٍّradiant ones بساحَةِin the courtyard of ذاكَthat المَشهَدِthe gathering الحَفِلِthronged
غُرٍّ بساحَةِ ذاكَ المَشهَدِ الحَفِلِ
Kisser of the white palm, amid companies
Kissing the blessed plain among throngs
Of radiant ones in the courtyard of that thronged gathering.
Of lovely ones by the Sanctuary Mosque frequented and crowded.
كمhow many حلَّhe untied منof عُقدَةٍa knot ليfor me بِتُّI spent the night أَرهَبُهاfearing it
كم حلَّ من عُقدَةٍ لي بِتُّ أَرهَبُها
بهمَّةٍwith a resolve لمnot تَزَلْhas ceased حَلاَّلَةَan untier of العُقَلِbonds
بهمَّةٍ لم تَزَلْ حَلاَّلَةَ العُقَلِ
How many a knot he untied for me that I had spent the night dreading,
How many knotty points that cowed me
With a resolve that has never ceased to untie bonds.
He undid with an unfailing determination of mind!
قمْrise! ياO أَخاbrother of الصِّدقِsincerity وانْزِلْand settle رُحبَthe expanse of دولَتِهِhis realm
قمْ يا أَخا الصِّدقِ وانْزِلْ رُحبَ دولَتِهِ
والْجأْand seek refuge لهin him خالِصاًsincerely وابْهَجْand rejoice وقُلْand speak وطُلِand excel
والْجأْ له خالِصاً وابْهَجْ وقُلْ وطُلِ
Rise, brother of sincerity, and settle in his realm's expanse;
Arise, O brother of sincerity, and descend into the expanse of his state!
And seek refuge in him sincerely; rejoice, speak, and excel.
Seek refuge in him sincerely, rejoice and say and request!
وخُذهُand take him سيفاًas a sword علىagainst الأَعداءِthe enemies تُصلِتُهُyou unsheathe it
وخُذهُ سيفاً على الأَعداءِ تُصلِتُهُ
مُهَنَّداًIndian-forged منfrom سُيوفِthe swords of المُصْطَفىthe Chosen One وَصُلِand charge
مُهَنَّداً من سُيوفِ المُصْطَفى وَصُلِ
And take him as a sword to unsheathe against the enemies,
And take him as a sword against enemies you charge
An Indian-forged blade from the Chosen One's swords; charge!
Drawn from the swords of Mustafa and kin.
واجْعلهُand make him باباًa gate لِماto what تَرجوهُyou hope for it منof أَمَلٍhope
واجْعلهُ باباً لِما تَرجوهُ من أَمَلٍ
وشافِعاًand an intercessor دافِعاًrepelling للمُدْهِشِagainst the terrifying الجَلِلِgrievous
وشافِعاً دافِعاً للمُدْهِشِ الجَلِلِ
And make him a gate to whatever hope you cherish,
And make him a gateway to what hope you aspire to
And an intercessor warding off what is terrifying and grave.
And an intercessor, driving away the Revered Majestic.
مولًىa master تحكَّمَgoverned فيover طَوْرِthe state of القُلُوبِhearts بماthrough what
مولًى تحكَّمَ في طَوْرِ القُلُوبِ بما
أَلقاهُhe cast it منof حِكَمٍwise sayings فيهاinto them ومنand of زَجَلِrhythmic verse
أَلقاهُ من حِكَمٍ فيها ومن زَجَلِ
A master who governed the state of hearts through what
A master who gained control in the state of hearts through
He cast into them of wisdom and rhythmic verse.
Wisdoms he cast into them and through subtle hints.
ردَّتْthey repelled هَوىthe desire of النَّفسِthe soul بالبُرْهانِwith proof إذْas قَطَعَتْthey cut off
ردَّتْ هَوى النَّفسِ بالبُرْهانِ إذْ قَطَعَتْ
ماwhat سَوَّلَmade alluring الخاسِرُthe loser الشَّيطانُSatan منof حِيَلِtricks
ما سَوَّلَ الخاسِرُ الشَّيطانُ من حِيَلِ
They repelled the soul's desire with proof, for they cut off
He turned the caprice of the ego with proof when he cut
The wiles the defeated Satan had made alluring.
Off what the accursed devil Satan suggested of plots.
حَبلٌa rope غَداbecame منamong حِبالِthe ropes of اللهِGod عُرْوَتُهُits handhold
حَبلٌ غَدا من حِبالِ اللهِ عُرْوَتُهُ
تَقِيprotects المُحِبَّthe lover منfrom الآثامِsins والخَلَلِand faults
تَقِي المُحِبَّ من الآثامِ والخَلَلِ
A rope that became one of God's ropes; its handhold
A rope tomorrow of God's ropes whose strength
Protects the lover from sins and faults.
Protects the lover from sins and flaws.
ووارِثُand an heir جامِعٌall-embracing طابَتْwere pure مَغارِسُهُhis roots; planting grounds
ووارِثُ جامِعٌ طابَتْ مَغارِسُهُ
وطابَand was pure مَسْراهُhis course فيin حطٍّhalting وفيand in نُقَلِmoving on
وطابَ مَسْراهُ في حطٍّ وفي نُقَلِ
And an all-embracing heir whose roots were pure,
An inheritor who gathered and fine are his plants,
And pure was his course, in halting and in moving on.
And fine is his drinking place whether settling or shifting abode.
يأويtakes refuge إليهin him الضَّعيفُthe weak القلبِof heart مُسْتنِداًrelying
يأوي إليه الضَّعيفُ القلبِ مُسْتنِداً
لهُon him فينْهَجُand so treads فيهِthrough him أَوضَحَthe clearest السُّبُلِpaths
لهُ فينْهَجُ فيهِ أَوضَحَ السُّبُلِ
The weak of heart takes refuge in him, relying
To him flees the weak of heart, leaning
On him, and through him treads the clearest paths.
Upon him, so he follows in him the clearest ways.
أَنعِمْhow excellent! بهhe is جَبَلاًa mountain منfrom آلِthe family of فاطمةٍFatimah
أَنعِمْ به جَبَلاً من آلِ فاطمةٍ
مُقدَّساًsanctified طُورُهُhis mount ناهيكَsufficient for you منof جَبَلِa mountain
مُقدَّساً طُورُهُ ناهيكَ من جَبَلِ
How excellent he is, a mountain of Fatimah's family,
Bestow him as a mountain from the House of Fatima
With his mount sanctified—what a mountain!
Sanctified, its mount Sinai unmatched by any mountain.
أَخَفَlighter منthan نَسَماتِthe breezes of الرِّيحِthe wind نجدَتَهُhis aid
أَخَفَ من نَسَماتِ الرِّيحِ نجدَتَهُ
وفيand in التَّمكُّنِfirmness فوقَabove الطَّوْدِthe mountain بالثِّقَلِin weight
وفي التَّمكُّنِ فوقَ الطَّوْدِ بالثِّقَلِ
Lighter than the wind's breezes is his aid,
His aid is lighter than the breeze of wind
And in firmness he outweighs the mountain.
And in capacity atop the towering height by heaviness.
نِظامُthe bond of بيتٍa household رَفيعٍlofty كلُّهُall of it عَمَلٌwork
نِظامُ بيتٍ رَفيعٍ كلُّهُ عَمَلٌ
بَرٌّrighteous تنزَّهَwas free إجْمالاًentirely عنfrom الكَسَلِsloth
بَرٌّ تنزَّهَ إجْمالاً عن الكَسَلِ
The bond of a lofty household, all of it work—
A system for an exalted House all of which is
Righteous and altogether free from sloth.
Righteous work free in general of laziness.
عليهupon him رِضوانُthe pleasure of رَبِّthe Lord of العَرْشِthe Throne ماas long as جمَعَتْgathered
عليه رِضوانُ رَبِّ العَرْشِ ما جمَعَتْ
آياتِهِHis verses منfrom سُوَرُchapters التَّفصيلِdetail والجُمَلِand summation
آياتِهِ من سُوَرُ التَّفصيلِ والجُمَلِ
Upon him be the pleasure of the Lord of the Throne, as long as
Upon it is the good pleasure of the Lord of the Throne
His verses are gathered in chapters of detail and summation.
However many verses He gathered in the chapters of detail and summation.
