منwhoever باتَspent the night مُلْتَحِفاًwrapped up فيin ذَيلِthe hem of مَنقَبَتيmy virtue
من باتَ مُلْتَحِفاً في ذَيلِ مَنقَبَتي
ماnot مَسَّهُtouched him فيin مَفَازاتِthe wastes of المَلاthe open land ضرَرُharm
ما مَسَّهُ في مَفَازاتِ المَلا ضرَرُ
Whoever spends the night wrapped in the hem of my virtue,
He who spent the night wrapped in the train of my robe
No harm touches him in the wastes of the open land.
No harm touched him in the desolate lands
ومنand whoever يكنْis خادِميmy servant فيin ظلِّthe shade of مرتَبَتيmy rank
ومن يكنْ خادِمي في ظلِّ مرتَبَتي
منfrom دونِهِbeneath him النَّيِّرانِthe two luminaries الشَّمسُthe sun والقَمَرُand the moon
من دونِهِ النَّيِّرانِ الشَّمسُ والقَمَرُ
And whoever is my servant beneath the shade of my rank,
And he who is my servant in the shade of my station
Beneath him are the two luminaries, the sun and the moon.
Without him are the sun and the moon on fire
أَناI ابنُthe son of قومٍa people أقامerected اللهGod منبَرَهُمْtheir pulpit
أَنا ابنُ قومٍ أقام الله منبَرَهُمْ
عَلَوْاthey rose علىabove النَّاسِthe people إنْif غابواthey were absent وإنْand if حَضَرواthey were present
عَلَوْا على النَّاسِ إنْ غابوا وإنْ حَضَروا
I am the son of a people whose pulpit God erected.
I am the son of a people whom God established their pulpit
They rose above mankind, whether absent or present.
They rose above people, whether absent or present
مطهَّرونَpurified نَقِيَّاتٌspotless ثيابُهُمْtheir garments
مطهَّرونَ نَقِيَّاتٌ ثيابُهُمْ
تجريflows الصَّلاةُblessing عليهِمْupon them أَينماwherever ذُكِرواthey are mentioned
تجري الصَّلاةُ عليهِمْ أَينما ذُكِروا
They are purified; their garments are spotless.
Purified, their clothes are immaculate
Blessings flow upon them wherever they are mentioned.
Prayers run upon them wherever they are mentioned
مَلائِكُthe angels of اللهGod فوقَabove الفوقِthe heights تعرِفُهُمْknow them
مَلائِكُ الله فوقَ الفوقِ تعرِفُهُمْ
وصامِتاتُand the silent things of الفَضاspace والبدوُand the nomads والحَضَرُand the townsfolk
وصامِتاتُ الفَضا والبدوُ والحَضَرُ
God's angels, above the very heights, know them,
The angels of God above the highest recognize them
And the silent things of space, and nomads and townsfolk.
And the silent horizons, deserts, and settlements
تُقيمُabide زُهْرُthe radiant stars of المَعاليglory أَينَماwherever سكَنواthey dwell
تُقيمُ زُهْرُ المَعالي أَينَما سكَنوا
وتُرْعَبُand are terrified الأُسْدُthe lions فيin الغاباتِthe forests إنْif خَطَرواthey stride by
وتُرْعَبُ الأُسْدُ في الغاباتِ إنْ خَطَروا
The radiant stars of glory abide wherever they dwell,
The blossoms of glory stand wherever they reside
And lions in the forests are terrified if they stride by.
And lions are frightened in the forests if they tread
كمhow many مرَّةٍa time فَتَكواthey struck lethally رَمشاًwith a blink بجاحِدِهِمْat their denier
كم مرَّةٍ فَتَكوا رَمشاً بجاحِدِهِمْ
فقُدَّand was severed منهfrom him بمعنىby the import of الرَّمشَةِthe blink العُمَرُthe lifespan
فقُدَّ منه بمعنى الرَّمشَةِ العُمَرُ
How often they struck down their denier with a blink,
How often they ripped an eyelash of their denier
And by that blink's import, his life was severed from him.
By the meaning of the eyelash, his life was lost
أُفيضَwas poured forth فيهِمْinto them جَليلُsublime الوَهبِbounty منfrom قِدَمٍantiquity
أُفيضَ فيهِمْ جَليلُ الوَهبِ من قِدَمٍ
جاءَتْcame بمضمونِهِwith its meaning الآياتُthe verses والسُّوَرُand the surahs
جاءَتْ بمضمونِهِ الآياتُ والسُّوَرُ
Sublime bounty was poured into them of old;
The Bountiful of the ancients poured into them from of old
The verses and surahs came bearing its meaning.
Its content came in verses and suras
أَخبارُهُمْreports of them وعُلاهُمْand their glory دونَbelow مَخْبَرِهِمْtheir inner reality
أَخبارُهُمْ وعُلاهُمْ دونَ مَخْبَرِهِمْ
وكمand how many وكمand how many مَخْبَرٍan inner reality منfrom دونِهِbeneath it الخَبَرُthe report
وكم وكم مَخْبَرٍ من دونِهِ الخَبَرُ
Reports of them and their glory fall short of their inner reality;
Their news and their highness are beyond their informer
And how many, how many an inner reality exceeds the report!
And how many an informer is there beyond the news
أَهلُpeople of القُلُوبِthe hearts إذاwhen نُدْعىwe are named وكمand how many زُمَرٍgroups
أَهلُ القُلُوبِ إذا نُدْعى وكم زُمَرٍ
فيamong النَّاسِpeople إذْwhen دُعِيَتْthey were named عُنْوانُهاtheir title الصُّوَرُoutward forms
في النَّاسِ إذْ دُعِيَتْ عُنْوانُها الصُّوَرُ
When named, we are people of the heart; and how many groups
The people of hearts when called and how many groups
Among mankind, when named, have outward forms for their title!
Among people when their facade is called, it is but an image
إلىto عليٍّAli نَمَتْناtraced our descent عُصبَةٌa clan طَهُرَتْwas pure
إلى عليٍّ نَمَتْنا عُصبَةٌ طَهُرَتْ
وكلُّand all آبائِناour forefathers فيin طِينِهِمْtheir clay طَهُرواwere pure
وكلُّ آبائِنا في طِينِهِمْ طَهُروا
A pure clan traced our descent to Ali,
To Ali we grew a purified faction
And all our forefathers were pure in their clay.
And all our forefathers in their clay were purified
جلَّتْwere exalted مَناقِبُناour virtues رَغماًas a humiliation لِجاحِدِناto our denier
جلَّتْ مَناقِبُنا رَغماً لِجاحِدِنا
ومنهُand from him منَّاof us بطَيِّwithin the folds of القلبِthe heart مُدَّكَرُa remembrance
ومنهُ منَّا بطَيِّ القلبِ مُدَّكَرُ
Exalted are our virtues, to our denier's chagrin;
Our virtues shone despite our denier
And a remembrance of us from him lies in the heart's folds.
And some of us, at the core of his heart, contemplated
فالْزَمْso keep to حِماناour sanctuary ولاand do not تنهَجْtake a path لرُحْبِtoward the expanse of سِوًىanother
فالْزَمْ حِمانا ولا تنهَجْ لرُحْبِ سِوًى
فنحنُfor we ساعَدَناaided us فيin شأْنِناour cause القَدَرُdestiny
فنحنُ ساعَدَنا في شأْنِنا القَدَرُ
So cleave to our sanctuary, and take no path to another's expanse,
So stick to our protection and do not roam freely
For destiny has aided us in our cause.
For our matter was aided by destiny
زيدٌZayd ببكرٍwith Bakr's aid يَروحُgoes الدَّهرُthroughout time منتَصِراًvictorious
زيدٌ ببكرٍ يَروحُ الدَّهرُ منتَصِراً
ونحنُand we باللهِthrough God جلَّexalted is اللهُGod ننتَصِرُwe gain victory
ونحنُ باللهِ جلَّ اللهُ ننتَصِرُ
Zayd goes ever victorious with Bakr's aid;
Zayd with Bakr time goes on victorious
And we, through God—exalted is God—gain victory.
And we, by God—God is most Great—are victorious
