    From the proof, there came to the secret that which

    Arose within the secret and revealed wisdom.

    And it told, from the wellspring of the outpouring, of

    What surged together in the waves of the sea of unveiling.

    It spread within the heart's recess, and in

    All of it ruled without a rival.

    فتَعالى اللهُ اللهُ رَمَى

    And it shot arrows of workings that took effect;

    Exalted is God—it was God who shot.

    The sanctuary's fire flashed—oh, my yearning

    For the sanctuary, since the sanctuary's fire flashed!

    I swear by the first gleam, which

    Is my aim, exalted as an oath.

    I am ravished by the manifestation of her beauty,

    When she appeared and alighted on the mountain.

    Whenever her manifestation shone into the hidden,

    It stirred the tormented heart, every time.

    The mountain's canopy in eastern al-Liwa

    Stirred my longing, and the universe vanished from me.

    And my communion with the Moses of my being,

    Once it dissolved, made the inscription clear to me.

    ووُجودي ذابَ الدَّمعُ همَى

    The Moses of resolve within me fell in a swoon;

    And my existence melted; tears streamed.

    And I fell apart, as though I had never been—

    No, nor had my bodily frame taken shape.

    Oh, the ordering of annihilation that engulfed me!

    So I seemed amid the ordered ranks of the cloud.

    So I folded the species away from my sight,

    And hid the earth and heaven from myself.

    What a meaning shone for me in my witnessing!

    Blood is forfeit in its vast land.

    كشفَتْ بالنُّورِ عنَّا الظُّلَمَا

    And by signs at the Sinai of guidance,

    Which dispelled darkness from us with light;

    مذْ رأَى برقَ الشُّهودِ اضْطَرَمَا

    And by an inward heart overflowing with light,

    That blazed when it saw the lightning of witnessing;

    The cloud rivaled freely flowing tears,

    Then folded away when the beloved smiled.

    And by a heaven in which the full moon glittered,

    Toward which resolve rose from the secret.

    So as resolve stretched toward it, above

    Its kind, it rose in ascent, and likewise.

    And when the brocade from the hills' gardens

    Had its edges spread out and became adorned,

    وبها الطَّيرُ انْبِساطاً رَنَّما

    And the embroideries of flowers were woven,

    And the birds sang among them in delight;

    فُرشتْ والحِزبُ سِرًّا نَمْنَمَا

    And carpets for the sanctuary's hall

    Were spread, and the company murmured in secret;

    And the camel-driver led the people's pale camels by night; they never

    Grew heavy in their tread without his rumbling chant.

    So there, look: you will see me racing ahead

    Toward my beloved, I make my feet fly.

    And all that has been claimed is an illusion.

    The people trod paths, by my life,

    And I took my place on the straightest path.

    The chosen Messenger proclaimed God's oneness,

    And we aligned ourselves with his guidance, just as

    فاعْتَقَدْنا كلُّ ما قدْ عَلَّمَا

    He taught us the secrets of guidance;

    So we believed all that he had taught.

    So through him we flew to the crown of the heights,

    And through what he taught, we became the learned.

    And we demolished the churches of otherness, and did not

    Ever adopt an idol in religion.

    Whenever God made it manifest to us,

    We did not conceal its affair.

    And that whose manifestation He veiled by decree,

    We never found to be anything but obscure.

    And if we speak of honoring a person,

    It is honoring what He has honored.

    And the bounds of sacred law—their command among us

    Is sovereign, known to whoever has been taught.

    Friend, take guidance from the Guide's law,

    And make it a ladder to the heights.

    And leave the worlds; pay them no heed,

    And worship God, and leave whoever does wrong.

    فظَلومٌ حادَ عنهُ في عَمَى

    And take the Qur'an as a clear light;

    For a grievous wrongdoer turns from it in blindness.

    فالَّذي فارَقَهُ قد فُصِمَا

    And join yourself to God through His Criterion;

    For whoever parts from it has been severed.

    عزَّ نَهْجُ المُصْطَفى مُعْتَصِمَا

    And make the Sunnah a protecting fortress;

    Mighty is the Chosen One's way as a refuge.

    So upon him God, throughout His worlds,

    Sends peace whenever He bestows blessings in any affair.
