زاحمتنا بوهمها أسماء

زاحمتنا بوهمها أسماء

والفخار الأفعال لا الأسماءُ

والفخار الأفعال لا الأسماءُ

Asmāʾ has vied with us through her delusion;

Her delusions have crowded us out, with names

and glory lies in deeds, not names.

While the essence of deeds not names

همُّها طيَّ وهمها في حضيضٍ

همُّها طيَّ وهمها في حضيضٍ

وسنا مجدنا ذراه السماءُ

وسنا مجدنا ذراه السماءُ

Her ambition, wrapped in her delusion, lies in the depths;

Her only concern is vanity, and her hopes lie in ruin

while our glory's radiance has the sky as its summit.

While our glory and youth the heavens have scattered

حجبت عن مجطالع العزِّ منا

حجبت عن مجطالع العزِّ منا

في سموات طولنا العمياءُ

في سموات طولنا العمياءُ

Veiled from the dawning heights of our honor,

She has veiled from us the rising glories

in the heavens of our stature, is the blind woman.

In the blind heavens that were our height

نحن آل البتول قد نظمتنا

نحن آل البتول قد نظمتنا

أولياءٌ في سمطها العلياءُ

أولياءٌ في سمطها العلياءُ

We are al-Batūl's kin; we have been strung

We, the Prophet's kin, have been brought together

as saints in exalted glory's necklace.

By the guardians among the most high

كلنا في مشارق الفخر زهرٌ

كلنا في مشارق الفخر زهرٌ

كيف لا وهي أمنا الزهراءُ

كيف لا وهي أمنا الزهراءُ

We are all blossoms in the dawning horizons of glory;

Each of us is, in the dawns of pride, a blossom

how could we not be, when al-Zahrāʾ is our mother?

How not, when she is our mother Az-Zahra

ما انجلى في قلائد النظم منا

ما انجلى في قلائد النظم منا

قدُّ ألا الأبدالُ والنجباءُ

قدُّ ألا الأبدالُ والنجباءُ

No figure among us has shone in necklaces of verse

Nothing gleamed in the necklaces of our poems

except the Abdāl and the Nujabāʾ.

Unless allowed by the substitutes and the elite

قل لأسماء والحديث شجونٌ

قل لأسماء والحديث شجونٌ

اقصري الجمح ويكِ يا أسماءُ

اقصري الجمح ويكِ يا أسماءُ

Say to Asmāʾ—and talk has many branches—

Say to Asma, though the talk is grieving

Curb your wild rush—woe to you, Asmāʾ!

Restrain, O Asma, your zeal

نحن بيت القدس المنيع وأهل ال

نحن بيت القدس المنيع وأهل ال

بيتِ والأصفياءُ والأوصياءُ

بيتِ والأصفياءُ والأوصياءُ

We are the impregnable House of Holiness, and the People of the

We are the invincible sacred house, the Prophet's kin

House, the elect, and the appointed successors;

And the loyal and the trustees

والشآبيبُ من بهم وعليهم

والشآبيبُ من بهم وعليهم

نزل الذكر قبلُ والإنباءُ

نزل الذكر قبلُ والإنباءُ

and the rain-showers—those through whom and upon whom

And the youth protected by them, upon whom

the Reminder and the tidings descended of old.

Revelation and prophecy descended before

يستقلُّ البحور منا رشاشٌ

يستقلُّ البحور منا رشاشٌ

ويسامي السماء منا لواءُ

ويسامي السماء منا لواءُ

A spray from us deems the seas small,

From us rise seas of profound eloquence

and a banner of ours vies in height with the sky.

And our banner ascends to the sky's ceiling

تحت ذاك الكساء قمنا بطيٍ

تحت ذاك الكساء قمنا بطيٍ

نشر السرِّ منه فينا الكساءُ

نشر السرِّ منه فينا الكساءُ

Beneath that cloak we stood enfolded;

Beneath that cloak we stood with devotion

the cloak spread its secret within us.

Spreading its secret among us is that cloak

ولنا في محافل الغيب خيلٌ

ولنا في محافل الغيب خيلٌ

هيئتها للجفلة الأنبياءُ

هيئتها للجفلة الأنبياءُ

And in the gatherings of the unseen we have horses,

And in the gatherings of the absent we have horses

which the prophets readied for the sudden rush.

Prepared for them are the mounts of prophets

كم رآنا الجهولُ أنا غلبنا

كم رآنا الجهولُ أنا غلبنا

وجرى عكس ما رآهُ القضاءُ

وجرى عكس ما رآهُ القضاءُ

How often the ignorant one thought us defeated,

How often the ignorant thought we were defeated

yet the decree ran contrary to what he imagined.

While fate's decree went against their views

نحن في الأرض آيةُ الله لم تن

نحن في الأرض آيةُ الله لم تن

سخ وقومٌ أمواتنا أحياءُ

سخ وقومٌ أمواتنا أحياءُ

We are God's sign on earth, never

We on earth are God's signs, unchanged

abrogated, and a people whose dead are alive.

While our enemies are dead though walking

قد هدى الأولياء نور هدانا

قد هدى الأولياء نور هدانا

وبنا حرا فكرها الأعداءُ

وبنا حرا فكرها الأعداءُ

The light of our guidance has guided the saints,

The saints were guided by our guiding light

and through us the enemies' thinking was confounded.

And through us were the minds of foes perplexed

ولنا في الرجال عزٌّ منيعٌ

ولنا في الرجال عزٌّ منيعٌ

شدَّت ركنه اليدُ البيضاءُ

شدَّت ركنه اليدُ البيضاءُ

And among men we have unassailable might;

Among men, ours is formidable pride

the white hand has strengthened its pillar.

Made firm by the white hand

ثابتٌ فخرنا على الفلك الأط

ثابتٌ فخرنا على الفلك الأط

لس فلتبد طورها الحرباءُ

لس فلتبد طورها الحرباءُ

Our glory stands firm upon the celestial sphere,

Sure is our pride in the highest sphere

the starless one; let the chameleon reveal its guise.

So let the war cloud rise and swell

نحن روح الأشياء منذ الطم

نحن روح الأشياء منذ الطم

سُ وقامت بربِّها الأشياءُ

سُ وقامت بربِّها الأشياءُ

We are the spirit of things, ever since

We are the spirit of all things since the beginning

the effacement; and things subsisted through their Lord.

And by their Lord all things arose

في محاريبنا الحرابُ التي يق

في محاريبنا الحرابُ التي يق

طرُ منها بالخارقات الدماءُ

طرُ منها بالخارقات الدماءُ

In our prayer niches are the spears from which

In our sanctuaries are weapons from which

blood drips through wondrous feats.

Blood pours exceptional and strange

نحنُ آل النبي ما زال للحش

نحنُ آل النبي ما زال للحش

رِ بأعتابِ بابنا الأولياءُ

رِ بأعتابِ بابنا الأولياءُ

We are the Prophet's kin; until the Gathering,

We are the Prophet's kin; ever at our door

the saints remain at the thresholds of our door.

Are saints hoping for the Guardian's care

هو هذا العطاءُ والله ممضٍ

هو هذا العطاءُ والله ممضٍ

رغم حسادِ وهبهِ ما يشاءُ

رغم حسادِ وهبهِ ما يشاءُ

This is the gift, and God brings to pass,

This is His giving while God fulfills

despite those who envy His giving, whatever He wills.

Despite enviers of His gifts
