مِنَن الرفاعي الرفيع الهمَّة
ثبتتwere established بكلin every قضيةٍproposition كليةuniversal
ثبتت بكل قضيةٍ كلية
The blessings of al-Rifa‘i, lofty in aspiration,
From Refa'i the noble, great in resolve
Were established in every universal proposition.
His principles firm in every absolute
بابgateway الرسولthe Messenger المصطفىthe Chosen One وحبيبهand his beloved
باب الرسول المصطفى وحبيبه
شيخshaykh الوجودexistence وفردand the peerless one كلevery مزيَّةexcellence
شيخ الوجود وفرد كل مزيَّة
The gateway to the chosen Messenger, and his beloved,
Door of the Chosen Prophet and his beloved
The shaykh of existence, peerless in every excellence.
Master of existence and sole of every merit
كنزtreasure الحقائقthe truths تاجcrown أقطابspiritual poles الأممthe nations
كنز الحقائق تاج أقطاب الأمم
خضعتsubmitted لهto him عربArabs المشيخthe shaykhs والعجمand non-Arabs
خضعت له عرب المشيخ والعجم
The treasure of truths, the crown of the spiritual poles of the nations.
Treasure of truths, crown of spiritual poles
Arab and non-Arab shaykhs bowed before him.
To him bowed the Arab sheikhs and non-Arabs
فيin دورةِthe cycle of الغجلالunclear; perhaps majesty مرقاهhis ascent انبهمbecame obscure
في دورةِ الغجلال مرقاه انبهم
وأولوand those possessing العلىeminence حارتwere bewildered بذيby this الدوريةcycle
وأولو العلى حارت بذي الدورية
In the cycle of [majesty?], his ascent became obscure.
In the cycle of manifestations his ascent dazzled
And those of high rank were bewildered by this cycle.
The spiritual elite confused by his uniqueness
غوثsuccor الرجالmen وحالهمand their spiritual state منfrom حالهhis spiritual state
غوث الرجال وحالهم من حاله
وقدand indeed استظلَّtook shelter كبارهمtheir great ones بظلالهin his shade
وقد استظلَّ كبارهم بظلاله
The succor of men; their spiritual state derives from his.
Succor of men, their state from his state
And their great ones have sheltered beneath his shade.
Under his shade the greatest sheltered
همthey يقتدونfollow the example تحققاًin true realization بكمالهof his perfection
هم يقتدون تحققاً بكماله
سيراًwalking علىaccording to أخلاقهhis character المرضيَّةwell-pleasing
سيراً على أخلاقه المرضيَّة
They follow his perfection in true realization,
Following truly his perfect traits
Walking in accordance with his well-pleasing character.
Walking his pleasing morals
أسدٌa lion حسينيُّHusayni مطمطمُconcealing سرَّهhis secret
أسدٌ حسينيُّ مطمطمُ سرَّه
غرقتwere drowned صدورthe hearts of الأولياءthe saints ببحرهin his sea
غرقت صدور الأولياء ببحره
A Husayni lion, concealing his secret.
Lion of Hussein roaring his secret
The saints' hearts were drowned in his sea.
In his ocean drowned saints' breasts
فالبحرfor the sea كانwas كنقطةٍlike a dot فيin برهhis bounty
فالبحر كان كنقطةٍ في بره
والبرُّand the land حبَّةُa seed of خردلٍmustard جزئيةٍtiny
والبرُّ حبَّةُ خردلٍ جزئيةٍ
For the sea was like a dot in his bounty,
So the ocean was as a drop in his land
And the land a tiny mustard seed.
And the land a mustard seed particle
مددٌaid بداappeared منfrom ربناour Lord لجنابهfor his noble person
مددٌ بدا من ربنا لجنابه
ذلَّتwere humbled سباعbeasts of prey الغابthe forest فيat أعتابهhis thresholds
ذلَّت سباع الغاب في أعتابه
Aid from our Lord appeared for his noble person.
Help came from our Lord to his side
The beasts of the forest were humbled at his thresholds.
Wild beasts of the forest humbled at his door
ماnot القطبthe spiritual pole إلاexcept خادمٌa servant فيat بابهhis gate
ما القطب إلا خادمٌ في بابه
جلَّتwere exalted مراتبهhis ranks عنabove القطبيَّةspiritual polehood
جلَّت مراتبه عن القطبيَّة
The spiritual pole is only a servant at his gate.
No pole but a servant in his doorway
His ranks are exalted above spiritual polehood.
Sublime his station beyond the poles
شمناwe glimpsed لشعرانيهمof their Sha‘rani بسماتهhis smiles
شمنا لشعرانيهم بسماته
نقلاًa transmitted account أتيcame يرويهhe relates it فيin طبقاتهhis Tabaqat
نقلاً أتي يرويه في طبقاته
We glimpsed their Sha‘rani's smiles,
We smelled his traits from their marks
In an account that came down, which he relates in his Tabaqat.
Transmitted legends tell in his chronicles
هوhe عنabout; probably 'if' intended أردتyou sought حقيقةًthe true nature لصفاتهof his attributes
هو عن أردت حقيقةً لصفاته
نزَّههexalt him ياO هذاyou عنabove الغوثيَّةthe rank of supreme succor
نزَّهه يا هذا عن الغوثيَّة
He—[if] you seek the true nature of his attributes—
Would you know truly his attributes?
Hold him, O you, above the rank of supreme succor.
Exalt him, O you, beyond sainthood
بحرٌa sea ببطنin the depths of الغيبthe unseen مجهولunknown الطرفthe shore
بحرٌ ببطن الغيب مجهول الطرف
وإمامand the imam of أهلthe people of النجدةsuccor القدسيةsacred
وإمام أهل النجدة القدسية
A sea in the depths of the unseen, its shore unknown.
A sea within the unknown, endless expanse
And the imam of the people of sacred succor.
And guide of the holy helpers' creed
قصرٌa palace منof الإرشادguidance مرفوعraised high الشرفthe battlements
قصرٌ من الإرشاد مرفوع الشرف
بصرٌa vision علىover ملكthe dominion of الحقيقةtruth قدindeed شرفhas risen high
بصرٌ على ملك الحقيقة قد شرف
A palace of guidance, its battlements raised high.
A palace of guidance, exalted and sublime
A vision exalted over the dominion of truth.
Sight upon the King of Truth honored and sublime
مولىa master جليلmajestic مهابةٍawe ساميlofty الشرفhonor
مولى جليل مهابةٍ سامي الشرف
بعصابةthrough the clan of الأبوينboth parents فيin النوعيَّةِkind
بعصابة الأبوين في النوعيَّةِ
An awe-inspiring master, lofty in honor,
Master revered, lofty and supreme
Through the clan of both parents, in kind.
With cloak of the two parents in essence
قدماًof old لهhis was قدمٌprecedence وعامand the year of الحجthe pilgrimage كفa hand
قدماً له قدمٌ وعام الحج كف
كمhow often ردَّhe repelled عنfrom راجيهone who hopes in him نائبةًa calamity وكفand held it back
كم ردَّ عن راجيه نائبةً وكف
He had precedence of old, and in the pilgrimage year, a hand.
His steps ahead, Hajj pilgrimaged and restrained
How often he repelled calamity from those who hoped in him, and held it back!
How oft from those who sought, hardship he relieved
غيثٌlife-giving rain بفيفاءon the open plain of البطائحal-Bata’ih قدindeed وكفhas poured
غيثٌ بفيفاء البطائح قد وكف
فكفىso he provided for الرجالthe men بسحَّةٍwith a downpour علويَّةheavenly
فكفى الرجال بسحَّةٍ علويَّة
A rain that has poured over the open plain of al-Bata’ih,
A rain in desolate lands that sufficed
So he provided for the men with a heavenly downpour.
So for men an Alawite mark suffices
وافيhe came بجذوةِwith an ember from زندهhis fire-stick فورىand so kindled الورىcreation
وافي بجذوةِ زنده فورى الورى
مذsince سرُّهhis secret فيin كلِّevery ذيpossessor of سرٍّa secret سرىflowed
مذ سرُّه في كلِّ ذي سرٍّ سرى
He came with an ember from his fire-stick, and kindled creation.
Fulfilling with embers of his zeal the world aflame
Since his secret flowed into every bearer of a secret.
Since his secret through each secret-keeper passed
غيثٌrain علىover الدنياthe world ومنand whoever فيهاis within it جرىflowed
غيثٌ على الدنيا ومن فيها جرى
بسرادقٍwithin a pavilion منfrom منبعthe source of الأزليَّةِbeginningless eternity
بسرادقٍ من منبع الأزليَّةِ
Rain that flowed over the world and all within it,
A rain upon the world and all who tread it
Within a pavilion from the source of beginningless eternity.
With canopy from eternal wellspring
فاجلعهso make him شيخكyour shaykh فيon الطريقthe path وتكتفيand you will have enough
فاجلعه شيخك في الطريق وتكتفي
وبظلِّهand in his shade عنfrom عينthe eye of باغٍan aggressor تختفيyou will hide
وبظلِّه عن عين باغٍ تختفي
So make him your shaykh upon the path, and you will have enough.
So take him as your sheikh upon the path and be satisfied
And in his shade you will hide from an aggressor's eye.
By his shade from spying eyes conceal
وبكأسهand with his cup منof كلevery داءٍailment تشتفيyou will be healed
وبكأسه من كل داءٍ تشتفي
وتعدُّand you will be counted بينamong القومthe company بالجمعيةwith spiritual collectedness
وتعدُّ بين القوم بالجمعية
And with his cup you will be healed of every ailment.
And by his cup every illness treat
And among the company you will be reckoned as spiritually collected.
Counted among the folk in the assembly
وبأحمدand in Ahmad الصيادِal-Sayyad قطبthe spiritual pole of الأولياthe saints
وبأحمد الصيادِ قطب الأوليا
لذوseek refuge and التمسseek منfrom فيضthe overflow of وابلهhis downpour الحياlife-giving rain
لذو التمس من فيض وابله الحيا
And in Ahmad al-Sayyad, the spiritual pole of the saints,
By Ahmad the fisher pole of saints
Take refuge, and seek life-giving rain from the abundance of his downpour.
Would you gain of his flooding rains life
فردٌa peerless one بتوليٌBatuli تبرقعveiled himself بالضياin radiance
فردٌ بتوليٌ تبرقع بالضيا
غوثٌa supreme helper اتيcame بخوارقٍwith wonders نبويَّةٍprophetic
غوثٌ اتي بخوارقٍ نبويَّةٍ
A peerless Batuli, veiled in radiance.
A unique individual clad in asceticism
A supreme helper who came with prophetic wonders.
A help bringing prophetic miracles
ماnot زارناvisited us منwhoever زارناvisited us إلاexcept غداwent forth
ما زارنا من زارنا إلا غدا
ولوحهand his tablet منfrom نورthe light of قابسناour flame-borrower هدىguidance
ولوحه من نور قابسنا هدى
No one who visited us went forth except
Whoever visited us became tomorrow
With his tablet bearing guidance from our flame-borrower's light.
His tablet a guidance-giving light we grasped
ولشأنناand for our station سرٌّa secret يرىwill be seen جهراًopenly غداtomorrow
ولشأننا سرٌّ يرى جهراً غدا
فيin موقفٍa place of standing ينجوis saved السليمthe pure-hearted بنيَّةِby intention
في موقفٍ ينجو السليم بنيَّةِ
And our station has a secret that will be plainly seen tomorrow,
For our affair a mystery plainly seen tomorrow
In a place of standing where the pure-hearted are saved by intention.
In a stand the sincere of intention saved
صلىmay bless الإلهGod علىupon الرسولِthe Messenger وسلَّماand grant peace
صلى الإله على الرسولِ وسلَّما
بحقائقِwith truths تغدوbecome لمثلىfor one like me سلَّماa ladder
بحقائقِ تغدو لمثلى سلَّما
May God bless the Messenger and grant him peace,
God bless the Messenger and greet
With truths that become a ladder for one like me,
By truths that for the best become a ladder
والآلِand the family والأصحابand the companions طرًّاall together كلَّماwhenever
والآلِ والأصحاب طرًّا كلَّما
فتحis spread البساطthe carpet لسادةٍfor masters صوفيَّةِSufi
فتح البساط لسادةٍ صوفيَّةِ
And upon all his family and companions, whenever
And his family and companions whenever called
The carpet is spread for Sufi masters.
The court opened for the masters spiritual
