أَياديكَyour favors عِنديto me لاnot يَغُبُّceases سِجامُهاtheir downpour
يَجودُpours generously إِذاwhen ضَنَّwithholds الغَمامُthe clouds غَمامُهاtheir cloud
Your favors to me—their downpour never ceases;
Your hands, their clasp I'll never lose,
Their cloud pours generously when the clouds withhold their rain.
Though heavy clouds should overflow.
وَكَمand how often أُؤثِرُI prefer التَخفيفَlightening the burden عَنكَfrom you فَلَمyet did not أَجِدI find
سِواكَanyone other than you لِأَيّامٍfor days قَليلٍfew كِرامُهاtheir generous men
And often I wish to lighten your burden, yet I have not found
To ease your burden I have tried,
Anyone but you in days whose generous men are few.
But none like you my pains allay
وَليand I have فَرَسٌa horse أَنتَyou العَليمُwell aware بِحالِهاof her condition
وَبِالرَغمِand against the will مِنّيof mine رَبطُهاher tethering وَمُقامُهاand her remaining
And I have a horse—you know her condition well;
I have a steed whose state you know,
And against my will she remains tethered.
Though oft constrained from food to stay.
وَلَمand not يُبقِhas left مِنهاof her الجُهدُhardship إِلّاexcept بَقِيَّةًa remnant
فَيَغدوso comes in the morning عَلَيهاupon her أَوor يَروحُcomes in the evening حِمامُهاher death
And hardship has left of her only a remnant,
No strength is left but lingering remains
So her doom comes upon her, morning or evening.
That morn and eve exhaust away.
شَكَتنيshe complained of me لِكُلِّto all الناسِpeople وَهيَthough she is بَهيمَةٌa beast
وَلَكِنand yet لَهاshe has حالٌa condition فَصيحٌeloquent كَلامُهاits speech
She has complained of me to everyone, though she is a beast;
Of me she has complained to all,
Yet her condition speaks eloquently.
Though speechless, eloquent her say.
إِذاwhen خَرَجَتshe goes out تَحتَbeneath الظَلامِthe darkness فَلاthen not تُرىshe is seen
مِنَbecause of الضَعفِweakness إِلّاexcept أَنthat يُصَكَّis struck لِجامُهاher bridle
When she goes out beneath the darkness, she cannot be seen,
By darkness covered, none can tell,
Because of her frailty—unless her bridle clinks.
Save by the clink, the alif1 splay.
وَلَيسَتand does not تَراهاsee her العَينُthe eye إِلّاexcept عَباءَةًa cloak
يُشَدُّis fastened عَلَيهاupon it سَرجُهاher saddle وَحِزامُهاand her girth
And the eye sees her as nothing but a cloak,
No eyes discern save habit's veil,
Upon which her saddle and girth are fastened.
The saddle, girth and crupper-stay.
لَهاshe has شَربَةٌa drink فيin كُلِّeach يَومٍday عَلىon الطَوىhunger
وَلوand if تَرَكَتهاshe gave it up صَحَّwould be valid مِنهاon her part صِيامُهاher fast
She has a drink each day on an empty stomach;
Daily a draft she needs must drink,
And if she gave it up, her fast would be valid.
Deny it, fasting she will stay.
وَعَهديand my recollection بِهاof her تَبكيshe weeps عَلىover التِبنِthe straw وَحدَهُit alone
فَكَيفَso how عَلىwith فَقدِthe loss of الشَعيرِbarley مُقامُهاher endurance
And I remember her weeping over straw alone;
And promises, were she denied,
So how can she endure the loss of barley?
The bean's haystack to weep away.2
