Your exemplary way is most exalted and noble,

and your excellent conduct is most virtuous and compassionate.

I know your generosity, forbearance, and piety,

yet, by my life, you surpass all I know.

    وَوَاللَهِ ما أَحتاجُ أَنِّيَ أَحلِفُ

    And by God, I am sincere in my devotion to you;

and by God, I have no need to swear.

I hold you too high to bring my complaint before you,

so here I am, advancing yet holding back.

I have a bounty from you that another sought to diminish,

but far be it that bounty from you should be called deficient.

All my life, my nature has been to reject indignity,

and one like you rejects and scorns it for one like me.

If you spare me this, I shall have an honored standing

through which I may take pride above others.

Were it not for matters unseemly to mention,

I would turn away from complaint and shun it.

For I know I have in you a source of support

that will sustain me for all time and come to my aid.

My hopes bring me tidings of a glance from you,

through which the world is led to me as a bride and adorned.

Nor is it beyond your favors to

renew a glory you once enjoyed, and double it.

    يُعَوِّضُهُ الإِحسانُ مِنكَ وَيُخلِفُ

    If you stand by me, wealth is the easiest loss to bear;

your kindness makes up for it and replaces it.

I seek nothing but to uphold my dignity,

and I grieve over nothing else.

    فَها هِيَ لا تَهفو وَلا تَتَلَهَّفُ

    My soul, praise be to God, is a high-minded soul;

so here it is, neither wavering nor pining.

The noblest thing you build is glory and eminence,

and your finest possessions are a sword and a Qur'an.

But there are little children and women,

and no one but me shows them tender care.

I grow jealous when the breeze blows upon them,

and my heart trembles for them with compassion.

My joy is that comfort should show upon them,

and my sorrow, that privation should show upon them.

    وَوَاللَهِ لا ضاعوا وَيوسُفُ يوسُفُ

    I have stored up for them God's kindness and Yusuf;

and by God, they will not be lost while Yusuf is Yusuf.

When I complain, I burden my poetry with hardship,

as though I were calling it to something unfamiliar.

And it had been devoted to all manner of love verse,

whose beauty enraptures and enthralls minds.

A luster shines upon it in love verse,

while in complaint an air of strain appears upon it.

My poetry has always held rest for the soul,

and solace for the heart, and a diversion from care.

In it the gazelle coos to you, the gazelle dark-eyed,

and in it the branch delights you, the branch slender-waisted.

Yes, I used to lament overwhelming passion and burning grief

over every lovely one who is unfair in love.

And in it I have either a lover who draws near, acting coy

toward me, or one who shuns me, acting haughtily.

I have complained, but complaint to you is no humiliation,

though I have always recoiled from it in pride.

    وَرَأيُكَ يا مَولايَ أَعلى وَأَشرَفُ

    To you, Salah al-Din, I have brought my story;

and your judgment, my lord, is loftier and nobler.
