نَهاكَrestrained you عَنِfrom الغَوايَةَwaywardness ماwhat نَهاكاrestrained you
وَذُقتَand you tasted مِنَof الصَبابَةِardent longing ماwhat كَفاكاsufficed you
You have had warning enough against waywardness,
They warned you against temptation - warnings enough -
And you have tasted enough of ardent longing.
And you tasted of reckless youth - your fill thereof;
وَطالَand grew long سُراكَyour night journey فيin لَيلِthe night of التَصابيyouthful dalliance
وَقَدand indeed أَصبَحتَyou reached morning لَمdid not تَحمَدyou praise سُراكاyour night journey
And long was your night journey through the night of youthful dalliance,
Long was your night-journey lost in passion's maze;
And you reached morning, finding no good in your night journey.
You rose ungrateful for the grace of yesterday.
فَلاso do not تَجزَعbe distraught لِحادِثَةِat the calamity of اللَياليthe nights
وَقُلand tell ليme إِنif جَزِعتَyou are distraught فَماthen what عَساكاcan you do
So do not be distraught at the calamity the nights have brought;
Grieve not o'er what befell one eve and morningtide,
And tell me, if you are distraught, what can you do?
But tell me, if you grieve, what can your grief provide?
وَكَيفَand how تَلومُyou blame حادِثَةًa calamity وَفيهاand in it
تَبَيَّنَbecame clear مَنwho أَحَبَّكَloved you أَوor قَلاكاhated you
And how can you blame a calamity through which
Why chide the turns of Fate, when in their orbit lies
It became clear who loved you or hated you?
The test that shows me who still loves me, who denies?
بِروحيwith my soul as ransom مَنthe one who تَذوبُmelts عَلَيهِfor him روحيmy soul
وَذُقand taste ياقَلبُO heart ماwhat صَنَعَتmade يَداكاyour two hands
My soul be ransom for him for whom my soul melts;
By my life, my soul is molten for his love
And taste, O heart, what your own hands have made.
Whose love has brought my own hands my destruction.
لَعَمريby my life كُنتَyou were عَنof هَذاthis غَنِيّاًwithout need
وَلَمand did not تَعرِفyou distinguish ضَلالَكَyour error مِنfrom هُداكاyour guidance
By my life, you had no need of this,
Indeed, you lived heedless of this till love taught you
And you did not distinguish your error from your guidance.
The difference 'twixt your aberration and guidance.
ضَنيتُI wasted away مِنَfrom الهَوىlove وَشَقيتُand I suffered مِنهُfrom it
وَأَنتَand you تُجيبُyou answer كُلَّevery هَوىًpassion دَعاكاcalled you
I wasted away from love and suffered from it,
I shunned love and it brought me only misery,
While you answer every passion that calls you.
While you chase every hue of love that beckons you.
فَدَعso leave ياقَلبُO heart ماقَدwhat indeed كُنتَyou were فيهِin it
أَلَستَare you not تَرىyou see حَبيبَكَyour beloved قَدalready جَفاكاshunned you
So leave, O heart, what you were caught up in;
Leave off, my heart, the ways of love you knew before,
Do you not see that your beloved has shunned you?
Can you not see that your beloved has forsaken you?
لَقَدindeed بَلَغَتreached بِهِbecause of him روحيmy soul التَراقيthe collarbones
وَقَدand indeed نَظَرَتbeheld بِهِbecause of him عَينيmy eye الهَلاكاdoom
Indeed, because of him, my soul has reached my collarbones,
My soul attained through him the vertigo of love-
And because of him my eye has looked upon doom.
Through him my eyes attained the dazzlement thereof.
فَياso O مَنyou who غابَvanished عَنّيfrom me وَهوَwhile he is روحيmy soul
وَكَيفَand how أُطيقُI can bear مِنfrom روحيmy soul اِنفِكاكاseparation
So, O you who have vanished from me, though you are my soul,
O you who vanished from me, though you are my soul,
And how can I bear separation from my soul?
How can I bear this severing from my soul?
حَبيبيmy beloved كَيفَhow حَتّىto the point that غِبتَyou vanished عَنّيfrom me
أَتَعلَمُdo you know أَنَّthat ليI have أَحَداًanyone سِواكاbesides you
My beloved, how did it come to this, that you vanished from me?
Beloved mine, how could you leave me after all?
Do you know of anyone I have besides you?
Do you not know that I have none but you?
أَراكَI see you هَجَرتَنيyou abandoned me هَجراًan abandonment طَويلاًlong
وَماand not عَوَّدتَنيyou accustomed me مِنfrom قَبلُbefore ذاكاthat
I see you have abandoned me for a long time,
I see you have deserted me for many a long day,
And you had never accustomed me to that before.
Though you never accustomed me to such before.
عَهِدتُكَI knew you لاتُطيقُyou cannot bear الصَبرَendurance عَنّيaway from me
وَتَعصيand you defy فيin وَداديloving me مَنwhoever نَهاكاforbade you
I knew you could not bear separation from me,
I knew you bore impatience from me ill,
And would defy anyone who forbade you to love me.
That you rebelled whene'er I said, "Adore!"
فَكَيفَso how تَغَيَّرَتchanged تِلكَthose السَجاياqualities
وَمَنand who هَذاthis one الَّذيwho عَنّيaway from me ثَناكاturned you
So how have those qualities changed?
How those traits have altered now, and who is this
And who is this who turned you away from me?
Has turned you from me to a different task?
فَلاso no وَاللَهِand by God ماحاوَلتَyou did not seek عُذراًan excuse
فَكُلُّfor all الناسِpeople يُعذَرُis excused ماexception marker خَلاكاexcluding you
No, by God, you have made no attempt at an excuse;
No, by God! You have no excuse that can avail,
For everyone can be excused except you.
For men may all be excused - all but you!
وَماand not فارَقتَنيyou parted from me طَوعاًwillingly وَلَكِنbut
دَهاكَbefell you مِنَfrom المَنِيَّةِdeath ماwhat دَهاكاbefell you
And you did not part from me willingly, but
You did not choose to part from me; no, but Fate's hand
Death dealt you the blow it dealt you.
Dealt you a blow that smote and laid you low.
لَقَدindeed حَكَمَتruled بِفُرقَتِناfor our separation اللَياليthe nights
وَلَمand not يَكُit was عَنby رِضايَmy consent وَلاnor رِضاكاyour consent
The nights have indeed decreed our parting,
Fate judged that we should part, no say had you or I;
And it was neither by my consent nor yours.
Had you but tarried till my state was such
فَلَيتَكَso if only you لَوif بَقيتَyou remained لِضُعفِfor the weakness of حاليmy state
وَكانَand had been الناسُthe people كُلُّهُمُall of them فِداكاransom for you
If only you had lived on, for the sake of my frail state,
That all mankind as one would ransom you!
And all the people had been your ransom.
Grievous it is to turn my eye, and miss
يَعِزُّit is painful عَلَيَّto me حينَwhen أُديرُI turn عَينيmy eye
أُفَتِّشُI search فيin مَكانِكَyour place لاnot أَراكاI see you
It pains me, when I turn my eye,
Your face in its accustomed place, and grope
To search your place and not see you.
To find your straight and slender form, your lip,
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see فيin سِواكَanyone besides you وَلاnor أَراهُI see it
شَمائِلَكَyour qualities المَليحَةَlovely أَوor حِلاكاyour charms
And I have not seen in anyone else, nor do I see,
Your dark eyes and your brilliance gone from you.
Your lovely qualities or your charms.
Though to your love I sealed my heart's interior,
خَتَمتُI sealed عَلىupon وِدادِكَlove for you فيin ضَميريmy inmost heart
وَلَيسَand does not يَزالُcease مَختوماًsealed هُناكاthere
I set a seal on my love for you within my heart,
Upon its tabled page your name is still unaltered.
And it remains sealed there.
Too soon Death's hand reached out to harvest you,
لَقَدindeed عَجِلَتhastened عَلَيكَupon you يَدُthe hand of المَناياfated deaths
وَماand not اِستَوفَيتَyou received in full حَظَّكَyour share مِنof صِباكاyour youth
Indeed, death's hand was too swift upon you,
Before you could enjoy the fruit of your own spring.
And you had not enjoyed your full share of youth.
Why should I sorrow if your body wastes,
فَلَوso if only أَسَفيmy sorrow لِجِسمِكَfor your body كَيفَhow يَبلىit decays
وَيَذهَبُand disappears بَعدَafter بَهجَتِهِits splendor سَناكاyour radiance
If only—ah, my sorrow for your body, how it decays!
If, after beauty's flourish, it is robbed of bloom?
And after its splendor your radiance disappears.
Deem me not true if I profess devotion,
وَماand what ليis for me أَدَّعيI claim أَنّيthat I am وَفِيٌّfaithful
وَلَستُwhile I am not مُشارِكاًsharing لَكَwith you فيin بَلاكاyour affliction
And why do I claim that I am faithful,
When I have no share in your adversity.
When I do not share your affliction with you?
You died; I did not die of grief for you, betraying
تَموتُyou die وَماand not أَموتُI die عَلَيكَfor you حُزناًfrom grief
وَحَقَّand by the sanctity of هَواكَlove for you خُنتُكَI betrayed you فيin هَواكاloving you
You die, and I do not die of grief for you;
My vow of love to you, however love called me.
By the sanctity of my love for you, I have betrayed you in that love.
How deep my shame, if they should say, "A lover!"
وَياand O خَجَليmy shame إِذاwhen قالواthey say مُحِبٌّa lover
وَلَمand did not أَنفَعكَI help you فيin خَطبٍa calamity أَتاكاbefell you
And oh, my shame, when they call me a lover,
When I brought no profit to you in your trouble.
Though I did not help you in the calamity that befell you.
With me I see how many for your loss weep long,
أَرىI see الباكينَthose weeping فيكَfor you مَعيwith me كَثيراًmany
وَلَيسَand is not كَمَنlike one who بَكىwept مَنone who قَدindeed تَباكىfeigned weeping
I see many weeping for you alongside me,
But none weeps as one weeps for their own weeping's sake.
And one who feigns weeping is not like one who weeps.
O you whose far and lonely journey now draws nigh,
فَياso O مَنyou who قَدalready نَوىintended سَفَراًa journey بَعيداًfar-off
مَتىwhen قُلtell ليme رُجوعُكَyour return مَنfrom نَواكاyour far-off absence
So, O you who have resolved on a distant journey,
Say, when will you come back to greet those who bid you stay?
When, tell me, will you return from so far away?
God give you from me all good that may befall,
جَزاكَmay He reward you اللَهُGod عَنّيon my behalf كُلَّevery خَيرٍgood thing
وَأَعلَمُand I know أَنَّهُthat He عَنّيon my behalf جَزاكاhas rewarded you
May God reward you with every good thing on my behalf,
And I know that from me He gave you only good thereby.
And I know that He has rewarded you on my behalf.
O tomb of him I love! Would I might bear,
فَياso O قَبرَgrave of الحَبيبِthe beloved وَدِدتُI wished أَنّيthat I
حَمَلتُI carried وَلَوand even if عَلىupon عَينيmy eye ثَراكاyour earth
So, O grave of my beloved, I wish that I
Were it but once, your soil upon my eyelids!
Had carried your earth, even upon my eye.
May showers water you unceasingly, but if not,
سَقاكَmay it water you الغَيثُthe rain هَتّاناًpouring steadily وَإِلّاand if not
فَحَسبُكَthen enough for you مِنof دُموعيmy tears ماwhat سَقاكاwatered you
May the rain water you in steady showers; otherwise,
My streaming tears have watered you no end.
The tears of mine that water you will suffice.
Still does my salutation hover, with the breeze,
وَلاand may not زالَcease السَلامُthe greeting of peace عَلَيكَupon you مِنّيfrom me
يَرُفُflutters مَعَwith النَسيمِthe breeze عَلىover ذُراكاyour heights
And may my greeting of peace to you always
About the particles that were your mortal dress.
Flutter with the breeze over your heights.
