Would that I knew, would that I knew,

which land will be my grave.

My life has been lost in exile

    and unceasing travel.

And when will the day of my death be?

    If only I knew.

    In none of the lands

I have visited do I have a resting place.

After this, if only I knew

what the end of my life will be.

And when shall I escape what

I am in? Would that I knew!

And indeed, it is time I sobered

up—so why has my drunkenness lasted so long?

Do you think what has passed can be recovered—

what I have squandered of my life?
