مَرحَباًwelcome بِالزائِرِto the visitor الواthe arriving one (word beginning)
مَرحَباً بِالزائِرِ الوا
صِلِarriving (word completion) وَالبَرِّand the kind one الشَفيقِthe compassionate one
صِلِ وَالبَرِّ الشَفيقِ
Welcome to the visitor who has arrived,
Welcome to the virtuous visitor
and to the kind, compassionate one,
And the kind-hearted well-wisher
وَصَديقٍand a friend ليto me صَدوقٍtrue and loyal
وَصَديقٍ لي صَدوقٍ
وَرَفيقٍand a companion بيtoward me رَفيقِgentle
وَرَفيقٍ بي رَفيقِ
and to a loyal friend of mine,
And my loyal, true friend
and to a companion gentle toward me.
And my gentle, kind companion
بِأَبيwith my father as ransom أَنتَyou لَقَدindeed فَرَّyou relieved (word beginning)
بِأَبي أَنتَ لَقَد فَرَّ
جتَyou relieved (word completion) عَنّيfrom me كُلَّevery ضيقِdistress
جتَ عَنّي كُلَّ ضيقِ
May my father be your ransom! You have indeed relieved
By my father you are, you have eased
me of every distress.
All my troubles and pains
وَتَفَضَّلتَand you were gracious وَأَحسَنand you acted kindly (word beginning)
وَتَفَضَّلتَ وَأَحسَن
تَyou (verb ending) إِلىto الصَبِّthe ardent lover المَشوقِthe yearning one
تَ إِلى الصَبِّ المَشوقِ
And you have been gracious and kind
And you were so gracious and did
to the yearning lover.
Good to this passionate youth
لَيتَif only خَدّيmy cheek كانَwere أَرضاًground
لَيتَ خَدّي كانَ أَرضاً
لَكَfor you فيalong طولِthe length الطَريقِthe road
لَكَ في طولِ الطَريقِ
If only my cheek were the ground
I wish my cheek was the ground
for you along the length of the road.
For you along the whole way
تُربُthe dust أَقدامِكَof your feet عِنديto me
تُربُ أَقدامِكَ عِندي
هُوَit كَالمِسكِlike musk الفَتيقِunsealed, releasing fragrance
هُوَ كَالمِسكِ الفَتيقِ
The dust of your feet, to me,
For your feet to tread on me
is like musk with its fragrance released.
It would be like sweetest musk
كُنتُI was مِنfrom فَرطِthe intensity اِشتياقيmy longing
كُنتُ مِن فَرطِ اِشتياقي
بِكَfor you فيin نارِthe fire الحَريقِthe blaze
بِكَ في نارِ الحَريقِ
I was, from my overwhelming longing
Out of intense longing for you
for you, in a blazing fire.
I was in the fire of burning
مُقلَتيmy eye مُذsince غِبتَyou went away ماnot جَفdried (word beginning)
مُقلَتي مُذ غِبتَ ما جَف
فَتdried (word completion) وَلَكِنbut جَفَّdried ريقيmy saliva
فَت وَلَكِن جَفَّ ريقي
My eye has not dried since you went away,
Since you left, my eyes never dried
but my saliva has dried up.
Though my tears have run dry
بِيَwithin me مِنof سُكرِthe intoxication الهَوىlove ماthat which
بِيَ مِن سُكرِ الهَوى ما
لَستُI am not عَنهُfrom it بِمُفيقِrecovering sobriety
لَستُ عَنهُ بِمُفيقِ
There is a drunkenness of love within me
The intoxication of passion leaves
from which I do not sober.
Me in a daze I cannot awake from
لاnot أَرىI deem قَلبيmy heart بِماwith what أَصhas become (word beginning)
لا أَرى قَلبي بِما أَص
بَحَhas become (word completion) فيهِin it بِمُطيقِable to endure
بَحَ فيهِ بِمُطيقِ
I do not think my heart, in the state
My heart is not strong enough
it has come to be in, can hold out.
To bear what it has become
