كانَwas فيin التيهِarrogance مُسرِفاexcessive
The beardless youth has grown a beard—he who
The everlasting one who wandered astray
was excessive in his arrogance.
Once reckless in the wilderness
حَسَناًhandsome كانَwas وَجهُهُhis face
وَسَريعاًand swiftly تَصَحَّفاbecame distorted
His face was handsome,
Handsome was his face
and swiftly became distorted.
And nimble his gait
سَرَّdelighted وَاللَهِby God ناظِريmy eye
ماwhat أَرىI see فيهِin him وَاِشتَفىand found satisfaction
By God, my eye was delighted
By God, it gladdened my sight
by what I see in him, and found satisfaction.
Though imperfect he remained
شَكَرَmay … reward اللَهُGod لِحيَةًa beard
صَيَّرَتturned وَجهَهُhis face قَفاa nape
May God reward the beard
Thank God for the beard
that turned his face into a nape.
That covered his chin
