سَلامٌpeace عَلىupon عَهدِthe days of الشَبيبَةِyouth وَالصِباand boyhood
وَأَهلاًand welcome وَسَهلاًand be at ease بِالمَشيبِto gray hair وَمَرحَباand welcome
Peace be upon the days of youth and boyhood,
And a warm and hearty welcome to gray hair.
وَياand O راحِلاًone departing عَنّيfrom me رَحَلتَyou departed مُكَرَّماًhonored
وَياand O نازِلاًone arriving عِنديwith me نَزَلتَyou arrived مُقَرَّباwelcomed close
And O you leaving me, you departed with honor;
And O you lodging with me, you arrived as a cherished guest.
أَأَحبابَناO our beloved ones إِنَّindeed المَشيبَgray hair لَشارِعٌsurely a lawgiver
لَيَنسَخَto repeal أَحكامَthe laws of الصَبابَةِardent longing وَالصِباand youth
O our beloved ones, gray hair is indeed a lawgiver,
Intent on repealing the laws of longing and youth.
وَفِيَّand within me مَعَwith الشَيبِgray hair المُلِمِّthat has arrived بَقِيَّةٌa remnant
تُجَدِّدُrenews عِنديwithin me هِزَّةًa thrill وَتَطَرُّباand rapture
Yet within me, despite the gray hair that has come, a remnant remains,
That renews in me a thrill and rapture.
أَحِنُّI yearn إِلَيكُمfor you كُلَّماwhenever لاحَgleams بارِقٌa lightning flash
وَأَسأَلُand I ask عَنكُمabout you كُلَّماwhenever هَبَّتِblows الصَباthe east wind
I yearn for you whenever lightning gleams,
And ask after you whenever the east wind blows.
وَماand not زالَceased وَجهيmy face أَبيَضاًwhite فيin هَواكُمُlove for you
إِلىuntil أَنthat سَرىspread ذاكَthat البَياضُwhiteness فَشَيَّباso turned me gray-haired
And my face remained white in my love for you,
Until that whiteness spread and turned me gray-haired.
وَلَيسَand is not مَشيباًgray hair ماwhat تَرونَyou see بِعارِضيon my cheek
فَلاso do not تَمنَعونيforbid me أَنto أَهيمَbe mad with love وَأَطرَباand be enraptured
And what you see on my cheek is not gray hair,
So do not forbid me to be mad with love and enraptured.
فَماfor not هُوَit إِلّاexcept نورُlight ثَغرٍa mouth لَثَمتُهُI kissed it
تَعَلَّقَclung فيin أَطرافِthe tips of شَعريmy hair فَأَلهَباso set it ablaze
For it is only the light of a mouth I kissed,
Which clung to the tips of my hair and set them ablaze.
وَأَعجَبَنيand pleased me التَجنيسُwordplay بَينيbetween me وَبَينَهُand between it
فَلَمّاso when تَبَدّىit appeared أَشنَباًwhite-toothed رُحتُI became أَشيَباgray-haired
And the wordplay between me and it pleased me:
So when it appeared white-toothed, I became gray-haired.
وَهَيفاءَand a slender-waisted woman بَيضاءُwhite of التَرائِبِthe upper chest أَبصَرَتshe saw
مَشيبيmy gray hair فَأَبدَتso she showed رَوعَةًalarm وَتَعَجُّباand astonishment
And a slender-waisted woman, fair of breast, saw
My gray hair, and showed alarm and astonishment.
جَنَتshe brought about لِيَfor me هَذاthis الشَيبَgray hair ثُمَّthen تَجَنَّبَتshe kept away
فَواحَرَباso, alas! مِمَّنfrom one who جَنىdid harm وَتَجَنَّباand kept away
She brought me this gray hair, then shunned me;
Ah, my anguish at one who harmed me and shunned me!
تَناسَبَmatched خَدّيmy cheek فيin البَياضِwhiteness وَخَدُّهاand her cheek
وَلَوand if دامَit had remained مُسوَدّاًblack لَقَدsurely كانَit would have been أَنسَباmore fitting
My cheek and hers matched in whiteness,
Yet had mine stayed black, it would surely have been more fitting.
وَإِنّيand indeed I وَإِنand even if هَزَّshook الغَرامُpassion مَعاطِفيmy sides
لَآبىsurely I refuse الدَناياbase deeds نَخوَةًout of pride وَتَعَرُّباand Arab honor
And I, even if passion shakes my frame,
Surely refuse base deeds, out of pride and Arab honor.
أَتيهُI bear myself proudly عَلىabove كُلِّall الأَنامِmankind نَزاهَةًout of integrity
وَأَشمَخُand I hold my head high إِلّاexcept لِلصَديقِtoward a friend تَأَدُّباout of courtesy
I bear myself proudly above all mankind, in my integrity,
And hold my head high, save before a friend, out of courtesy.
وَإِنand if قُلتُمُyou say أَهوىI love الرَبابَal-Rabab وَزَينَباًand Zaynab
صَدَقتُمyou spoke truly سَلواask عَنّيabout me الرَبابَal-Rabab وَزَينَباand Zaynab
And if you say I love al-Rabab and Zaynab,
You speak truly—ask al-Rabab and Zaynab about me.
وَلَكِنand yet فَتىًa young man قَدindeed نالَattained فَضلَexcellence in بَلاغَةٍeloquence
تَلَعَّبَhe played فيهاin it بِالكَلامِwith words تَلَعُّباplayfully
But I am a young man who has attained distinction in eloquence,
And has used it to play freely with words.
