يَومُنا يَومٌ مَطيرُ

وَلَنا كَأسٌ تَدورُ

وَلَنا كَأسٌ تَدورُ

Our day is a rainy day,

Our day is a rainy day

and we have a cup going round.

And we have a cup that goes around

وَمُقامٌ تَحسَبُ الأَر

وَمُقامٌ تَحسَبُ الأَر

ضَ بِنا فيهِ تَسيرُ

ضَ بِنا فيهِ تَسيرُ

And a place where you think the earth

And a place where the earth thinks

moves with us within it.

We travel upon it

أَخَذَت مِنّا عُقارٌ

أَخَذَت مِنّا عُقارٌ

أَخَذَت مِنها الدُهورُ

أَخَذَت مِنها الدُهورُ

A wine has taken its toll on us;

A potion has taken from us

the ages have taken their toll on it.

And the ages have taken from it

لَطُفَت بِالدَنِّ حَتّى

لَطُفَت بِالدَنِّ حَتّى

قيلَ سِرٌّ وَضَميرُ

قيلَ سِرٌّ وَضَميرُ

It grew subtle in the wine-jar, until

It was gentle with the base until

it was called a secret and an inward thought.

It was said a secret and a conscience

فَنِيَت إِلّا يَسيراً

فَنِيَت إِلّا يَسيراً

كُلُّها ذاكَ اليَسيرُ

كُلُّها ذاكَ اليَسيرُ

It dwindled away, save for a little;

So it faded except a little

all of it is that little.

All of it was that little

فَهِيَ في الكاساتِ نارٌ

فَهِيَ في الكاساتِ نارٌ

وَهِيَ في الأَحشاءِ نورُ

وَهِيَ في الأَحشاءِ نورُ

So in the cups it is fire,

So it is fire in the cups

and in the body's depths it is light.

And it is light in the intestines

وَكَأَنَّ الكَأَس حَقٌّ

وَكَأَنَّ الكَأَس حَقٌّ

وَكَأَنَّ الراحَ زورُ

وَكَأَنَّ الراحَ زورُ

And it is as though the cup were truth,

And it is as if the cup is true

and as though the wine were falsehood.

And it is as if the comfort is false

وَمِنَ الرَيحانِ وَالأَز

وَمِنَ الرَيحانِ وَالأَز

هارِ غَضٌّ وَنَضيرُ

هارِ غَضٌّ وَنَضيرُ

And basil and flowers,

And from the basil and flowers

tender and fresh.

Is green and blossoming

وَنَدامى بِهِمُ العَي

وَنَدامى بِهِمُ العَي

شُ كَما قيلَ قَصيرُ

شُ كَما قيلَ قَصيرُ

And drinking companions, with whom life

And our companions in it are life

is short, as they say.

As it is said, short

وَسُقاةٌ مِثلَ ما نَه

وَسُقاةٌ مِثلَ ما نَه

وى شُموسٌ وَبُدورُ

وى شُموسٌ وَبُدورُ

And cupbearers such as we long

And cupbearers like what we desire

for—suns and full moons.

Suns and full moons

وَمُغَنٍّ هُوَ فيما

وَمُغَنٍّ هُوَ فيما

يَحسَبُ الناسُ أَميرُ

يَحسَبُ الناسُ أَميرُ

And a singer who is, in

And a singer who in what

people's estimation, a prince.

People think is a prince

ما لَهُ فيما يُغَنّي

ما لَهُ فيما يُغَنّي

هِ مِنَ الظُرفِ نَظيرُ

هِ مِنَ الظُرفِ نَظيرُ

In what he sings, he has

Has no peer in what he sings

no equal in charm.

And when he sings the earth

وَإِذا غَنّى تَموجُ ال

وَإِذا غَنّى تَموجُ ال

أَرضُ مِنهُ وَتَمورُ

أَرضُ مِنهُ وَتَمورُ

And when he sings, the earth surges

Billows from him and rages

because of him, and sways.

And he if you wish is wealthy

وَهُوَ إِن شِئتَ غَنِيٌّ

وَهُوَ إِن شِئتَ غَنِيٌّ

وَهُوَ إِن شِئتَ فَقيرُ

وَهُوَ إِن شِئتَ فَقيرُ

And he is, if you wish, rich,

And he if you wish is poor

and he is, if you wish, poor.

And the people disappear in the sitting

وَيَغيبُ القَومُ في المَج

وَيَغيبُ القَومُ في المَج

لِسِ وَالقَومُ حُضورُ

لِسِ وَالقَومُ حُضورُ

And the company vanish in the gathering,

And the people are present

while the company are present.

And we have a cook who is neat

وَلَنا طاهٍ نَظيفٌ

وَلَنا طاهٍ نَظيفٌ

وَظَريفٌ وَخَبيرُ

وَظَريفٌ وَخَبيرُ

And we have a clean cook,

And gentle and expert

charming and skilled.

And pots that bubbled so

وَقُدورٌ هَدَرَت فَه

وَقُدورٌ هَدَرَت فَه

يَ عَلى الجَمرِ تَفورُ

يَ عَلى الجَمرِ تَفورُ

And pots have roared, so they

They overflow on the embers

seethe on the embers.

A sitting - if you visit us in it

مَجلِسٌ إِن زُرتَنا في

مَجلِسٌ إِن زُرتَنا في

هِ فَقَد تَمَّ السُرورُ

هِ فَقَد تَمَّ السُرورُ

A gathering—if you visit us in

Then happiness is complete

it, joy is complete.

All you seek in it

كُلُ ما تَطلُبُهُ في

كُلُ ما تَطلُبُهُ في

هِ مَليحٌ وَكَثيرُ

هِ مَليحٌ وَكَثيرُ

All that you seek in

Is beautiful and plentiful

it is lovely and plentiful.
