ياO مَنyou whom كَلِفتُI became enamored بِهِwith him عِشقاًin passionate love وَلَمand did not أَرَهُI see him
وَالعِشقُand love لِلقَلبِfor the heart لَيسَis not العِشقُlove لِلبَصَرfor sight
O you whom I love passionately, though I have not seen you.
O you whom I fell in love with though I've never seen you,
And love is for the heart; love is not for the eye.
For love is for the heart, not just for the eyes.
سَمِعتُI heard أَوصافَكَyour qualities الحُسنىthe finest فَهِمتُso I was enraptured بِهاby them
فَكَيفَhow, then إِنif نِلتُI attained ماwhat أَرجوI hope for مِنَof النَظَرseeing
I heard of your finest qualities, so I was enraptured by them.
I've heard descriptions of your beauty and so understood,
How, then, would I feel if I attained the sight I long for?
But how will it be if I gain what I hope from seeing you.
إِنّيindeed I لَآمُلُI surely hope أَنَّthat اللَهَGod يَجمَعُناbrings us together
وَإِنَّand indeed فيin الخُبرِfirsthand knowledge ماthat which يُغنيdispenses عَنِwith الخَبَرreported information
I truly hope that God will bring us together.
Truly I hope that God will bring us together,
And indeed, firsthand knowledge makes reports unnecessary.
For sometimes news cannot substitute for seeing.
