    O slender branch of silver,

    O you with lovely eyes!

Whatever pleases you is, to me,

upon my head and my eye.

My heart gets nothing from you, O full moon,

    but Ḥunayn's two slippers.

And the envious think that I

have both hands filled by you.

O lovely one, because of whom I am

    caught between estrangement and separation!

Whether he appears or turns away,

    ah, what two enchantments!

For, from the front and from behind,

he is lovely in both aspects.

He is a full moon; shining forth

is his light in the two easts.

And a book, with beauty inscribed

    in it upon two pages.

Where is someone to earn a reward

by mediating between the one I love and me?

He left angry, and has not spoken

    to me for two nights.
