أَمُحَمَّدٌO Muhammad وَالجودُand generosity فيكَin you سَجِيَّةٌan innate trait
يَهنيكَmay it gladden you طَيِّبُgood ذِكرِهاits renown يَهنيكاmay it gladden you
O Muhammad, generosity is an innate trait in you;
O Muhammad, generosity is your nature,
may its good renown gladden you—may it gladden you.
Its good mention brings you joy,
أَدعوكَI call upon you دِعوَةَthe appeal of مَنone who تَيَقَّنَbecame certain أَنَّهُthat he
سَيَنالُhe will attain مايَرجوهُwhat he hopes for إِذwhen يَدعوكاhe calls upon you
I call upon you as one who is certain that he
I call upon you, the call of one certain,
will attain what he hopes for when he calls upon you.
That he will attain what he hopes, when he calls upon you,
عَوَّدتَنيyou accustomed me البِرَّkindness الجَزيلَabundant وَلَمand not تَزَلyou have ceased
أَبَداًalways تُعَوِّدُهُyou accustom one to it الَّذيthe one who يَرجوكاhopes in you
You have accustomed me to abundant kindness, and still
You have accustomed me to abundant kindness,
you always accustom whoever hopes in you to it.
And you never cease to accustom one who hopes in you,
فَلِذاكَso for that reason لَوif فَتَّشتَyou searched قَلبيmy heart لَمwould not تَجِدyou find
لَكَwith you فيin الوَلاءِloyalty المَحضِunalloyed فيهِwithin it شَريكاa partner
That is why, were you to search my heart, you would not find
Therefore if you examined my heart, you would not find,
anyone sharing your place in its unalloyed loyalty.
For you in sincere loyalty, a partner,
هَذاthis حَديثيmy speech عَنfrom ضَميرٍa conscience صادِقٍsincere
وَاِسأَلand ask ضَميرَكَyour conscience إِنَّهُindeed it يُنبيكاtells you
These are my words, from a sincere conscience;
This is my talk, from a truthful conscience,
and ask your conscience—it will tell you.
And ask your conscience, it will inform you,
لِمwhy لايُرَجّىis not hoped for مِنكَfrom you إِدراكُattainment of المُنىwishes
وَأَبوكَand your father فيon يَومِthe day of الفَخارِglory أَبوكاyour father
Why should the fulfillment of wishes not be hoped for from you,
Why is it not hoped from you, attainment of wishes?
when your father, on the day of glory, is who he is?
And your father, on the day of pride, is your father,
وَإِذاand when تَحَدَّثَspeaks عَنof نَداكَyour generosity مُحَدِّثٌa speaker
فَالبَحرُthen the sea عَبدُكَyour slave لاnot أَقولُI say أَخوكاyour brother
And when someone speaks of your generosity,
And if a speaker talks of your benevolence,
the sea is your slave—I do not call it your brother.
The sea is your servant, I do not say, your brother,
جاءَتit came مُحَرِّكَةًstirring لِهِمَّتِكَfor your resolve الَّتيwhich
I did not think it مُحتاجَةًin need of تَحريكاstirring
It has come to stir your resolve, which
It came stimulating your resolve,
I did not think needed stirring.
Which I have never known to be in need of stimulating,
فَلَئِنso if indeed مَنَنتَyou bestowed a favor بِماwith what وَعَدتَyou promised تَكَرُّماًout of generosity
فَلِمِثلِthen for the like of ذَلِكَthat لَمnot أَزَلI have ceased أَرجوكاI hope in you
So if you graciously grant what you promised,
So if you bestow what you have promised, generous,
then it is for such favors that I have always placed my hope in you.
For the like of that, I have not ceased to hope in you,
وَلَئِنand if indeed نَسيتَyou forgot وَماand not إِخالُكَI think you ناسِياًforgetful
فَسِواكَthen someone other than you مَنis the one who يَنسىforgets لَهُbelonging to him مَملوكاa slave
And if you forget—though I do not think you forgetful—
And if you forget, and how could you forget intentionally,
then it is someone other than you who forgets a slave of his.
Other than you, who forgets one he owns?
