ياO أَعَزَّdearest الناسِthe people عِنديto me
يا أَعَزَّ الناسِ عِندي
كَيفَhow خُنتَyou betrayed اليَومَtoday عَهديmy covenant
كَيفَ خُنتَ اليَومَ عَهدي
O dearest of all people to me,
O most beloved of people to me
How could you break faith with me today?
How could you break your promise today?
سَوفَshall أَشكوI complain لَكَto you بُعديmy separation
سَوفَ أَشكو لَكَ بُعدي
فَعَسىso perhaps شَكوايَmy complaint تُجديwill avail
فَعَسى شَكوايَ تُجدي
I shall complain to you of my separation,
I will complain of our distance
so perhaps my complaint will avail.
Perhaps my lament will help in some way
أَينَwhere مَولايَmy master يَرانيhe sees me
أَينَ مَولايَ يَراني
وَدُموعيand my tears فَوقَupon خَدّيmy cheek
وَدُموعي فَوقَ خَدّي
Where is my master, to see me
Where is my friend who sees me
with my tears upon my cheek?
With tears atop my cheek?
أَقطَعُI pass اللَيلَthe night أُقاسيI endure
أَقطَعُ اللَيلَ أُقاسي
ماwhat أُقاسيI endure فيهِin it وَحديalone
ما أُقاسي فيهِ وَحدي
I pass the night enduring
I endure the nights in agony
what I endure in it alone.
In loneliness, how I ache and seek
لَيتَنيif only I عِندَكَwith you ياO مَوbeginning of 'master'
لَيتَني عِندَكَ يا مَو
لايَending of 'my master' أَوor لَيتَكَif only you عِنديwith me
لايَ أَو لَيتَكَ عِندي
If only I were with you, O my mas-
Would that I was with you, my friend
ter—or if only you were with me!
Or would that you were here with me
إِرضَbe pleased عَنّيwith me لَيسَnot إِلّاexcept
إِرضَ عَنّي لَيسَ إِلّا
ذاكَthat مَطلوبيmy wish وَقَصديand my aim
ذاكَ مَطلوبي وَقَصدي
Be pleased with me; nothing but
Please be pleased, I ask no more
that is my wish and aim.
That is all I want, take heed of my plea
أَينَwhere مَنone who يُلفىis found لَهُfor him فيamong النthe (beginning of 'the people')
أَينَ مَن يُلفى لَهُ في الن
ناسِpeople (completing the split word) وُدٌّlove مِثلَlike وُدّيmy love
ناسِ وُدٌّ مِثلَ وُدّي
Where is one for whom, among the
Where is one who is loved by all
people, love like mine can be found?
With a fondness equal to mine?
أَناI أَفسَدتُكَhave spoiled you عَنaway from كُلِّevery
أَنا أَفسَدتُكَ عَن كُلِّ
مُحِبٍّlover لَكَof you بَعديafter me
مُحِبٍّ لَكَ بَعدي
I have spoiled you for every
I have kept you from all who care
lover of yours after me.
After me, none compare, you're divine
وَلَقَدand indeed أَصبَحتُI have become عَبداًa slave
وَلَقَد أَصبَحتُ عَبداً
لَكَto you لَكِنbut أَيُّwhat a عَبدِslave
لَكَ لَكِن أَيُّ عَبدِ
And indeed I have become a slave
Though I'm your servant, what good am I?
to you—but what a slave!
In you my life, if you're not nigh
تَلَفيmy ruin فيكَin you حَياتيmy life
تَلَفي فيكَ حَياتي
وَضَلاليand my straying فيكَin you رُشديmy guidance
وَضَلالي فيكَ رُشدي
My ruin in you is my life,
Please forgive me, my only wish
and my straying in you is my guidance.
Is to regain your kindness, I cry
