أَمُؤنِسَO comforter قَلبيmy heart كَيفَhow أَوحَشتَyou made lonely ناظِريmy eye
وَجامِعَand gatherer شَمليmy scattered affairs كَيفَhow أَخلَيتَyou emptied مَجلِسيmy gathering-place
O comfort of my heart, how have you left my eye forlorn?
O comforter of my heart, how you have made my eyes deserted,
And gatherer of my scattered life, how have you emptied my gathering-place?
And uniter of my clan, how you have emptied my dwelling.
وَياand O ساكِناًdwelling in قَلبيmy heart وَماand not فيهِin it غَيرُهُanyone but him
فَدَيتُكَmay I be your ransom ماnot اِستَوحَشتُI felt lonely مِنهُin it لِمُؤنِسِfor a companion
And O dweller in my heart, where no other dwells,
O dweller of my heart, none but you,
May I be your ransom! I have never felt lonely there for lack of a companion.
I'd sacrifice myself for you from that which has made me lonely without a companion.

تَصَدَّقgive alms عَلىto صَبٍّa lovesick lover مِنَof الصَبرِpatience مُفلِسِbankrupt
And by God, O richest of humankind in beauty,
By God, O most needless of creatures from worries,
Give alms to a lovesick lover bankrupt of patience.
Bestow upon a youth patience, destitute.

By the private intimacy between us, never disclosed,
By what is between us of seclusion, unprofessed,
And by the sacred bond between us, never defiled,
And what is between us of sanctity, unstained.
أَنِلنيgrant me الرِضاfavor حَتّىso that أُغيظَI may vex بِهِwith it العِدىthe foes
وَتَذهَبَand may depart عَنّيfrom me خيفَتيmy fear وَتَوَجُّسيand my apprehension
Grant me your favor, so that with it I may vex my foes,
Grant me contentment, so I may spite the enemies,
And my fear and apprehension may leave me.
And my fear and anxiety may leave me.

Your favor—if I gain it, I gain high rank,
Your contentment, which if I attain, I'd attain glory,
And it clothes me among people in the noblest attire.
And you'd dress me in people's most honorable attire.

يَغارُenvies الحَياthe rain مِنof مَدمَعيmy tears المُتَبَجِّسِgushing
May God watch over those neighbors: whenever their memory comes to mind,
May God herd neighbors, when their mention passes by,
The rain envies my gushing tears.
My tearful eyes envy.
وَياand oh حَبَّذاhow lovely الدارُthe house الَّتيwhere كُنتُI was مُدَّةًfor a time
أَميلُI am drawn إِلىto ظَبيٍa gazelle بِهاwithin it مُتَأَنِّسِtame
And oh, how lovely the house where, for a time,
O beloved house that I inclined toward for some time,
I was drawn to a tame gazelle within it.
Befriending a gazelle in it.

Whenever we visited it, we found its breeze
Whenever we visit it, we find its breeze
Wafting there like ambergris exhaling fragrance.
Fragrantly exhaling like breathing ambergris.
وَنَمشيand we walk حُفاةًbarefoot فيupon ثَراهاits soil تَأَدُّباًout of reverence
نَرىwe believe أَنَّناthat we نَمشيwe walk بِوادٍin a valley مُقَدَّسِsacred
And we walk barefoot upon its soil, out of reverence,
And we walk barefoot on its turf humbly,
Believing that we walk in a sacred valley.
Seeing that we walk in a sacred valley.
