ياغادِرينَO betrayers أَلَمdid ... not يَكُنbe
ياغادِرينَ أَلَم يَكُن
بَينيbetween me وَبَينَكُمand between you عُهودُpledges
بَيني وَبَينَكُم عُهودُ
O betrayers, were there not
O you who left, was there not
pledges between me and you?
A pact between us that stood?
ظَهَرَتcame to light وَبانَتand became clear ليto me قَضِيَّcase (continued)
ظَهَرَت وَبانَت لي قَضِيَّ
تُكُمyour (completes 'your case') فَماso what هَذاthis الجُحودُdenial
تُكُم فَما هَذا الجُحودُ
Your case has come to light and become clear to me—
Your betrayal became clear,
so what is this denial?
So what is this denial?
وَحَلَفتُمُand you swore ماnot خُنتُمُyou betrayed
وَحَلَفتُمُ ما خُنتُمُ
وَعَلىand concerning خِيانَتِكُمyour betrayal شُهودُwitnesses
وَعَلى خِيانَتِكُم شُهودُ
And you swore that you had not betrayed,
You swore you were never disloyal,
yet there are witnesses to your betrayal.
Yet your treachery has witnesses.
يامَنO you who تَبَدَّلَchanged فيin الهَوىlove
يامَن تَبَدَّلَ في الهَوى
يَهنيكَmay he bring you joy صاحِبُكَyour companion الجَديدُnew
يَهنيكَ صاحِبُكَ الجَديدُ
O you who have changed in love,
O you whose love has changed,
may your new companion bring you joy.
May your new companion bless you.
إِنif كانَwas أَعجَبَكَpleased you الصدوturning away (continued)
إِن كانَ أَعجَبَكَ الصدو
دُending of 'turning away' كَذاكَlikewise أَعجَبَنيpleased me الصُدودُturning away
دُ كَذاكَ أَعجَبَني الصُدودُ
If turning away pleased you,
If you were pleased with turning away,
likewise, turning away pleased me.
Likewise, I was pleased with the estrangement.
وَاِعلَمand know بِأَنّيthat I لاnot أُريI desire (continued)
وَاِعلَم بِأَنّي لا أُري
دُending of 'I desire' إِذاwhen رَأَيتُكَI see you لاتُريدُyou do not desire
دُ إِذا رَأَيتُكَ لاتُريدُ
And know that I do not desire you
Know that I do not want
when I see that you do not desire me.
To see you if you do not want to see me.
وَأَناand I القَريبُnear فَإِنbut if تَغَيَّchanges (continued)
وَأَنا القَريبُ فَإِن تَغَيَّ
رَending of 'changes' صاحِبيmy companion فَأَناthen I البَعيدُfar away
رَ صاحِبي فَأَنا البَعيدُ
And I am near; but if there is a change
I was close, so if you change
in my companion, then I am far away.
My companion, then I will be far.
يَومٌa day أُخَلِّصُI free فيهِin it قَلheart (continued)
يَومٌ أُخَلِّصُ فيهِ قَل
بيmy (completes 'my heart') مِنكَfrom you ذاكَthat اليَومُthe day عيدُa festival
بي مِنكَ ذاكَ اليَومُ عيدُ
A day on which I free my heart
A day will come when
from you—that day is a festival.
I free my heart of you - that day is a celebration.
وَعَساكَand perhaps you تَطلُبُyou ask أَنthat أَعوI return (continued)
وَعَساكَ تَطلُبُ أَن أَعو
دَending of 'I return' إِلىto هَواكَyour love فَماbut not أَعودُI return
دَ إِلى هَواكَ فَما أَعودُ
And perhaps you will ask me to return
And perhaps you will want me to return
to your love, but I will not return.
To loving you, but I will not return.
وَلَقَدand indeed عَلِمتَyou have known بِأَنَّنيthat I
وَلَقَد عَلِمتَ بِأَنَّني
ليI have فيin الهَوىlove خُلُقٌa disposition شَديدُunyielding
لي في الهَوى خُلُقٌ شَديدُ
And you know full well that I
You knew well that my character
have an unyielding nature in love.
In love is firm.
