ياO غائِباًabsent one وَجَميلُهُand his kindness
ماnot غابَwas absent فيin بُعدٍdistance وَقُربِand nearness
O absent one, whose kindness
O absent one, though far, still dear art thou
has not been absent, far or near.
To me, though lost in distance near or far
أَشكوI complain of لَكَto you الشَوقَthe longing الَّذيthat
لاقَيتَهُyou experienced it وَالذَنبُand the fault ذَنبيmy fault
I complain to you of the longing that
For thee still longs this heart that constant glows
you have endured—and the fault is mine.
And for thy sake bears many an inward scar
فَعَسىso perhaps بِفَضلٍthrough kindness مِنكَfrom you أَنthat
تَرعىyou will watch over رَفيقَكَyour companion وَهوَand he is قَلبيmy heart
So perhaps, through your kindness,
Perchance thy grace may pity thy poor friend
you will watch over your companion, who is my heart.
And comfort give to my sad heart forlorn
وَاِسأَلهُand ask him عَنabout أَخبارِهِhis news
وَاِستَغنِand have no need عَنof مَضمونِthe contents of كُتُبيmy letters
And ask him how he fares,
Ask of my state and what my letters send
and dispense with the contents of my letters.
But read them not, their tale is only mourn
