بِروحِيَwith my soul مَنthe one who قَدindeed زارَنيvisited me وَهوَwhile he خائِفٌafraid
كَماjust as اِهتَزَّtrembled غُصنٌa branch فيin الأَراكَةِthe arak tree مائِدُswaying
My soul would ransom him who visited me in fear,
By my soul, he who visited me while he was afraid
As a swaying branch trembles on the arak tree.
As a bough quivered on a shaking palm tree,
وَماand not زارَhe visited إِلّاexcept طارِقاًa night visitor بَعدَafter هَجعَةٍa spell of sleep
وَقَدand already نامَhad slept واشٍa tale-bearer يَتَّقيهِhe guards against him وَحاسِدُand an envier
He came only as a night visitor, after a spell of sleep,
And did not visit except furtively after sleeping,
With a tale-bearer he feared and an envier already asleep.
While a slanderer slept, fearing and envying him.
فَلَمso, not أَرَI saw بَدراًa full moon قَبلَهُbefore him باتَspent the night خائِفاًafraid
فَهَلso, did...? كانَhe was يَخشىfearing أَنthat تَغارَgrow jealous الفَراقِدُthe Farqad stars
For never before him had I seen a full moon spend the night afraid.
Never did the full moon before him spend the night afraid.
Was he then afraid the Farqad stars would grow jealous?
Could it be he feared lest the others were jealous?
وَكُنتُand I was أَظُنُّthinking الحُسنَbeauty قَدhad خَصَّsingled out وَجهَهُhis face
وَماand not هُوَit إِلّاexcept قائِمٌstanding فيهِin him قاعِدُsitting
And I had thought beauty had singled out his face,
I used to think beauty had singled out his face,
Yet it is ever in him, standing and sitting.
Yet it was but established in it while it stayed.
فَدَيتُI would ransom حَبيباًa beloved زارَنيvisited me مُتَفَضِّلاًgraciously
وَليسَand there is no عَلىbeyond ذاكَthat التَفَضُّلِgracious favor زائِدُanything greater
I would give my life for a beloved who graciously visited me,
My love visited me generously and was not
And no favor could be greater than that.
Bound by obligation to such generosity.
وَماand not كَثُرَتwere numerous مِنّيfrom me إِلَيهِto him رَسائِلٌletters
وَلاand not مَطَلَتdelayed fulfillment بِالوَصلِof union مِنهُfrom him مَواعِدُpromises
And I had not sent him many letters,
My messages to him were not many,
Nor had his promises of union kept me waiting.
Nor had we fixed many a tryst.
رَآنيhe saw me عَليلاًill فيin هَواهُlove for him فَعادَنيso he visited me
حَبيبٌa beloved لَهُhe has بِالمَكرُماتُin noble deeds عَوائِدُhabits
He saw me sick with love for him, so he visited me—
When love for him made me ill he visited me -
A beloved for whom noble deeds are customary.
A lover whose nature is ever to show kindness.
فَمُتso die كَمَداًof grief ياO حاسِديmy envier فَأَناfor I am الَّذيthe one who
لَهُhe has صِلَةٌfavor مِمَّنfrom the one whom يُحِبُّhe loves وَعائِدُand a visitor to the sick
So die of grief, you who envy me, for I am the one
Die choked, my envier, for I am he
Who has his beloved's favor and a visitor when ill.
Who has ties with one who loves and regularly visits.
وَليand I have واحِدٌone beloved ماnot ليI have مِنَamong الناسِpeople غَيرُهُother than him
أَرىI see أَنَّهُthat he is الدُنياthe world وَإِنand even if قُلتُI say واحِدُone
And I have one beloved, no one else among all people;
I have but one, none other than he,
I see him as the whole world, though I call him one.
Though I say he is my world, he is but one.
فَياso, O مُؤنِسيmy comforting companion لاmay not فَرَّقَseparate اللَهُGod بَينَناbetween us
وَلاand may not أَقفَرَتbecome deserted لِلأُنسُfor companionship مِنّاof us مَعاهِدُfamiliar haunts
O you who bring me comfort, may God never part us,
My companion, may God not separate us
Nor may the haunts of companionship ever lie empty of us.
Or leave our friendship without abode.
وَيازائِراًand O visitor قَدindeed زارَvisited مِنfrom غَيرِother than مَوعِدٍan appointment
وَحَقِّكَby your honor إِنّيindeed I am شاكِرٌgrateful لَكَto you حامِدُfull of praise
And O visitor who came without an appointment,
O visitor who visited without prior arrangement,
By your honor, I am grateful to you and full of praise.
Indeed, I thank and praise you for your right.
